I was a bit puzzled when I watched, because I happened to know that Rabi wasn’t a resident at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. But the film was historically accurate: Rabi did visit Los Alamos on occasion, and was present for the Trinity bomb test. Why wasn’t Rabi at Los Alamos? But the truth is that he was involved in another secret project applying cutting-edge science to the war effort, M.I.T.’s Radiation Laboratory, which basically worked on advanced radar. All of this was made possible not just by America’s economic might but also by its cultural and social openness.

On a Thursday evening in late June, Clarissa Champlain learned that her 15-year-old son Brodee had been in a terrible crash, the latest teen victim of an e-bike accident. The e-bike, a model made by Rad Power, had a top speed of 20 miles per hour, but his route took him on a busy road with a 55-mile-per-hour limit. Ms. Champlain rushed to the hospital and was taken to Brodee’s room. “I went to grab his head and kiss him,” she recalled. In the days following, the town of Encinitas, where both incidents occurred, declared a state of emergency for e-bike safety.

Warren’s survey of chain and independent pharmacies across all 50 states, carried out between June 9 and 28, found a third of drug stores charged $164 or more to uninsured patients for Lilly’s Insulin Lispro. Lilly said at the time it would drop the price of its Lispro insulin injection, a generic version of its own branded Humalog, to $25 a vial. The senator’s office found chain stores charged uninsured customers an average of $123 per vial for the generic insulin, compared to $63 at independent pharmacies. “This is a deeply troubling finding, revealing that the pharmacies offering the most affordable Insulin Lispro were the least likely to have it in stock,” the report said. Around 8.4 million of the 37 million people in the United States with diabetes use insulin, according to the American Diabetes Association.

June 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stock indexes rebounded on Tuesday from a recent losing streak as upbeat economic data soothed investor worries about an imminent recession triggered by the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes. While the economic data was encouraging, Rhys Williams, chief strategist at Spouting Rock Asset Management, said the market also rose on seasonal factors. "You'd a bad week in the stock market last week and a bad day on Monday. June 27 (Reuters) - Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA.O) on Tuesday warned that lower spending by inflation-spooked consumers and a hit from a larger-than-expected drop in COVID product sales would likely persist into next year, sending its shares plunging nearly 9%. Walgreens' shares were at $28.87 in early trading, hitting an over 11-year low after the company slashed its profit forecast for the year. The pharmacy chain also said its newly launched healthcare business, through which it operates doctors' offices, missed Walgreens' target for sales growth. "There are some factors impacting us today that are likely to extend into next year, namely the macroeconomic-driven consumer pressure and COVID headwinds." In the third quarter of the fiscal year, Walgreens reported a 0.2% fall in same-store sales at its retail division, compared with estimates of a 2.1% rise.

The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. And while electric cars get all the hype, a game-changing solution to getting around without warming the planet has flourished right under our noses. Electric cars are important, too, but they're expensive and far off for a lot of drivers, MacArthur said. The most popular electric vehicles in the US don't have a Tesla logoWhile electric cars get all the attention, e-bikes have for years been the best-selling electric vehicles in the US. Last year, Americans bought just over 800,000 electric cars, according to Kelley Blue Book, a record. Since e-bikes are much cheaper than electric cars, "you can get them into the hands of consumers faster," she said.
Private equity-owned companies make up nearly three-quarters of Moody's list. In addition to higher interest payments, Moody's noted, many of the downgraded companies have fewer funding paths to staying afloat. Sixteen of the 30 companies that fell off Moody's at-risk list last quarter did so through defaults, not improved financial outlooks. As defaults rise, distressed debt exchanges will be the route of choice for many companies and their private equity owners, Moody's noted. Of the other companies that fell off Moody's list last quarter, seven opted instead to file for bankruptcy.
"We are discussing ways to offer them legal support," one of the sources said of manufacturers and retail pharmacies. Major U.S. manufacturers of abortion pills include GenBioPro Inc and Danco Laboratories. Walgreens said in March it would not dispense abortion pills in the 20 states where it risked breaking the law. Discussions between the Biden administration and pill manufacturers and pharmacies over the issue have been ongoing for months, sources said, but Friday's decision brings fresh urgency. It is unclear whether the administration is considering following in California Governor Gavin Newsom's footsteps by withholding federal contracts from chains that suspend abortion pill sales.

