Democrats’ rebellion against President Biden intensified on Wednesday with the party’s congressional leaders lobbying successfully to delay his nomination by a week, prolonging the debate over the viability of his candidacy. The maneuver came as Representative Adam B. Schiff of California became the highest-profile Democratic lawmaker to call on Mr. Biden to end his run. More details have emerged of heated conversations the president has held with lawmakers in which he has angrily pushed back on their entreaties for him to drop out of the race. Mr. Biden’s disastrous debate performance last month, his uneven public appearances and his struggles in the polls have fueled deep worries within his party. Congressional Democrats have also warned that Mr. Biden’s sagging political standing will make it far harder for them to win critical House and Senate races in November.

Democrats have been planning for weeks to conclude Biden’s nomination process before August 7 – well before the Chicago convention next month. But even as those entreaties are being made daily behind the scenes, plans are being made to solidify his standing with the help of party rules in the Democratic convention process. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison pushed back on any suggestion that attempts might be underway within the DNC to accelerate the virtual roll call. “Fourteen million people voted for me to be the nominee in the Democratic Party. “That’s the democratic process,” Biden said of the ability of delegates to change their mind, before adding confidently: “It’s not going to happen.”This story has been updated with additional reporting.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

But they need to grasp a critical point: Joe Biden is not yet the nominee of the Democratic Party. The nominee is chosen at the national convention (this year, it’s in Chicago in mid-August). As the party’s charter explains, “The national convention shall be the highest authority of the Democratic Party.” Under party rules, a nominee must win an absolute majority of delegates on a given presidential ballot at the convention. Now, with democracy in the balance, the convention can return to its old role of actually choosing the nominee. But it must decide alongside Mr. Biden.

A brutal 24 hoursPresident Biden and his allies may have thought they had stemmed a rebellion by fellow Democrats and donors after his debate debacle. Some Democratic lawmakers made clear that they weren’t falling into line behind Biden. She said she would back whatever decision he takes, but the equivocal comments were seen as offering other Democrats space to speak up. Hours later, Peter Welch of Vermont became the first Democratic senator to call on Biden to withdraw. “We can’t unsee what we saw” at the debate, Welch told The Times, adding that Donald Trump’s returning to power would be a “catastrophe.”

CNN —A staggering 24 hours that cracked the political foundation of Joe Biden’s reelection bid leave him facing the most high-pressure presidential news conference in modern history on Thursday. The stakes for Biden’s solo appearance at the conclusion of the NATO summit multiplied by the hour as his political position unraveled at a dignity-sapping rate. In another danger sign for Biden’s candidacy, one Democratic strategist told CNN, “Everything is frozen because no one knows what’s going to happen. The deepening crisis gripping the Democratic Party is not simply damaging Biden’s chances of clinging to the nomination. But as Biden’s political standing continues to rapidly deteriorate, the question is becoming how much longer he can insist he’s the only Democrat who can beat Trump.

The attacks also illustrated "the diverse range of militant actors Russia has angered through its domestic and foreign policy actions," he added. Dads really are doing more careIt may not always feel like fathers are doing more parenting, but they are. One cross-national study found that dads spent an average of 16 minutes a day caring for their kids in 1965. Also, dads find parenting “extremely important to their identity,” and enjoyable and rewarding nearly identically as often moms do.

As the seat of power, Zhongnanhai is often thought of as China’s equivalent to the White House, or the Kremlin. Architectural changesThere have been serious revisions to the architecture of Zhongnanhai since the end of imperial rule in 1912. Having re-established Zhongnanhai as a center of political power in the new China, Mao set about rebuilding the compound according to his tastes. “It was here,” noted Aldrich, “with the background trappings of a scholar, that he met Nixon and Kissinger in 1972.”Most subsequent leaders have preferred to keep a house outside the Zhongnanhai compound.
