Basketball players’ style — largely in the men’s league, but increasingly the women’s too — has become a bonafide pillar in fashion media and consumption. Basketball players’ style has more eyes on it than any other sport, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Mitchell S. Jackson told CNN. “(The league) was the first to embrace it,” Jackson, author of the recently released photobook “Fly: The Big Book of Basketball Fashion,” explained. “Basketball players are so much a part of American culture. Bettman/Getty Images/Courtesy Workman“We talk a lot about current NBA tunnel style, but the league has been America’s most stylish for decades,” Schube continued.

Opinion | The Teen Trend of Sexual Choking
  + stars: | 2024-04-25 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
To the Editor:Re “Why We Need to Talk About Teen Sex,” by Peggy Orenstein (Opinion guest essay, April 14):As a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst who has worked for decades with teens and college-age students, I’m disturbed but not surprised by the trend of choking during sex. Choking is obviously very dangerous, and unfortunately, social media has made this once uncommon practice more mainstream. Education is the key with both our youth and parents. Yes, sexual strangulation needs to be part of ongoing conversations about safe sex practices. There is a line, a boundary, where rough sex, whether it’s consensual or not, crosses into danger, causing devastating long-term effects for participants.

Debby Herbenick is one of the foremost researchers on American sexual behavior. The director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University and the author of the pointedly titled book “Yes, Your Kid,” she usually shares her data, no matter how explicit, without judgment. So I was surprised by how concerned she seemed when we checked in on Zoom recently: “I haven’t often felt so strongly about getting research out there,” she told me. As someone whose been writing for well over a decade about young people’s attitudes and early experience with sex in all its forms, I’d also begun clocking this phenomenon. (Note: There is no safe way to strangle someone.)

Saturday marks the final day of early voting before Tuesday’s presidential primary and turnout so far has been light. The results of the Program for International Student Assessment – the first assessment to examine the academic progress of students in math, reading and science in dozens of countries since the outset of the pandemic – marked historic setbacks for children globally. Students hadn’t recorded a change of more than five points in either subject since the exam was first administered in 2000. The COVID-era setbacks spared none, affecting wealthy countries and poor countries and even those long recognized as academic powerhouses. The slumping scores among American students largely mirror results seen on national assessments in recent years. “At an extremely tough time in education, the United States moved up in the world rankings in reading, math, and science – all three categories PISA measures – while, unfortunately, many other countries saw declines.”
