The New Tiffany, Unboxed

For nearly four years, the Tiffany & Company flagship store on the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 57th Street was shrouded in scaffolding while it underwent a full-bore renovation. In the days before the reopening, set for April 28, a Tiffany executive vice president, Alexandre Arnault, and the company’s chief executive, Anthony Ledru, monitored final preparations as they whispered to each other in French. Display cases glittered with Tiffany pieces — heart tag bracelets, Elsa Peretti Bone cuffs and Paloma Picasso necklaces. Digital screens encircling the room showed an animation of a diamond-encrusted bird fluttering across the New York City skyline. We decided to do both.”He gestured toward the digitized bird, noting that it was based on a design by the noted Tiffany jewelry artist Jean Schlumberger.
BuzzFeed is shutting down its namesake news division, which won acclaim for its journalism but fell prey to the punishing economics of digital publishing that has laid low many of its peers. Jonah Peretti, BuzzFeed’s chief executive, said in an email to employees on Thursday that he was closing BuzzFeed News as part of a broader round of cuts at the company. About 60 people will be affected by the shuttering of the news division, some of whom will be offered jobs at other parts of the company. BuzzFeed’s decision is the latest in a series of financial setbacks faced by digital media companies. The media industry writ large has pivoted to focus on streaming, and digital advertising — a mainstay for digital publishing companies — is increasingly going to tech platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
What's happening in the digital media space echoes trends from the biggest media companies, including Netflix , Disney and Warner Bros. The rollup dream's rise and fallFrom late 2018 to early 2022, the digital media industry had a shared goal. First, digital media companies needed more scale to compete with Facebook and Google for digital advertising dollars. Large legacy media companies such as Disney and Comcast 's NBCUniversal invested hundreds of millions in digital media in the early and mid-2010s. "The digital media rollup has proven successful only when assets are thoughtfully combined with an eye toward consumers," Goldberg said.
Some BuzzFeed writers told Insider that they are disappointed by the company's move to use AI for content. But one BuzzFeed staffer said that its an exciting development and that it won't replace jobs. But she worries that the quality of BuzzFeed content will suffer as a result. But a second BuzzFeed staffer told Insider that she isn't worried that AI will replace writers at the company. "I think the actual applications of how this will apply to new quiz formats is exciting," the second BuzzFeed staffer said.
Artificial intelligence out-buzzes the blockchain
  + stars: | 2023-01-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, Jan 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The blockchain is so last year. The newest craze to excite investors is artificial intelligence. It’s a welcome boost for the $300 million company, whose stock price has been in the dumps since it merged with a blank-check firm in 2021. In 2017 shares in beverage company Long Island Iced Tea almost quadrupled in value after it rebranded as Long Blockchain. In the internet craze of the late 1990s, companies enjoyed a stock price boost by adding “dot-com” to their nameplate.
BuzzFeed is reportedly set to use ChatGPT creator OpenAI's technology in content creation. BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Perett told staff it would use tech to boost its quizzes and personalize some other content, per the WSJ. We asked ChatGPT generated a listicle in the style of BuzzFeed. A BuzzFeed spokesperson clarified to Insider the outlet will be not be using the wildly popular ChatGPT platform, but OpenAI's publicly available API. We put ChatGPT to the test by asking the platform to write a listicle based on "10 things that are better in other countries compared to the US" in BuzzFeed style.
BuzzFeed's part of that group too — but it's come up with a peculiar idea to ramp up business (and stock). Similar to other companies, BuzzFeed laid off 12% of its workforce last month, citing a worsening economic environment. The stock also got a boost from news of the media company's partnership with Meta, which will see BuzzFeed bring more content to Facebook and Instagram. It's unclear how ChatGPT's parent, OpenAI, ties into Meta's multi-million dollar deal with BuzzFeed, if at all, but the agreement is meant to boost creator content for Facebook and Instagram. It was the king of viral content and quirky listicles — and Facebook of course had a hand in getting eyeballs on BuzzFeed.
BuzzFeed soars on reports of Meta deal, plans to use OpenAI

