MANCHESTER, England, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Manchester City got back to winning ways in thrilling style after coming from two goals down to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 on Thursday, a victory that moved the champions to within five points of Premier League leaders Arsenal. Looking to avoid a third successive defeat in all competitions, City were sluggish from the off and went into the break two goals behind after Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal netted in quick succession at the end of the opening period. Three goals in 12 second-half minutes, however, quickly turned the match on its head, as strikes from Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland, the Norwegian's first in four appearances in all competitions, and Riyad Mahrez put City in front. With the visitors chasing an equaliser down the other end, Mahrez added a late fourth to keep City well in the title race, five behind Arsenal having played one game more than the Gunners, while Spurs stay fifth, five points off the top four. Premier League talking points

Jan 15 (Reuters) - Talking points from the latest round of Premier League games:RAMSDALE PROVES HIS WORTH TO KEEP GUNNERS ON TRACKGoalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has had his critics at Arsenal but the 24-year-old proved his worth in the league leaders' 2-0 victory at rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, making a string of fine saves to keep Spurs at bay. "We showed the other face when we had to dig in, we needed some big moments from Aaron," coach Mikel Arteta said. Manchester United's dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over rivals Manchester City on Saturday was not without its fair share of controversy. Rashford was deemed not to have interfered and the goal stood, before the in-form England forward went on to score the winner. "I understand he (Rashford) doesn't touch the ball but he's running for 30 metres until the last second.
England forward Rashford completed the turnaround eight minutes from time to score for the seventh successive match in all competitions, the first United player to do so since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008. City were furious the goal was awarded after a VAR review, with Rashford initially flagged offside before letting Fernandes take the shot ahead of him. We'll celebrate a big win but from tomorrow our focus has to be on the next game." Brighton picked up their first home league victory against Liverpool since January 1961 as they climbed above their opponents into seventh. The same players played outstanding football matches before but if things aren't properly organised then it can look like that.
MANCHESTER, England, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Manchester United made it four wins from four without conceding in all competitions since the World Cup break as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over lowly Bournemouth in the Premier League on Tuesday to consolidate their hold on fourth spot. Bournemouth never really threatened to get an equaliser, with the game effectively over as a contest after a rare goal from England full-back Luke Shaw doubled the hosts' advantage early in the second half. The win gives United a five-point cushion over Tottenham Hotspur in fifth and draws them level on points with third-placed Newcastle United, who drew 0-0 at leaders Arsenal. NOTTINGHAM, England, Jan 1 (Reuters) - Chelsea dropped more points in their quest to climb back up the Premier League standings as Serge Aurier earned Nottingham Forest a 1-1 draw with Graham Potter's side on Sunday. Forest improved after the break and were desperately unlucky not to equalise early in the second half as Morgan Gibbs-White's drilled half volley hit the underside of the crossbar but bounced on the goal line and away. They could not complete the turnaround, however, with Chelsea hanging on for a point that leaves them eighth in the standings, seven points behind Manchester United in fourth. The hosts remain in the relegation zone but climbed to 18th, level on 14 points with West Ham United above them. The second half we didn't control it well enough."

LEEDS, England, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Erling Haaland continued his incredible season in front of goal with a brace to help Manchester City cruise to a 3-1 victory at Leeds United on Wednesday, ensuring the champions closed the gap to Premier League leaders Arsenal to five points. It appeared City would go into the interval frustrated, before Spanish midfielder Rodri finally made one count in first half stoppage time, firing home after another Meslier save. The victory helped second-placed City move back to within five points Arsenal at the top of the standings, while Leeds stay 15th, two points clear of the relegation zone. "I have a (goal) target but I cannot say it," Haaland told Amazon. Leeds boss Jesse Marsch felt the timing of the goals his side conceded were their undoing.

But the Samoans, who did not win a single match at the 2017 World Cup, tore up the script. No Pacific Island team had previously made the Rugby League World Cup final and no nation have made their debut in the final since 1998. "Samoa making the Grand Final is a massive achievement, it's really reuniting Samoans, not just here in Samoa but all around the world," Tagaloa Faafouina Su'a, Samoa rugby league federation president and chairman, told Reuters. The Kangaroos have a 100% record against Samoa in rugby league tests, with the aggregate scoreline from their two World Cup clashes 112-10. Today we weren't on it from the start, especially at the start of the game and we lost our balance. "We didn't follow the rules defending, and we lost our battles. "You have to cross at the right moment," he added. "The right moment was from Christian Eriksen in the first half to deliver, when he found the right moment, I think he found the pocket to deliver the ball to Cristiano (Ronaldo) at the far post. That was the right moment."

