The company raised its health plans' prices and renegotiated contracts with healthcare providers and vendors — including its pharmacy-benefit manager — to lower expenses. What It Was Like to Be a Jewish Banker

THE MONEY KINGS: The Epic Story of the Jewish Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America, by Daniel SchulmanOn Feb. 6, 1904, a group of powerful Jewish men met at the Fifth Avenue mansion of Jacob Schiff. Then he asked the same question my grandfather used to ask: What does it mean for the Jews? Schiff is the book’s central figure, and by the early 20th century, on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, his influence had spread beyond Wall Street. At the time, Jews were being raped and murdered in yet another series of pogroms in imperial Russia. These attacks burned such a lasting scar on the Jewish psyche that, earlier this year, an Israeli major general was moved to compare the slaughter of Israeli civilians on Oct. 7 to “a pogrom from our grandparents’ time.”

For the most part, people in the entertainment world could trust that they were on the same political page. That changed abruptly with the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. There was no flood of support on social media from celebrities. “I’ve always just thought I was in this little bubble and everyone’s supportive and it’s L.A. and no big deal. Jewish writers reacted with horror to the guild’s refusal to condemn the attacks on Israel.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Oscar Seikaly, CEO at NSI Insurance Group, which is based in Florida but underwrites policies nationally, about skyrocketing insurance premiums and how unpredictable disasters around the country raise prices for everyone. Over the past 10 years, insurance premiums have changed dramatically. AdvertisementAdvertisementTake the average house in Aspen: You have $5 million for the house, $3 million for the contents, another $2 million for loss of rents. All these insurance companies have to buy from reinsurance companies and there's only three or four main ones in the world. When you buy a $5 million house or a $10 million house, paying $30,000 or $20,000 a year is not going to make a difference.

Biden in May rolled out a new policy to deter illegal crossings, including deporting migrants and banning re-entry for five years, as his administration grappled with migration at record highs. He praised Biden for creating legal pathways for migrants but said they needed to be expanded. Hundreds of migrants who crossed without appointments have been forced to wait between two border walls. Within the last eight days, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had processed more than 5,000 migrants in the San Diego area, a San Diego official said on Thursday. An unprecedented number of migrants entering Mexico hail from othercontinents, as the trek to the U.S. southern border increasingly becomes a global migration route.

Insurance rates in Florida have tripled in recent years, according to Bloomberg. For the ultra-rich, insurance companies could sell five- to six- figure policies. Homeowners across Florida have seen rates increase threefold in the past few years, the report found. Weather risks, along with a combination of other factors, have caused insurance companies to pivot and stop issuing new policies in Florida. California, a state that is prone to wildfires and extreme weather, has also experienced an exodus of insurance companies.

"If you take away our health, you take away our wealth," Sanchez, a community planning manager at the Southeast Environmental Task Force, told Insider. The first-of-its-kind settlement with HUD could be a model for environmental justice advocates in other cities. If the city didn't agree to address environmental harms, it risked losing hundreds of millions of dollars in federal housing money. With summer movie season at its midpoint, Hollywood typically begins to turn its gaze toward the fall, when a trio of major film festivals acts as the unofficial kickoff to Oscar season. That’s because SAG-AFTRA is prohibiting members from promoting any film while the strike is on, an across-the-board ban that includes interviews, photo calls and red-carpet duties. Without those appearances, festivals will be sapped of the star power that is invaluable to raising a film’s profile. The first event that will probably be affected is the Venice Film Festival, which begins its 80th edition on Aug. 30 with the premiere of the sexy tennis comedy “Challengers,” starring Zendaya. Venice has lately rivaled Cannes for glamour and headlines, so the loss of famous actors would be a big blow.

Erdogan spoke as officials from Turkey, Sweden, Finland and NATO met on Wednesday in Ankara for talks to try to overcome Turkish objections holding up Sweden's NATO membership bid. The parties agreed to continue working on the "prospective concrete steps" for Sweden's NATO membership, the statement said. In justifying its objections to Swedish membership, Turkey has accused Stockholm of harbouring members of Kurdish militant groups it considers to be terrorists. While he was having talks with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg earlier this month, a similar protest was held in Stockholm, Erdogan said. He added that he also told Stoltenberg Sweden should prevent such actions to secure Turkey's approval for its NATO membership.

Hundreds of misdemeanors were thrown out in court on Tuesday, and eight felonies are expected to be tossed Wednesday. CNN —An accused MS-13 gang member has been arrested in Holiday, Florida, and charged in what the sheriff described as a “demonic” murder of an Uber Eats delivery driver whose remains were found dismembered at the suspect’s home last week, according to investigators. Investigators believe Solis tried to rob the driver and ultimately killed him, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The sheriff said Solis is affiliated with MS-13, a violent criminal gang with international ties to drug and human trafficking. When investigators opened the trash bags at the home on Friday, they found what appeared to be human remains in two of the bags, the complaint said. There is no known connection between the suspect and victim, Nocco said.