Jan 26 (Reuters) - Shares of BuzzFeed Inc (BZFD.O) jumped on Thursday on reports of a deal with Meta Platforms Inc (META.O) and plans to use artificial intelligence to personalize and enhance the digital media firm's online quizzes and content. Buzzfeed, in an emailed response to Reuters, said "we are not using ChatGPT - we are using OpenAI's publicly available API (application programming interface)." Earlier in the day, the stock had jumped 50% on a separate report by the Journal that said Meta was paying BuzzFeed millions of dollars to bring more creators to Facebook and Instagram. Indicating interest from retail traders, BuzzFeed shares were among the top three orders on Fidelity's platform on Thursday. Its third-quarter net loss had widened to $27 million from $3.6 million a year ago.
BuzzFeed Inc. said it would rely on ChatGPT creator OpenAI to enhance its quizzes and personalize some content for its audiences, becoming the latest digital publisher to embrace artificial intelligence. In a memo to staff sent Thursday morning, which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Chief Executive Jonah Peretti said he intends for AI to play a larger role in the company’s editorial and business operations this year.

“I think that there are two paths for AI in digital media,” Peretti said. But, with AI, the staffer could write the questions and the software could spit out a highly personalized response for the user. In the supplied example, a user would take a quick quiz and the AI would write a short RomCom using the data provided. “There’s the CNET path, and then there is the path that BuzzFeed is focused on,” Peretti said. “I think the content farm model of AI will feel very depressing and dystopian.”
BuzzFeed, for now, will not use artificial intelligence to help write news stories, a spokesperson told CNN. Media industry leaders have increasingly said that artificial intelligence will revolutionize their businesses. CNET recently used an artificial intelligence tool to help write stories. But, Guglielmo said, the outlet will not shy away from using artificial intelligence moving forward. The Associated Press also began using artificial intelligence to automate news stories nearly a decade ago.
Complex insiders worry that the cuts threaten their brand's culture and future. Before joining with BuzzFeed, Complex's then-CEO Rich Antoniello had conversations with Vice Media and Vox Media. New York CNN Business —BuzzFeed on Tuesday said it would lay off approximately 12% of its staff, making the digital news and entertainment conglomerate the latest media company to make painful cuts amid a deteriorating economic climate. In a note to impacted employees, Jonah Peretti, the company’s founder and chief executive, blamed the cuts on “a combination of worsening macroeconomic conditions” and changes in how people consume media. The spokesperson added that there were no cuts made to its Tasty food brand, BuzzFeed News, or HuffPost, which BuzzFeed also acquired. A slew of media companies have slashed costs in recent months as the advertising market weakens and the economic outlook becomes dimmer. “While I believe in the strategy we’re pursuing, and know it’s necessary to navigate the challenging year ahead, that’s no comfort if you are directly affected.”
BuzzFeed to cut 12% of its workforce
  + stars: | 2022-12-06 | by ( Stefan Sykes | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
The BuzzFeed website on a smartphone arranged in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, on Monday, Dec. 6, 2021. BuzzFeed on Tuesday announced plans to cut its workforce by nearly 12%, or around 180 staffers. The company expects to cut most of the jobs by the end of the first quarter. Last year, BuzzFeed went public via a special purpose acquisition vehicle, and shares fell nearly 40% in their first week of trading. Peretti said Tuesday that he wants the company to invest "in areas that will drive growth" and build "a more robust creator business."
Buzzfeed's ad revenue was flat year-over-year but ad revenue on its own properties grew. Facebook's shift to vertical video is causing issues for BuzzFeed, a publisher that has long relied on the platform to drive video views. The drop in Facebook traffic contributed to a big 32% year-over-year decline in time spent watching Buzzfeed's video content, according to Comscore. At the same time, Facebook is contributing less to BuzzFeed's revenue. Growth in ad revenue from BuzzFeed's owned and operated properties offset some of the declines on third-party platforms.
