Economists polled by FactSet had anticipated a 0.1% rise in monthly wholesale inflation. Excluding food and energy prices, so-called “core” producer inflation rose 2.3% on an annual basis, the same level seen in April. PPI captures average price shifts before they reach consumers and serves as a potential bellwether for retail-level inflation in the months ahead. The new inflation data follows May’s Consumer Price Index released Wednesday, which showed that the pace of price increase consumers see across goods and services cooled to 3.3% from 3.4% in April. But others expressed concerns that the fall in producer prices may actually represent a negative consequence.

Several London hospitals, still under significant strain more than a week after a cyberattack crippled services, have asked medical students to volunteer to help minimize disruption, as thousands of blood samples have had to be discarded and operations postponed. The ransomware attack on Synnovis, a private firm that analyzes blood tests, has crippled services at two major National Health Service hospital trusts, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ and King’s College, which described the situation as “critical.”According to a memo leaked in recent days, several London hospitals asked medical students to volunteer for 10- to 12-hour shifts. “We urgently need volunteers to step forward and support our pathology services,” said the message, which was reported earlier by the BBC. “The ripple effect of this extremely serious incident is felt across various hospital, community and mental health services in our region.”The attack also disrupted blood transfusions, and the N.H.S. appealed to the public this week for blood donors with O-negative blood types, which can be used in transfusions for any blood type, and O-positive blood types, which is the most frequently occurring blood type, saying it could not match patients’ blood at the same frequency as usual.

The trial of Senator Robert Menendez was paused on Thursday after the judge announced that one of the senator’s co-defendants, Fred Daibes, a New Jersey real estate developer, had tested positive for Covid-19. The judge, Sidney H. Stein, said it was “the expectation and the hope of the court” that the trial could resume Monday, given revised federal Covid guidelines and depending on how quickly Mr. Daibes begins to recover. Mr. Daibes is on trial with the senator and another defendant in a sprawling bribery conspiracy case in which prosecutors say Mr. Menendez, 70, and his wife, Nadine Menendez, 57, accepted gold, cash and a luxury car in exchange for the senator’s agreeing to dispense political favors at home and abroad. Ms. Menendez’s trial was postponed until at least August because she is being treated for breast cancer. All four defendants have pleaded not guilty.

“I never loved him,” Trump said of Valadao, according to a GOP member. Trump did not shy away from acknowledging the bad blood between House Speaker Mike Johnson and GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who unsuccessfully tried to oust Johnson against Trump’s wishes. House Republicans voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress on Wednesday. In his meeting with GOP lawmakers, Trump called the Department of Justice “dirty no good bastards,” according to another source in the room. In a news conference after the meeting, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer said that the former president’s felony convictions have only energized the party that will propel them to victory in November.

Do they go from success to success, powered by their natural brilliance? The first is the social science answer. Social science researchers give promising children intelligence tests, and then they check in on them over the ensuing decades to see how much the students’ early intelligence correlates with lifetime success. The social science answer is that higher intelligence correlates strongly with positive educational and career outcomes. By the 1950s, two-thirds of the Terman kids had become college graduates, a figure 10 times that of the general population.

New York CNN —Elon Musk said late on Wednesday that Tesla shareholders have re-approved a pay package worth billions that was already thrown out by a Delaware judge earlier this year in a vote that also approved moving Tesla to Texas. “Both Tesla shareholder resolutions are currently passing by wide margins! He famously bought social media platform Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, selling $22.9 billion of his Tesla shares to help fund that purchase. But perhaps a more serious concern among Tesla shareholders is the pioneering electric car company itself. Even with Musk’s pay package again endorsed by shareholders, the Delaware court could still have the final say.

Republican presidential candidate, former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during his campaign rally at Sunset Park on June 09, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Donald Trump on Thursday brought up the idea of imposing an "all tariff policy" that would ultimately enable the U.S. to get rid of the income tax, sources in a private meeting with the Republican presidential candidate told CNBC. Trump in a Truth Social post later Thursday morning said there was "lots discussed, all positive" in the meeting, without providing any more details. Trump's remark about replacing income taxes with tariffs quickly drew critics. Trump was later impeached in the House for inciting the violent mob that stormed the Capitol and temporarily halted the peaceful transfer of presidential power.

A dairy worker in Texas contracts H5N1 bird flu after contact with infected cows, and suffers eye inflammation. Weeks later, a dairy worker in Michigan begins to cough and then tests positive for the virus. These data and other recent cases of H5N1 suggest that the virus might be evolving to spread more easily to — and among — people. One implication is that while U.S. health authorities say the risk to the general public remains low, that risk could increase quickly. For instance, why isn’t blood testing for signs of the virus among dairy workers now mandatory in all U.S. dairy operations?

Like so many speculative growth ETFs and stocks, the S & P SPDR Biotech (XBI) ETF is nowhere close to its former all-time high from early 2021. Even though the ETF now is up considerably from that point, many traders still have wanted nothing to do with it. We can understand why, especially when so many other stocks surpassed their respective former highs many months ago. The vertical blue lines depict when the 50-DMA crossing OVER the 200-DMA led to strong and extended upside follow through. It's been a challenging few years for XBI, but as these charts show, the blueprint for a continued comeback is there.

June's historical average return comes out at just 0.1% while July typically sees a 1.2% gain, according to Stovall. Summer exception This summer could prove to be an exception to the typical summer lull, given the upcoming presidential election, Stovall said, noting that the broad market index has posted an average 3.7% summer increase during the 19 election years since World War II. Ahead of this year's election, Stovall expects a few aerospace and defense contractors to stand out. Other areas of the market that should survive and thrive during a slow summer period are consumer staples companies, tobacco names, health-care distributors and pharmaceuticals, Stovall said. Costco and Walmart shares are up roughly 29% and 2% this year, respectively, posting strong returns as consumers have become more motivated by price and value in a high-inflation environment.

"But rate cuts starting by September should now be cemented as overwhelmingly likely."
