LOS ANGELES, March 12 (Reuters) - Independent film studio A24 emerged as the big winner at Oscar night on Sunday, sweeping every major category, propelled by the quirky, reality-bending film "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and the drama "The Whale." The studio claimed a total of nine Academy Awards, with "Everything Everywhere All at Once" receiving seven Oscars, including for best picture, director, actress, original screenplay and supporting actor and actress. Disney's leading Oscar contender, "The Banshees of Inisherin," received multiple nominations, but no awards. CNN celebrated its first Oscar win for "Navalny," a portrait of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, which won best documentary feature film. NBCUniversal collected 15 nominations, led by Universal Picture’s "The Fabelmans," directed by Steven Spielberg, and six for "Tar" from Focus Features, but no Oscars.

Curtis, who built a career in horror films such as "Halloween," won best supporting actress for playing a frumpy tax agent named Deirdre Beaubeirdre. "The Whale" star Brendan Fraser, known for 1990s roles such as "The Mummy" and "Encino Man," won best actor for playing a severely obese man trying to reconnect with his daughter. "Naatu Naatu," a song from the Indian movie "RRR" that created a viral dance sensation, was honored as best original song. The 95th Academy Awards ceremony was broadcast live on Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) ABC network.

The FTC warned companies to avoid overselling their AI products in a blog post on Monday. It called AI a "hot marketing" term that some companies won't be able to stop themselves from "abusing." The craze has caused an AI arms race between Big Tech companies like Microsoft and Google. News organizations like Buzzfeed and CNET have also begun using AI. "Is it any wonder that we can be primed to accept what marketers say about new tools and devices that supposedly reflect the abilities and benefits of artificial intelligence (AI)?"

A viral tweet over the weekend started a debate around the "Avatar" movies and animation. The tweet asserts that "Avatar: The Way of Water" should be considered an animated film at the Oscars. And, last week, it was nominated for best visual effects at this year's Oscars — an award that the first "Avatar" movie won 13 years ago. "Avatar is an animated film and should've been put in the animated film category," tweeted artist Matthew Robert Davies, who's worked on TV shows "Roy" and "The Adventures of Paddington." It would be hard to argue that the "Avatar" movies could not be mistaken for live action.

Ana de Armas garnered an Academy Award nomination for best actress in a leading role for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix's "Blonde" — amid controversy over the movie. De Armas, 34, was nominated for the Oscar a day after “Blonde” got eight Razzie Award nominations, including worst picture and screenplay, further underscoring how polarizing the film has been. This is the Cuban-born actor's first Oscar nomination. Her performance in the movie also earned de Armas her second Golden Globe nomination last year. “Argentina, 1985” won a Golden Globe last month for best non-English language motion picture.

CNN —The nominees for the 80th Golden Globe Awards were announced on Monday. Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva, two of the stars from “Lopez vs. Lopez,” announced the range of film and television nominees as selected by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Favored Oscars contender “The Banshees of Inisherin” led the film categories, with nominations including best musical or comedy film. It stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The ceremony, which was not broadcast last January over controversy surrounding the HFPA, will return to NBC on Jan. 10.

CNN —The mere title “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” announces that this stop-motion animated movie reflects the keen eye and visual style of the directing auteur, with a healthy dose of revisionism and reimagining baked into that. Yet despite its beauty, several of those narrative touches don’t fully work, leaving behind a movie that’s aesthetically lovely but narratively uneven. Perhaps foremost, del Toro makes the ill-advised decision to incorporate songs into the story, although he keeps interrupting them, which might speak to a certain lack of conviction about that particular aspect. It’s around that point where del Toro (who shares directing credit with animator Mark Gustafson) appears determined to connect this “Pinocchio” to larger and more ambitious themes. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” premieres December 9 on Netflix.

As a founding document of modern Italian literature, children’s literature and the Disney animation catalog, “Pinocchio” must have presented an irresistible challenge to an iconoclast like Guillermo del Toro , Oscar-winning Mexican director and mixologist of the tender and grotesque (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Shape of Water”). A wooden boy who longs to be real? Mr. Del Toro likely looked at timber the way Michelangelo gazed at marble. But for all its anti-traditionalist, antifascist and maybe even anti-Disney attitude, what “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” leaves on one’s palate is sweetness—bittersweetness, at times, though the stop-motion film is melancholic and sentimental without being cloying; goofy but intelligent; enchantingly musical and moralistic without preachments. It is also a paean to the love of fathers and sons: The puppeteer Geppetto is, after all, Pinocchio’s father, though it takes the old man a while to let that sink in.

Disney's "Lightyear" and "Strange World" have flopped at the box office this year. Its latest animated movie, "Strange World," opened over the Thanksgiving weekend with $18 million over the five-day holiday in the US. This year was the first real test of the pandemic era to see if Disney's animated films could attract large swaths of consumers to theaters. In 2020 and 2021, Disney's animated movies either went straight to Disney+ or received a hybrid release on streaming and in theaters. But this year, Disney's movies have typically been released in theaters for 45 days before debuting on the streaming service.

Operating income fell 91% to $83 million mostly due to higher than expected losses from the Direct-to-Consumer business. In better news, Disney ended Q4 with 164.2 million Disney+ subscribers, up 12.1 million from the prior quarter and well above estimates of about 160.45 million. Bundling has a negative effect on ARPUs, and Disney said Tuesday evening that bundled and multiproduct offerings now make up over 40% of domestic Disney+ subscribers. In terms of subscribers, Disney sees core Disney+ subscribers slightly increasing in its first quarter, though Disney+ Hotstar is expected to lose subs due to the absence of the Indian Premier League Cricket rights. After checking consensus estimates, this is a terrible miss compared to expectations of sales growing by 11% and operating income increasing by 17%.