[1/2] A sign for Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) headquarters is seen in Santa Clara, California, U.S. March 10, 2023. The bank's sudden shutdown sent a chill through Silicon Valley amid an otherwise gloomy period marked by tech layoffs and a pullback in spending as consumers tightened their wallets. Company executives, many of whom stashed all of their funds in Silicon Valley Bank, took to Twitter and other social media networks to beg for relief. A joint statement Sunday by U.S. government bodies including the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve indicated taxpayers would not bear any cost associated with the new plans around Silicon Valley Bank. Silicon Valley Bank until now had been a reliable source of funding for startups relative to other banks.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is among tech execs giving money to startups after Silicon Valley Bank's collapse. Altman told Reuters startups need money to pay employees and bills while SVB's situation is addressed. SVB, a once-trusted bank for tech and startups, was taken over by regulators Friday. "Sam has been sending stuck startups money today with no docs, just saying 'send me back whatever you can whenever you can'. "Even if SVB can't find a buyer or a loan over the weekend, a lot of the money startups have on deposit will be made available to them," Altman told Reuters.
Friday's dramatic failure of the bank, which focuses on tech startups, was the biggest since the 2008 financial crisis. Even small startups are getting in on the action to help others. Aleem Mawani, founder of Streak, a company with about 30 employees, tweeted Friday he would lend his personal cash free of any terms to other small startups worried about paying staff. Some, including Lowercarbon Capital, have offered loans to portfolio companies that have funds stuck at SVB. Gurson estimated "conservatively" that Altman has given more than $1 million to support other startups in similar need.
Brex CEO Henrique Dubugras is fundraising more than $1 billion in loans for startups affected by the SVB collapse. "We are trying to raise as much capital as we can," a Brex spokesperson told Insider. "As of yesterday, we've received $1.5 billion in requests from nearly 1,000 companies," a spokesperson for Brex told Insider. "The reason we're doing it is obviously we want to support a community, that's very important," Dubugras told TechCrunch. "[T]here are verification processes in place to ensure there is no fraud," a spokesperson told Insider.

The challenge: Attempt a surf, skate, and snowboard "trifecta" in the middle of a busy work dayOver the past few years, remote work has become a routine part of our lives. This is the case for the sales teams at Volcom, a global lifestyle apparel brand based in Costa Mesa, California. Two Volcom sales executives, Brent Lantz and David Jurusik (or BL and Nook, respectively), embrace this — whether it's taking a call on a ski slope or discussing inventory with retailers on the road. Dell Technologies and Intel teamed up with Volcom to see if they could improve and optimize their on-the-go sales efforts and work connectivity. The challenge: Attempt a southern California "trifecta" — surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding within a 12-hour period — all while completing a full day of work.

The real estate company reported a 57 cent per share loss on $480 million of revenue.
Morning Bid: Growth trumps rates

While there were some questions about seasonal adjustments in the data, economists were impressed that sales growth was pretty broad based and have scrambled to re-crunch first quarter U.S. output forecasts as a result. There may be a more mixed picture from Thursday's data slate on producer prices, housing starts and weekly jobless claims. Even though rates futures and Treasury yields ticked back a bit today, pricing now has Fed policy rates moving as high as 5.25% and staying above 5% all year. And while full-year earnings growth estimates for S&P500 companies have sunk to zero, consensus forecasts are now pencilling in a rebound of almost 12% next year. Uncertainty about the pace of growth and annual tax receipts in April makes it difficult for government officials to predict the exact "X-date", it said.
With a majority of S & P 500 companies having posted their quarterly results, investors' focus will turn toward inflation and the consumer price index reading in the upcoming week. The three major indexes are on pace to end the week down, with the S & P 500 poised to post its worst performance since December. Sharp declines for Alphabet , which is off by more than 9% this week, dragged the tech-heavy index. January's consumer price index With the latest Powell speech in the books, investors are now looking ahead to the consumer price index for insight into the pace of inflation. "Retail sales and CPI is really driven by the consumer, and a lot of eyes are on how the consumer doing," Bruno said.
Wall Street is bullish on the California-headquartered company, which makes the enzymes for Pfizer's Covid-19 oral antiviral treatment ; all eight equity analysts covering the stock give it a buy rating. Their median price target points to a 118% potential upside over the 12 months, according to FactSet. "We believe that PRGN's R & D event will validate the key value propositions that underscore PRGN-2012," said Cantor Fitzgerald's analysts in a note to clients on Jan. 12. Other companies on the list include the London-listed stock of Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Genus , which analysts expect to rise by more than 40% over the next 12 months. Clinical diagnostics company Bio-Rad Lab and Sweden-headquartered IVF specialist Vitrolife are the other stocks expected to go up by analysts.