"I was nervous (for the penalty)," Haaland told Sky Sports. It seemed City had done all they could until De Bruyne was brought down in the penalty area, giving Haaland the chance to continue his incredible debut season in England. Haaland has now scored 16 goals in his last 10 Premier League appearances. Arsenal have the chance to take back the league lead when they travel to Chelsea on Sunday.
Now, Southgate is going further and further down his list just to fill seats on the plane. "The Chelsea medical staff have not given me a percentage of my chance of being back for the World Cup. Maguire has been a regular throughout Southgate's tenure, but has been demoted at United, starting only three league games this season. Rooney later suggested that going to the 2002 World Cup injured and playing through the pain was a mistake. Southgate's dilemma is does he risk defenders who have served him so well but aren't at 100%, or give others a chance.
Last week, in conjunction with a Spanish law firm, they sent a letter to world soccer's governing body FIFA demanding their own country be withdrawn from next month's World Cup. "Iran is different to any other country," former wrestling world junior champion and national team coach Sardar Pashaei told Reuters. They should be banned until we have a democratic country like any other country in the world." "One of the important reasons for banning this football team by FIFA is everybody across the world will ask, 'What happened to Iran?'" "Russia attacked Ukraine, killed people, so it was the right decision they got banned - the same should happen to Iran.
LEICESTER, England, Oct 29 (Reuters) - A stunning free kick from Kevin De Bruyne earned Manchester City a 1-0 victory at Leicester City on Saturday, a win that moved the champions back to the top of the Premier League. ""The free kick goes perfectly, luckily it's 1-0," De Bruyne told BT Sport. "It's not about the assist that Kevin always has, or the free kick. City have now kept a clean sheet in six of their 12 games this season, which is better than all other Premier League teams. "The difference was a moment of brilliance from probably the best player in the Premier League."
That's how long it took three dads to drive across the country to raise money for their sons' rare genetic disease. The three men drove from New York to California, starting at the Red Ball Garage in NYC and ending at The Portofino Hotel & Marina in Redondo Beach. Along the way, they were able to raise $156,000 in donations to help fund research for SYNGAP1-related non-syndromic intellectual disability, more commonly referred to as SYNGAP1. All donations go to the SynGAP Research Fund, a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that raises money for the illness. "Inviting other SYNGAP dads who are also fundraising for the kids just made the most sense," Stelmaszek adds.
Man City miss a trick as Arsenal just will not go away

MANCHESTER, England, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Liverpool's recent jitters meant they were there for the taking by Manchester City on Sunday, but the unusually conservative champions missed a trick, falling further behind Premier League leaders Arsenal who must be taken seriously as title contenders. While champions City, chasing a fifth league title in six seasons, travelled to Anfield unbeaten, having plundered 33 goals in nine league games at the start of the new campaign, Liverpool trailed in their wake. Liverpool looked nervy in possession, giving the ball away with regularity, but a normally ruthless City could not capitalise. With a four-point league lead, and having won 12 of their 13 games this season in all competitions, a first Premier League title since 2004 could be a realistic prospect. "Next time they will do it better, they didn't get me," Guardiola said. Liverpool later released a statement condemning some chants from City supporters during the match.
Salah raced away from Joao Cancelo to slot home and earn Liverpool a much-needed victory after they came into the encounter having suffered their worst start to a Premier League season after eight games since 2012-13. Hopefully this gives us more confidence," Salah, who had missed a similar opportunity to his goal earlier in the game, said. Liverpool kept coming at City after their VAR reprieve, with Salah spinning away superbly after a slip from Cancelo before firing the winner, sparking wild celebrations on the Kop. Salah has now been directly involved in 14 goals against City in all competitions for Liverpool - nine goals, five assists - his most against any opponent for the Reds. The final pass was lacking for the visitors in the end as Liverpool held on for just their third league win of the season.
MANCHESTER, England, Oct 11 (Reuters) - British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe said he had contacted Manchester United owners the Glazer family about buying the English Premier League club, but was told they were not for sale. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Register"Manchester United is owned by the Glazer family, whom I have met," Ratcliffe told an event hosted by the Financial Times on Tuesday. "If it had have been for sale in the summer, yes, we would have probably had a go following on from the Chelsea thing, but we can't sit around hoping that one day Manchester United will become available." Purchasing another Premier League team is not out of the question. "We have an exciting sporting franchise (Nice in France's Ligue 1), but the one thing we don't have is a Premier (League) team," Ratcliffe added.
