Bausch + Lomb parent company Bausch Health is spinning off the eye-care company with an upcoming IPO which will list on the New York Stock Exchange and TSX with the ticker symbol “BLCO”. This would greatly benefit BLCO stockholders, of which Bausch Health is the largest. As an 88% owner of BLCO, Bausch Health's value derived from such a sale would be $12.32 billion. Adding the value of the proceeds from BLCO sale, the Xifaxan cash flows and RemainCo yields a total value of $25.93 billion for Bausch Health. After subtracting 100% of the Bausch Health debt, that would yield an equity value of $10.49 billion or $28.19 per share.

CNN —A phased reopening of Apalachee High School, the scene of this year’s deadliest school shooting, is scheduled to begin September 24. The area where the Apalachee High shooting unfolded, J Hall, will be closed for the rest of the school year after two students and two teachers were killed in the September 4 attack. “Everyone is processing or will process a tragedy differently,” said Michelle Kefford, principal at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Among its advice: ensure all physical damage is repaired and let staff members “feel comfortable in their building” before students return. “Thank you for your patience, understanding, and trust,” the Apalachee High administrators ended their letter.

Is TikTok trying to secretly influence Americans at the behest of the Chinese government? And an analysis of the ownership structure of TikTok parent company ByteDance, obtained by NBC News, argues that the company is deeply entangled with some of China’s major government propaganda organs. The most recent one, published last month, found that TikTok suppresses anti-China content compared to YouTube and other social media platforms. In recent years, according to media reports, Chinese government entities have increasingly taken golden shares in technology companies. “This report establishes that TikTok algorithms actively suppress content critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) while simultaneously boosting pro-China propaganda and promoting distracting, irrelevant content,” the researchers wrote.

In Japan, for example, most people are actually quite satisfied with housing costs. In recent years, rising rents and home prices driven by a severe housing shortage — coupled with elevated mortgage rates — have caused Americans' housing costs to soar to near-record levels of unaffordability. Some experts have pointed to Japan, where housing costs are lower than peer countries, as a potential model for solutions the US could adopt. While Japan's abundance of housing isn't entirely a positive story, when it comes to Tokyo, housing experts say there are many lessons the US could learn from its ally. AdvertisementWhile a population slowdown could help moderate housing costs, some experts believe a substantial population decline would have big economic consequences in the long run.

Swallowed eels escape via predator fish’s gills
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( Mindy Weisberger | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Dark sleeper fish (Odontobutis obscura) can gulp down young Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) whole, but the swallowed eels can wriggle back up through the digestive tract and out of the stomach, swimming to freedom through the bigger fish’s gills, scientists recently discovered. “Witnessing the eels’ desperate escape from the predator’s stomach to the gills was truly astonishing for us.”A Japanese eel exhibits circling behavior along a predator's stomach wall in this X-ray video footage. But while they observed swallowed eels wriggling tailfirst from dark sleepers’ gills, “we had no understanding of their escape routes and behavioral patterns during the escape because it occurred inside the predator’s body,” Hasegawa said via email. Once a predator swallowed an eel, the sated fish was quickly moved to a special tank where the X-ray video camera was ready to roll. On average, it took about 3 ½ minutes for a swallowed eel to reappear and swim away.

The rate of fraud alerts is "absolutely" going up, according to Deloitte U.S. risk & financial advisory principal Satish Lalchand. About 60% of credit card holders in 2023 experienced some sort of attempted fraud, according to Experian. "Fraud in general across all channels, whether it's check fraud, credit card fraud payments, the peer-to-peer payments, everything, is significantly increasing at a very rapid pace," Lalchand said. It has forecast a persistent threat that could reach nearly $400 billion in card fraud in the decade to 2032. "When we come down to credit cards, financial institutions are investing more in the concept of fraud and fraud modernization, replacing older technology and having better fraud detection capabilities, and retuning their alerts," Lalchand said.

The rate of weight loss with the experimental pill, called amycretin, appears to be more rapid than what’s seen for other drugs. “It’s roughly double the weight loss rate seen with current GLP-1 agonists and approaching procedural or surgical-level outcomes,” said Dr. Christopher McGowan, a gastroenterologist who runs a weight loss clinic in North Carolina. McGowan said that while the weight loss was significant, he still has concerns about how fast people lost weight. “While losing weight is seemingly the end goal, how that weight is lost matters,” he said. David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs, during an interview for an episode of "The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations" in New York on Aug. 6, 2024. Goldman Sachs will post a roughly $400 million pretax hit to third-quarter results as the bank continues to unwind its ill-fated consumer business. CEO David Solomon said Monday at a conference that by unloading Goldman's GM Card business, as well as a separate portfolio of loans, the bank would post a hit to revenues when it reports results next month. It is the latest turbulence related to Solomon's push into consumer retail. Goldman's credit card business, in particular its Apple Card, allowed rapid growth in retail lending, but also led to losses and friction with regulators.

“Teens need our support now more than ever.”Significant socioemotional development occurs during adolescence, along with substantial changes to brain structure and function. The researchers originally intended to track ordinary adolescent brain development over time, starting with MRIs the authors conducted on participants’ brains in 2018. The study revealed accelerated cortical thinning in the post-pandemic brains of teens — occurring in 30 brain regions across both hemispheres and all lobes for girls, and in only two regions for boys. The prevalence of the thinning amounted to 43% and 6% of the studied brain regions for girls and boys, respectively. The regions affected in boys’ brains are involved in processing objects in the visual field as well as faces.
