Pay transparency has become a cornerstone of the labor force in recent years, with Colorado becoming the first state to require employers post pay ranges on job ads in 2021. The federal government, the largest employer in the U.S., wants to make the salary history question a thing of the past. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management, OPM, introduced a proposal this week that would bar hiring managers from asking candidates about their salary history, and it could impact 1.5 million roles, Axios reports. Pay equity advocates say the salary history question perpetuates cycles of marginalized workers, namely women and people of color, being underpaid by basing their new pay on previous earnings, which could be artificially low due to discrimination. On average, women in the U.S. are paid 84 cents for every dollar paid to a man, and the gap widens for many women of color. The gap widens for women of color — 15% for Black women in comparison to what white men are paid, and 27% for Native women.
Managers who use AI will replace those who don't, Rob Thomas, an IBM exec, said during a press event. Last week, IBM announced the firm will pause hiring on roles that can be replaced by AI. Cutting-edge AI tools like ChatGPT isn't quite ready to replace managers — but those who don't learn how to use AI may be at-risk of losing their jobs. "AI may not replace managers, but the managers that use AI will replace the managers that do not," Rob Thomas, chief commercial officer at IBM, said during a recent press conference, TechCrunch reported. Thomas's thoughts on AI come a week after IBM announced it would pause hiring on jobs that could be replaced by AI.

CNN —An investigation has been launched into allegations of employment discrimination and a hostile work environment at the National Football League (NFL), according to a joint statement from New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Attorney General Rob Bonta. It comes just over a year since the NFL was warned by a coalition of six attorneys general to take “swift action” to improve conditions for female employees. The attorneys general on Thursday issued subpoenas to the NFL seeking relevant information, the statement said. “No person should ever have to endure harassment, discrimination, or objectification in the workplace,” said NY Attorney General James. “No matter how powerful or influential, no institution is above the law, and we will ensure the NFL is held accountable.”“California will not tolerate any form of discrimination,” California Attorney General Bonta said.
DALLAS, April 26 (Reuters) - A Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) shareholder criticized its Chairman and CEO David Solomon on Wednesday at the bank's annual meeting and proposed its board appoint an independent chairman. The proposal, along with eight others put forward by shareholders, failed after receiving the support of 16% of stock holders who voted. All of Goldman's management proposals, including the appointment of its directors and executive compensation, were approved at its annual shareholder meeting, which was held in person in Dallas. "The Goldman Sachs processes look anything but robust -- to many of us outside observers and shareholders, they look pretty weak," Paul Chesser, a director at the National Legal and Policy Center, said at the bank's annual meeting. Shareholder calls for reports on lobbying, climate transition and pay equity got the support of 30% or more voters, according to preliminary tallies.
