BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Sweden has not done anything to boost confidence in its suitability for NATO membership, and has given the impression that joining the alliance is not a priority for the country, an aide to Hungary's prime minister said on Thursday. Sweden applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in May 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine but the accession process, which requires the approval of all existing members, has been held up by Turkey and Hungary. Gulyas suggested that Sweden's foreign minister or prime minister should "get in touch and ask what concerns the Hungarian parliament has" about Sweden's NATO accession. Replying to a reporter's question, he said Hungary wanted to avoid being the last country to ratify Sweden's NATO accession, but "we will probably not manage to do so without Sweden's help. The Turkish parliament's general assembly may debate Sweden's NATO membership bid in the coming weeks, the ruling AK Party's parliamentary group chairman said last week.

TikTok has started shilling products for sale using videos that have nothing to do with shopping, as it continues its charge into e-commerce. The company is using artificial intelligence to scan videos, identify items, and encourage users to buy similar products through its e-commerce marketplace, TikTok Shop. The company uses machine-object detection to identify products in videos and suggest similar product categories, they said. TikTok added a "Shop now" button to Insider reporter Shriya Bhattacharya's video, encouraging other users to shop for wedding dresses on TikTok Shop. The arrival of shopping buttons on regular TikTok videos shows how deeply the company is integrating e-commerce into the app's overall user experience.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New House Speaker Mike Johnson inherits many of the same problems that bedeviled Republican leaders with far more experience. But can he unite House Republicans where others failed? Trump, who is running for a second White House term, enthusiastically backed Johnson and said he will be “a fantastic speaker." The House Republican Conference is deeply divided on those issues. The intractability of many House Republicans forced McCarthy to turn to Democrats for help in keeping the government running.

Fighting began on Oct. 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel as part of its goal to end Israeli occupation. Israel has since retaliated by bombing Gaza, and an estimated 1,400 Israelis and 3,000 Palestinians have been killed so far. The ICC is investigating potential atrocity crimes that Hamas militants in Israel and Israelis in the Gaza Strip have committed since 2014, which also covers the current conflict. We came here to say enough is enough," Rafat Alkayyali, 50, said, adding that he came to the ICC to protest because he believes in international law. Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., arrives to the U.S. Capitol for a procedural vote on a motion to vacate against Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Federal prosecutors hit Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., with 23 additional charges Tuesday, including allegations of identity theft and that he charged a supporter's credit card in excess of their contribution and then transferred the money to his personal bank account. He's also alleged to have been involved in a credit card scheme where the campaign would charge contributors' credit cards repeatedly and above FEC individual contribution limits. On another occasion, he allegedly "charged $12,000 to the Contributor's credit card, ultimately transferring the vast majority of that money into his personal bank account." Marks pleaded guilty last week to some of the same conduct involving false FEC filings that Santos was charged with Tuesday.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas police chief who led an August raid on a small weekly newspaper seemed to have the support of most city leaders in the weeks since the search, despite public outcry and calls for his resignation. Publisher Eric Meyer told Cody via email that the paper got the document from a source it did not name. Newell said that on Aug. 7, Cody contacted her and told her he believed she had been the victim of a crime. On Aug. 8, Cody emailed the KBI's office in Wichita, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) to the southwest. That evening, Leeds sent Marion Police Officer Zach Hudlin an email about a search warrant for Meyer's home.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told his Republican caucus members he will bring a motion that seeks to oust him to a vote Tuesday afternoon, two GOP lawmakers told NBC News. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., a longtime foe of McCarthy's, on Monday night filed a motion to vacate targeting the speaker's position. Gaetz has been threatening McCarthy with a motion to vacate since he worked with Democrats on a debt ceiling deal in the spring. McCarthy told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Tuesday morning that Gaetz has "personal things in his life that he has challenges with." In January, as a condition to secure enough votes to become speaker, McCarthy agreed to change the rules to lower the threshold needed to bring a motion to oust a speaker from five votes to just one.
