September 9 - The Atlanta Braves seem to be in taking-care-of-business mode with the Pittsburgh Pirates in town. The Braves (92-48) opened a three-game series against the Pirates with an 8-2 win Friday, flexing their considerable muscle on offense while benefiting from strong pitching. After that, the Braves reeled off seven straight series wins before dropping two of three games to the Cardinals. The Braves, however, set the tone for this set by carving up the Pirates ace Mitch Keller on Friday. Oviedo has faced the Braves once, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief on July 4, 2022, while pitching for St. Louis.

Nearly eight years ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates began a three-game series on the road against the Detroit Tigers with a 5-4 win in 14 innings. Yankees Manager Aaron Boone said he expects the matchup between veteran aces to add “a little extra buzz” to the crosstown rivalry. Cole and Verlander will always be linked for the two seasons they bullied major league batters while anchoring the Houston Astros’ starting rotation. In 2018 and 2019, the two years Cole spent with the Astros, Houston’s co-aces combined to go 72-25 with a 2.62 E.R.A. In 2019, they led the Astros to their second American League pennant in three seasons, though they lost the World Series to the Washington Nationals in seven games.

Toronto right-hander Kevin Gausman allowed six runs, seven hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings before the bullpen locked down the victory. Ian Gibaut (6-1) recorded five outs to earn the victory and Alexis Diaz pitched the ninth inning to earn his 15th save. The Giants erupted for 15 hits, seven for extra bases, and their fourth-most runs of the year to salvage one win in the three-game set.

PointsBet forecast a loss of between $77 million and $82 million for the second half of the year. "This is a 10-year journey," Matt King, the CEO of Fanatics Betting, said at the SBC Conference earlier this month. You can kind of move slower, slightly slower today, in order to move fast later." Fanatics owns commerce assets, a sports trading card business, and is building out a sports betting division. The company acquired legendary trading card company Topps for $500 million last year.
CNN —They say good things come to those who wait, and Drew Maggi has been waiting a long time for his major league call-up. The third baseman for the Altoona Curve – the Pittsburgh Pirates’ AAA affiliate – was drafted by the Pirates in the 15th round of the 2010 MLB draft but never played a big league game. Understandably, Maggi was pumped after spending his entire 13-year career in the minor leagues and celebrated alongside his teammates upon receiving the news. There were a lot of ups and downs, a lot of different people, injuries, a lot of stuff happens. So, being here, it feels right.”Maggi had most recently been playing with the Altoona Curve, the Pittsburgh Pirates' AAA affiliate.
