High interest rates have been a boon to Americans holding cash, but many on Wall Street are cautioning investors to start thinking ahead. People have been piling into cash vehicles like money market funds and certificates of deposit since the Federal Reserve started hiking interest rates. Interest rates appear to be staying higher for longer, with the Federal Reserve on Wednesday projecting only one rate cut this year. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Roger, who is affiliated with the Haley Voters Working Group. Experts say the "hidden costs" of owning a home, especially repairs and maintenance, can come as a shock for homeowners. Based on that calculation, Bankrate estimated, annual maintenance costs in some of the states with the highest home prices — like California, Hawaii and Massachusetts — can go over $26,000 annually. Keep your 'critical eye' as a homeownerOnce you become a homeowner, it will be important to keep up with routine maintenance in your house. To avoid surprises, try to regularly inspect your home and look for spots or corners that may need to be fixed. While homeowners are "the most critical" of a house when they're buying, they often don't keep the "critical eye" after moving in, said Hicks.

June's historical average return comes out at just 0.1% while July typically sees a 1.2% gain, according to Stovall. Summer exception This summer could prove to be an exception to the typical summer lull, given the upcoming presidential election, Stovall said, noting that the broad market index has posted an average 3.7% summer increase during the 19 election years since World War II. Ahead of this year's election, Stovall expects a few aerospace and defense contractors to stand out. Other areas of the market that should survive and thrive during a slow summer period are consumer staples companies, tobacco names, health-care distributors and pharmaceuticals, Stovall said. Costco and Walmart shares are up roughly 29% and 2% this year, respectively, posting strong returns as consumers have become more motivated by price and value in a high-inflation environment.

No One Told the Cows Not to Lick the Artwork
  + stars: | 2024-06-10 | by ( Thomas Rogers | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
On Sunday morning, Roman Mathis, a farmer on the outskirts of the bucolic Swiss city of Basel, noted with concern that one of his cows was standing in a small wading pool filled with beans that had recently been installed next to his barn. It wasn’t wholly unexpected: Mathis had allowed gallerists and artists to use his property as part of a freewheeling art event called the Basel Social Club. As he stared at the pool, he couldn’t tell if it was it was an artwork or a random piece of detritus, and if he should shoo the animal away. “Some of this art speaks to me, though at a certain point it passes a threshold,” Mathis said, gesturing to black inflatable tubes that had been affixed to his barn’s facade. “But it’s been interesting to go along with it.”

Kremlin officials have claimed that the Su-57 has seen combat in Ukraine, although the evidence supporting the claims is extremely limited. A Russian Su-57 fighter jet makes a demonstration flight during the opening of the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon in Zhukovsky outside Moscow on July 20, 2021. The second half of this year is the perfect time for Walmart, according to JPMorgan. The firm upgraded Walmart to overweight from neutral and raised its price target to $81, which represents a 23% gain from Friday's close. Walmart also said it would hit the high-end of its full-year guidance as it won over more higher-income shoppers. JPMorgan said that, along with liking Walmart's individual merits, there was also a macroeconomic reason behind the call. JPMorgan said it was maintaining its 2024 EPS forecast of $2.57, which is above the $2.43 Wall Street consensus and raising its 2025 EPS estimate to $2.86.

For young, secular, politically progressive men and women, having children has become something of an afterthought. Indeed, the data suggest that people are having children later than they used to and are having fewer than they’d like. Unreserved enthusiasm for having children can come across as essentially reactionary. Over the past four years, we’ve conducted interviews and surveys with hundreds of young Americans about their attitudes toward having children. If they are not, they face a choice of returning to the dating pool, freezing their eggs (if they haven’t done so already), single parenting or giving up their hope of having kids of their own.

When Jordan Bardella, the leader of the far-right National Rally party, called on Macron to dissolve the French national parliament on Sunday night, it seemed like political posturing, riding high on his victory in European polls.
