In 2017, at 19 years old, Jack Kellogg became interested in stock trading. AdvertisementIn 2023, he took advantage of the AI hype by trading stocks within that theme. He then reviews these stocks' price movements over the previous three to two weeks. Where it's set depends on how much he's willing to risk on each position and varies based on the stock's price movements. While he's agnostic about the stock's cap size, he favors swing trading mid and sometimes small-cap stocks.

The artificial intelligence revolution is just getting started, and that means there are opportunities for investors to scoop up some names at a discount, according to Evercore ISI. Yet adoption is low, with less than 5% of U.S. firms reporting using AI, he said, citing U.S. Census Bureau data. To find "AI revolutionaries" that are trading at a discount, Evercore ISI looked for companies in the Russell 1000 with strongly trending AI mentions — either surpassing the index or the company's sector average. One of the names on the list is Uber Technologies , which mentioned AI 17 times last year. The company is also using AI to increase productivity.

Stock futures pushed higher on Sunday evening as Wall Street looks to find its footing following a steep sell off for tech companies. Futures the S&P 500 rose 0.3%. Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.4%, while those for the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 96 points, or 0.3%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite tell 3.05% and 5.52% last week, and are each on six day losing streaks. The Dow , which has less tech exposure than the other two benchmark averages, was little changed on the week.

Alaska Air shares just getting started Alaska Air Group has recently broken above a key resistance level and could represent a compelling option for investors searching for stocks earlier on in their uptrends. Alaska remained below that retracement level as well as a declining 200-day moving average until this week. Now we're seeing ALK power above $42 with an initial upside target at the 61.8% retracement level around $47. The momentum characteristics are consistent with bullish phases, with Alaska becoming overbought this week after a quick rise. While overbought conditions could indicate a short-term pullback in the coming weeks, we're inclined to assume this uptrend could be just getting started.

A majority of respondents — 61% — in the latest CNBC Delivering Alpha Stock Survey believe the broader market has run too far, too fast heading into the second quarter and a pullback is near. The S & P 500 is up more than 9% in the first quarter, which would be its best start to a year since 2019. When it comes to investing domestically 26% said the Nasdaq 100 was the best place to be compared to 13% from the S & P 500. That stock is up 245% in a year and 120% in six months far outpacing every other stock in the S & P 500 except for Super Micro Computer . The rest think we're more likely to be in the 5%-to-10% range for an annual return for the S & P in the next decade.

Benedict is a former hedge fund manager who later founded The Opportunistic Trader, an information and education service about his strategies. And he's not the only hedge fund veteran trying out products that are open to retail investors. The WZRD ETF won't be a buy and hold strategy common among ETFs, according to securities filings and the Opportunistic Trader team. Sell at least some Some are saying it's time to sell or that they have already sold part of their Nvidia shares. Paul Gambles, managing partner of MBMG Family Office Group, told CNBC Pro on Monday that he'd sell Nvidia right now. Stick with it Louis Navellier of Navellier and Associates is still fairly bullish, and says it's definitely not time to sell any Nvidia shares yet. After Nvidia's selloff, he reiterated his position, saying he has no plans to sell Nvidia.

One of Wall Street's favorite investment vehicles turns 25 years old on Sunday, but shows no signs of fading to the background as it ages. One of the main conversation points around the 2023 rally for the QQQ, and the entire U.S. market, is the dominance of just a handful of key stocks. Over the years, many key stocks have left the fund, including former top performers like Nextel Communications and Sun Microsystems, which were bought out. Related plays Competition in the ETF industry for the QQQ has expanded dramatically over the past quarter century, including from other Invesco funds. That fund is less than four years old but has already surpassed $20 billion in total assets.

The broad market index has also posted gains in 16 of the last 18 weeks — something that, according to Deutsche Bank strategist Jim Reid, hasn't happened since 1971. However, some on Wall Street now fear the market may have overextended itself to the upside, clearing the way for a pullback from record levels. BTIG chief market technician Jonathan Krinsky also noted there's a divergence never before seen in Big Tech. Volmageddon refers to a massive volatility spike in early 2018 in which the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) more than doubled to more than 50. Bottom line: A short-term pullback in stocks could take place soon, if history is any guide.

Couple this with the multiple signals for exhaustion that are typical near market tops, it warrants taking action. Troubling technical signs We've seen the SPDR S & P 500 Trust (SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) both exhibit higher highs in price while momentum and their advance-decline lines print lower highs. And lastly, these same signals are showing up across the major sectors, and individual stocks that have led this rally such as Nvidia. Overall, these are signs of exhaustion for this rally and raises the probability of a pullback. With the Wall Street's fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index ( VIX) , trading just above 13, purchasing downside protection on a portfolio using SPY options is relatively inexpensive.

