Minutes after the humiliating defeat, in an apparent attempt to call voters’ bluff, Macron said he could not ignore the message sent by voters and took the “serious, heavy” decision to call a snap election – France’s first since 1997. The first round of votes eliminates weaker candidates ahead of the second round next Sunday. Typically, only a handful of deputies will be elected this way – but most will go to a second round. Only those who win more than 12.5% of ballots cast by registered voters are allowed to stand in the second round. Attal was reportedly among the last of Macron’s inner circle to learn that a snap election was imminent.

While criminal charges against corporations are fairly common, the overwhelming majority are against small, closely-held companies. Earlier criminal settlement now at riskThe potential charges hanging over Boeing currently revolve around that January 2021 deferred prosecution agreement. They have argued Boeing should face new criminal charges and pay a fine as great as $24.9 billion. In May, the Justice Department said it was looking into bringing criminal charges against Boeing once again due to a potential violation of that January 2021 agreement. Arlen said it is common for smaller companies to be forced out of business by criminal charges and the penalties that follow.

Political conversations are causing strife in our familyWhen I was in high school and living close to my grandmother, I would try to engage her in political debate, but conversations would all too often turn heated, sour, and sometimes even cruel. But it doesn't mean that we don't talk. We just don't talk about things outside our insular familial universe. "When I call your family — they always call right back," Halmoni tells me earnestly. Often, I feel that I'm being irresponsible by pretending like political conversations don't matter.

Expensive fuel, maintenance, and labor don't help, nor do unpredictable setbacks outside the airline's control, like pandemic travel bans and production slowdowns at planemaker Boeing. But across the industry, many airlines are struggling to turn profits thanks to issues like overcapacity, unrelenting competition, and unexpectedly high costs, according to experts. Boeing delivery delays have eaten into profitsHarteveldt said Boeing's ongoing delivery delays have cost airlines like American, Southwest, and United millions of dollars. Airlines are plagued by high costs in an extremely competitive industryNearly everything is more expensive than it was before the pandemic, and airlines are no exception. For low-cost carriers like Frontier and Spirit, these high costs make it challenging to make money, Kraemer said.

Biden must step aside, the argument will go, because he’s going to lose the election and only a different Democrat can save the country from Trumpian misrule. This is a necessary argument for its intended audiences: Americans who fear Trump above all else and a Democratic Party motivated by partisan self-interest. It is definitely true that if you believe America needs to be saved from Trumpism 2.0, continuing with Biden is a grave dereliction. But it’s also important, especially for those of us who are not Democratic partisans, to emphasize that declining to nominate Biden is essential not just if you hope to avert a second Trump term. It’s essential if you want to protect the country from a second Biden term — from the ways that his obvious deterioration endangers the country that he nominally leads.

“I knew I wanted to have my own business,” Mrs. Monrroy said on a recent weekday afternoon on Hollywood Boulevard, where her childhood wish has come true. “Mango, water, soda, Gatorade, hot dog!” she calls out to the crowds traipsing over Hollywood Walk of Fame stars dedicated to Bruce Willis and Billy Crystal. In Los Angeles alone, an estimated 10,000 street vendors sell food. Until recently, vendors along Hollywood Boulevard were operating outside the law. And while longtime street vendors respect and recognize the turf of other regulars, there are more sellers working in the area, and competition has increased.

CNN —Hundreds of basketball-size space rocks slam into Mars each year, leaving behind impact craters and causing rumblings across the red planet, according to new research. During its time on Mars, InSight used its seismometer to detect more than 1,300 marsquakes, which take place when the Martian subsurface cracks due to pressure and heat. Meteoroids are space rocks that have broken away from larger rocky bodies and range in size from dust grains to small asteroids, according to NASA. “We’re interested in studying that on Mars because we can then compare and contrast what’s happening on Mars to what’s happening on the Earth. Between 280 and 360 meteoroids hit the red planet each year, and they form impact craters larger than 26 feet (8 meters) across, according to the study.

AdvertisementAs the way we save for retirement has evolved, some people are now cashing in on the golden age for retirement savings — when benefits were more generous and investments in real estate and stocks boomed. While it's still possible to achieve, a fat retirement account has become rarer. AdvertisementBack in 2007, per GAO's calculations of the Survey of Consumer Finances, around 21% of low-income households had a retirement account balance. While losses weren't as profound for those in the middle-income quintile, their retirement account balances did fall slightly from 2007 to 2019. All of that comes as retirement savings become more of an individual onus.

As negotiations to end the long legal brawl between Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, and the United States reached a critical point this spring, prosecutors presented his lawyers with a choice so madcap that a person involved thought it sounded like a line from a Monty Python movie. His path to freedom, he was told, would pass through one of the two American-held islands in the blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Mr. Assange, who feared being imprisoned for the rest of his life in the United States, had long insisted on one condition for any plea deal: that he never set foot in the country. The U.S. government, in turn, had demanded that Mr. Assange plead guilty to a felony for violating the Espionage Act, which required him to appear before a federal judge. In April, a lawyer with the Justice Department’s national security division broke the impasse with a sly workaround: How about an American courtroom that wasn’t actually inside mainland America?

For the ATRFX fund, this means betting on currencies, equities, commodities, and bonds, but not in a direct way. Instead, it employs everything from arbitrage strategies, riding out momentum and interest rates, or sitting on the sidelines when it's choppy. Over the last couple of years, higher interest rates have brought in some good yields. Related storiesOne step further is to arbitrage interest rates across currencies. Investors can do this by identifying national currencies with low interest rates, borrowing in that currency, and then lending in the currencies with higher interest rates.
