Mummified remains of baboons in Egypt found over a century ago have long puzzled researchers. AdvertisementAdvertisementNew research on the mysterious remains of mummified baboons, found far from their natural habitat over a hundred years ago in Egypt, has shed light on the sacred significance of the primates in the ancient Arabian Peninsula. Kopp's discovery is the first time ancient DNA from a mummified non-human primate has successfully been analyzed to this extent. The exact location of Punt, Kopp told Insider, has long puzzled researchers due to references to the town being found in significant texts and artwork but not found on existing maps. And they even mummified baboons, which any primatologist will tell you is puzzling."

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union significantly escalated its walkout against Detroit's Three automakers, shutting down Ford's largest factory and threatening Jeep maker Stellantis. “Here's to hoping talks at Stellantis today are more productive than Ford yesterday,” Fain wrote on X, formerly Twitter, without saying what might happen. Ford's truck plant makes heavy-duty F-Series pickup trucks and large Ford and Lincoln SUVs, hitting the company's most lucrative products. The company, however, called the strike expansion “grossly irresponsible” and said it has made strong wage and benefit offers to the union. The Kentucky strike brings to 33,700 the number of workers on strike against the three automakers.

They note that the job cuts have occurred mainly at factories that make parts for assembly plants that were closed by strikes. In one case, layoffs have been imposed at a factory that uses supplies from a parts factory on strike. The factories that have been affected by layoffs are in six states: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana and New York. UAW President Shawn Fain countered in a statement that the automakers were using layoffs to pressure the union into settling the strike. Once metal stamping factories that supply multiple assembly plants have produced enough parts for non-striking facilities, the companies would likely shut them down.

Sep 27, 2023; Rome, ITA; Team Europe golfer Matt Fitzpatrick addresses the media in a press conference during a practice day for the Ryder Cup golf competition at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. The Englishman lost all five matches he contested across his Ryder Cup debut at age 22 in 2016, when the United States won 17-11, and in Europe's 19-9 defeat at Whistling Straits two years ago. Fitzpatrick, 29, said he is a better player after those experiences and knows how to prepare for tournaments such as the Ryder Cup after winning a major championship last year. Fitzpatrick said he was disappointed by his previous two appearances in the event but added that, in hindsight, he felt 2016 was too early for his Ryder Cup debut. The 44th Ryder Cup begins at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome on Friday.

McCarthy, though, has stopped short of committing to putting a Senate-passed short-term spending bill on the floor, knowing that doing so could mean a call for his ouster. During a call with the Republican conference Saturday afternoon, McCarthy pushed members to rally around a short-term spending bill that includes funds for border security. That would give House Republicans a position from which to begin negotiations with the Senate. It’s taking away leverage from House Republicans,” said GOP Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana. The UAW began striking at factories that make only a few vehicles – Ford Broncos and Rangers, Jeep Wranglers, Chevrolet mid-size pickups and GMC vans. Car prices were rising long before the auto workers even raised the possibility of a strike. Prices are almost certain to rise even if the strike is settled quickly, because the auto makers' labor costs will increase. “They could double our wages and not raise car prices and still make billions of dollars in profit,” he said during an online presentation to union members this week. It's all enough to make many motorists consider avoiding the car lot and keeping their current car a while longer.

But there’s a good chance at least some of them, at a mix of plants and companies, will walk out. Women who suffer miscarriages and stillbirths in El Salvador are sometimes accused of homicide and sentenced to years or even decades in prison. Now that Roe has been overturned, U.S. abortion-rights advocates are bracing for cases like these to become increasingly common in America. A small but growing group of abortion “abolitionists” are calling for women who get abortions to be charged with murder and criminally punished — even put to death. Amid these concerns, reproductive rights activists need to prepare for the possibility that testing for abortion drugs could happen here, too. Should prosecutors in Poland inspire copycats in American states, no health care provider should enable or support such a move.

The matchup will be shown for free on Prime Video, offering advertisers a wider audience than those with an Amazon Prime membership (Amazon ended 2022 with 168 million members , according to CIRP). One advantage for the union of a targeted strike is the potential to save resources and extend a possible strike. The union members who are on strike are eligible for $500 a week in strike benefits from the union’s strike fund. With targeted strikes, it’s possible that the companies will shut down operations and lay off members who are not technically on strike.
