Black women are more likely than white women to die from even the most treatable types of breast cancer, a study published Tuesday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found. While Black women and white women are diagnosed with breast cancer at similar rates, Black women are 40% more likely to die from the disease. For those with HR-positive, HER2-positive tumors, Black women were 34% more likely to die than white women. Black women were 17% more likely to die from triple-negative breast cancer than white women, a finding that surprised Warner. “If you look at breast cancer data from 40 years ago, there really weren’t differences in mortality for breast cancer between Black and white women.

The Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of Kisqali, a drug for metastatic breast cancer, to also treat patients with earlier stages of the disease, drugmaker Novartis said Tuesday. The approval means that tens of thousands of women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer will have access to a medication that can help prevent their cancer from coming back. The expanded approval is for patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, the most common form of the disease. It comes as rates of breast cancer are increasing in younger women: From 2000 to 2019, rates of breast cancer in women ages 20 to 49 increased by 15.6% according to a study published earlier this year in JAMA Network Open. “You’re always going to be faced with the fact every single day that you have had breast cancer,” she said.

A new poll by the civil rights group NAACP released Friday found that more than a quarter of Black men under 50 years old support Trump over Harris. At NABJ, she described embarking on an "economic opportunity tour focused on Black men" earlier this year, before she was a candidate for president. Now, the passenger has been ordered to pay $8,630 AUD ($5,806 USD) back to the airline to cover the cost of the wasted fuel. While charging a disruptive traveler for the cost of fuel is not a typical penalty, other kinds of fines are more common. The single highest individual penalty, $40,823, was issued to a traveler who brought their own alcohol on board, was intoxicated, attempted to smoke marijuana in the lavatory, and sexually assaulted a flight attendant – all in a single flight.

“The second reason that breast density is important is because having dense breast tissue raises a woman’s level of risk of developing breast cancer,” Feigin said. Breast cancer survivor JoAnn Pushkin, 64, has advocated for more than a decade that there be a national requirement for women to be notified of their breast density. Now I have lymphedema, and all because it was detected at that later stage,” said Pushkin, who has testified before the FDA about breast density and co-created the website DenseBreast-info.org, which features resources on breast density. The new FDA changes require facilities to provide patients with information about their breast density and include specific language in the mammogram result letter to explain how breast density can influence the accuracy of a mammogram. A study published in 2022 found that the breast cancer death rate dropped by 43% within three decades, from 1989 to 2020, translating to 460,000 fewer breast cancer deaths during that time.

The New York Stock Exchange welcomes executives and guests of Roblox in celebration of its direct listing, March 10, 2021. Roblox , the popular kid's gaming platform that generates billions of dollars a year in the virtual world, is getting real. The company said on Friday that some game developers on the platform will be able to charge users real money rather than relying on payments through Roblox's digital currency called Robux. Game creators can now more easily sell to users without dealing with an intermediary virtual currency. It's part of the company's ambitious plans to facilitate 10% of all global gaming content sales through the Roblox platform and reach 300 million daily active users.

Abbott Laboratories announced Thursday its over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor Lingo is available in the U.S. starting at $49. These devices, called continuous glucose monitors, are small sensors that stick through the skin to measure real-time glucose levels. Continuous glucose monitors have served as tools for patients with diabetes, but Lingo is not intended for diabetes management. The company released its over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor geared toward this demographic in late August. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Dexcom's Stelo in March, and it cleared two over-the-counter continuous glucose monitoring systems from Abbott in June.
