Based on the Boston Globe and Wondery podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.” and adapted by Stuart Zicherman, “American Sports Story,” which premieres Tuesday on FX, chronicles Hernandez’s meteoric rise to NFL superstardom and his stunning fall from grace after his arrest and eventual conviction of first-degree murder in 2015. Aaron Hernandez was a monster, a killer — and that’s just the way people talked about him. Michael DeHoog / Getty Images fileIn the years since his death, Hernandez’s sexuality has been the subject of much speculation, with some of his loved ones claiming he had come out as gay. “A person struggling with his sexuality in the NFL when Aaron played in 2010, 2011, would not have been tolerated, not one bit,” Zicherman said. Analysts are increasingly recommending defensive stocks to blunt the impact of an economic slowdown. The S&P 500's consumer staples sector has risen more than 4% in the last month. AdvertisementAmid fears of a recession and increased market volatility, analysts have been pointing to defensive stocks as a safe bet to hedge macro risk. Among defensive sectors — which include things like real estate and financials — investors recently have been pouring into consumer staples in particular. With the Federal Reserve likely to finally cut rates at its meeting this week, defensive stocks could be poised for further growth.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe aviation industry still sees so-called "sustainable aviation fuel" (SAF) as the only viable way to meet its decarbonization targets, even as opposition and the potential for higher costs for passengers pose obstacles to the fast-growing sector. SAF is a broad term describing fuel that is burned by an aircraft engine, but instead of using kerosene is derived from more sustainable sources. The planemaker said it is collaborating with producer HIF Global on the development of methane-based fuels, and investing in alcohol-to-jet fuel producer LanzaJet. But IATA's own forecast for SAF production to triple in 2024 to 1.9 billion liters would cover just 0.53% of aviation fuel demand for the year. "The truth is, it's going to be more expensive, you can't really sugarcoat that," said HIF Global's Clara Bowman.

Why Trump’s trade hero turned against tariffs
  + stars: | 2024-09-14 | by ( Zachary B. Wolf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +15 min
Vice President Kamala Harris has lambasted Trump’s tariff plan as a tax, but President Joe Biden has maintained tariffs Trump put in place during his presidency. We used trade policy, or tariffs, as a form of reciprocity, where we said, OK, our tariffs are pretty high. So that’s what led to all these trade agreements, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, GATT, which became the WTO (World Trade Organization), NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and other free trade agreements that we’ve reached. He began to entertain this idea of reciprocity, of trying to reduce foreign tariffs by offering cuts in our tariffs. How do those tariffs compare with the late 19th century tariffs?

The WGA won higher pay and residuals for its writers, provisions for minimum staff in television writers' rooms, and more, calling the agreement "exceptional." Advertisement"The conglomerates have the leverage," one TV agent put it. This model could lead to a show getting picked up, but it tended to use fewer writers than regular writers' rooms and pay them less. A third agent said some showrunners are grumbling that while mini-room writers' pay increased post-strike, studios kept the showrunners' pay the same. Wholesale prices rose in August about in line with expectations, the final inflation data point as the Federal Reserve gets set to lower interest rates. The core increase was the same when excluding trade services. On a 12-month basis, headline PPI rose 1.7%. On the PPI measure, services prices pushed much of the gain, with a 0.4% monthly increase driven by a rise in services less trade, transportation and warehousing. The release comes a day after the BLS reported that consumer prices rose 0.2% on the month in line with expectations.

CNN —US producer prices continued to cool overall in August, showing that inflation across the economy is improving. But a closely watched measure of underlying inflation remained stubbornly elevated, reflecting the bumpiness in reining in price hikes. August’s monthly increase was driven by a 0.4% gain on the services side, as goods prices were unchanged, thanks in part to falling energy prices. Economists had expected that prices would increase 0.2% on a monthly basis and 1.8% annually, according to FactSet estimates. Excluding the more volatile categories of food and energy, core PPI advanced 0.3% from July, countering a 0.2% decline seen the month before.