As S&P approaches 5,000, this one trend has been unwavering

It's been a bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000, but the overall trend stays with big cap tech. Talk about timing: It launched just as the S & P 500 was recovering from the banking crisis, and MAGS has been one of the star ETF performers of the last year. A bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000 The S & P 500 had been comfortably over 4,000 from mid-2021 into mid-2022, when rising rates pushed the broad index below 4,000. This is true not just this year, but since the S & P went over 4,000 at the end of March, as has international investing. If you own the S & P 500, which has become tech-dominant, you are happy.

If these tech giants disappoint in their earnings outlook, that would be enough reason for this rally to fizzle out, and Nasdaq could finally see a pullback. Here's a 6-month daily chart of the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) ,which closely follows Nasdaq's price movement and can be used as a proxy to trade tech stocks. You may find trading platforms using other names like "put debit spread" or "long put spread," but they all mean the same. I did this because this trade is designed as a hedge against disappointing tech earnings, which are all happening this week, so I don't need a longer expiration date. QQQ 6M mountain QQQ, 6 months Since this trade is taken as a hedge, the expectation should be that if the markets don't tank after tech earnings, I will lose my initial investment.

We know all about the Nasdaq-100 index and the 'Magnificent 7' hype lately, but what about the stocks next in line? Well, the Invesco NASDAQ Next Gen 100 ETF (QQQJ) tracks the next biggest 100 Nasdaq stocks after the Nasdaq 100 – roughly Nasdaq stocks Nos. This isn't a surprise given that tech is the biggest sector in the Nasdaq Composite itself. Most importantly, the top 10 NDX stocks represent nearly 46% of the entire index. In fact, a similar scenario occurred in 2022 that eventually led to QQQJ outperforming NDX later in the year.

Fundstrat's Tom Lee believes that the technology sector will one day make up 50% of the S&P 500. During periods of extended labor shortages, like during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1990s, technology stocks significantly outperformed the S&P 500. "Technology demand, in our view, will accelerate as companies seek to offset labor shortage," Fundstrat said. "The outperformance of technology during periods of labor shortage is substantial — and we believe the forecasted 2015 to 2047 [labor shortage] to benefit technology stocks," Fundstrat said in a recent note. "We like technology/FAANG $XLK $QQQ," Lee said, referring to the mega-cap tech stocks, the technology sector, and the Nasdaq 100.

As we head into the early innings of earnings season, this year has been off to a shaky start. Let's discuss how traders can hedge themselves ahead of that using options. In my opinion, except for Nvidia, there are almost no notable technology companies that have seen significant growth in their revenues last year, or will see significant growth within the next 6-12 months due to AI. I believe now is the time to pull the trigger on a market hedge using the Invesco QQQ Trust as we head into what could be a turbulent earnings season. Using the QQQ ETF, which tracks the Nasdaq-100 index, I'm looking out to March and buying the $400/$370 put vertical at a $6.39 net debit.

A few days ago, S & P noted that the S & P 500 total return of 25.85% would only be up 9.49% ex the Magnificent 7. If you own the S & P 500 long-term, you are participating in those gains. The S & P is up 1,200 points (25%) since then and is knocking on the door of an historic high. The S & P 500 is overbought and expensive on most metrics. The S & P 500 up almost 25% in a year is the kind of problem a lot of people would be happy to have.

Five companies (Apple , Microsoft , Amazon , Nvidia and Alphabet ) make up about 25% of the S&P 500. Standard & Poor's estimates that nearly $13 trillion is directly or indirectly indexed to the S&P 500. The three largest ETFs (SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust , iShares Core S&P 500 ETF , and Vanguard S&P 500 ETF ) are all directly indexed to the S&P 500 and collectively have nearly $1.2 trillion in assets under management. Cracks are beginning to appear in the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index . I have shown a chart of Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) which is an ETF that tracks the Nasdaq 100. Finding a stock to put on a bearish trade The stock I have picked for a bearish trade is Netflix (NFLX) . Starting Nov. 29, NFLX price candles are forming lower highs and lower lows, which is the easiest way to spot a downtrend. The trade structure I am using here is called a "bear put spread" also known as a "put debit spread".

A recent uptick for a broad-based tech ETF could signal that the market is ready for a rally in software stocks, regardless of size, according to Oppenheimer. Given Oppenheimer's coverage in the former, we think it's important to flag that the equal-weighted S & P Software & Services SPDR (XSW) reclaimed its Q2 breakout above its year-long bottoming pattern. A big rally for the XSW would be a change of pace from the strength of the so-called "Magnificent Seven" tech stocks that have dominated the market in 2023. And the fund's holdings mean that investors won't be adding even more exposure to all of the Magnificent Seven. Though the fund is broad, it does not include all categories of what many investors consider to be tech stocks.
