Between June 2018 and December 2021 there was a 25% tax imposed on the spirit, which decreased American whiskey exports by 18%. American whiskey exports to the EU jumped 118% in the first half of 2023 when compared to the same period in 2022. They went back and forth until 2021 when the tariffs on American whiskey were suspended and we took a great sigh of relief. The Biden administration’s leadership and efforts on this have enabled the suspension of tariffs on American whiskey and all distilled spirits products, but we are rightly anxious because a 50% tariff on American whiskey would be beyond devastating to exports. Since those tariffs have been suspended, we’ve seen American whiskey exports rebound to beyond pre-pandemic levels.

CNN —Ahead of high-stakes meetings next week between the United States and China, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo dismissed the notion there would be a military conflict with China over Taiwan. Both the United States and China “have a desire to stabilize (their) relationship,” Raimondo told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an interviewed that aired Saturday. Raimondo noted the world is looking to the United States and China “to be responsible and manage this relationship.”Raimondo acknowledged there is a “great competition” with China, echoing similar sentiments expressed by President Joe Biden, who has stated the United States wants competition with China, rather than outright hostility and conflict. At the same time, Raimondo said she has told China “there can be no negotiation when it comes to matters of national security,” particularly with regard to semiconductor chips used to manufacture advanced weapons. Also on the table are issues surrounding military communication between the United States and China, the climate crisis and narcotics trafficking.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Unilever (ULVR.L) top-10 investor Lindsell Train welcomed its recent management changes and said it had already discussed the consumer goods company's next steps with the incoming chairman. These moves demonstrated that Unilever thinks that a "fresh perspective on all aspects of the business is necessary", Nick Train, manager of the Finsbury Growth & Income Trust and co-founder of Lindsell Train, told Reuters. A bungled attempt to buy GSK's consumer healthcare business was followed by billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz joining the board. "We maintain a productive open dialogue with the company and most recently met with the new (Unilever) chairman to hear his view on the most beneficial next steps," Train said. Comprehensive equity strategies are an effective way to create a culture of ownership. Prioritizing a transparent and open dialogue can facilitate a culture of ownership and community where employees understand the value they bring to the company and their role in business success. Not only does this lead to more satisfied employees, but it also helps drive sustainable business growth. Among them: Incorporating equity compensation into a broader compensation strategy that aligns with your company's values and culture. In the US, for example, workplace financial benefits like equity compensation are often considered individual benefits for the employee.

Jacquelyn Martin/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDOHA, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Qatar's prime minister said on Wednesday that negotiations the Gulf Arab state is leading to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are progressing and he is hopeful there will soon be a breakthrough. Qatar's foreign ministry urged de-escalation and warned that an Israeli ground assault on the densely populated enclave would make freeing hostages "much more difficult." "There is some progress and some breakthrough and we remain hopeful," said Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani at a press conference in the Qatari capital. Also speaking in Doha, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said an Israeli ground operation into Gaza would turn the fighting there into a massacre.

REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDOHA, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Qatar's ruling emir on Tuesday urged the international community not to grant Israel "unrestricted authorisation to kill" Palestinians in its fight against Hamas, in what he called a dangerous escalation that threatens global security. Israel shouldn't be granted an unconditional green light and unrestricted authorisation to kill," Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said in an annual speech to open the Gulf Arab state's advisory Shura council, his first public comments since Qatar began its most recent efforts to mediate between Israel and Hamas. Since then, wealthy gas-producer Qatar has had an open dialogue with both Israel and Hamas which has brought about the release of four hostages held by Hamas, including two Israeli women on Monday. "We call for a serious regional and international stance against this dangerous escalation that we are witnessing, which threatens the security of the region and the world,” Sheikh Tamim said.

“With President Trump back in office, Israel, and everyone else, will be safe again!” he said. Trump’s original grievance-based analysis reflects a transactional, unorthodox approach to foreign policy that often prioritizes his own personal goals over a standard understanding of the national interest. Trump’s comments were not the first time he has appeared to seek a political benefit from his foreign policy and his positions on Israel especially. They also show Trump’s quintessential contempt for the rules of politics, foreign policy and even basic human decency, which explain why he horrifies many Americans and foreign governments. “He’s simply not expressing, and his imitators in his primary, are not expressing the same muscular American foreign policy that we lived out every day,” Pence said on a local New Hampshire radio.

CNN —The economic relationship between the US and China is mutually beneficial and opening lines of communication is key to maintaining it, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday. She is the fourth cabinet member to visit China this year and the first commerce secretary to visit China in five years. China hit back earlier this summer with its own export controls on gallium and germanium, raw materials essential for producing chips. But during her China visit, Raimondo was clear the US does not want to completely decouple from China when it comes to these semiconductors and chips. “We have plenty of tools in our toolbox … export controls, outbound investment screening, tariffs, countervailing duties.

But in order to fully benefit from in-office work, young-tenured employees also need experienced employees to work in the office as well. Now before the pitchforks come for me, I'm 100% supportive of remote work and I'm fully supportive of employee flexibility and all the great things that come with working remotely. But while many people talk about the benefits of remote work, few talk about its consequences. I've witnessed frequent situations where team members are reinventing the wheel due to reduced communication related to remote work. As a leader, my job is to create opportunities for team members to succeed, but also to be challenged.

The Pope said AI could lead to discrimination, but there should be an open dialogue to ensure it benefits humanity. To the Editor:Re “There’s a Reason So Many People Quit Antipsychotic Drugs,” by Daniel Bergner (Opinion guest essay, June 4):Thank you to Mr. Bergner and The New York Times for countering hate and prejudice and raising a voice of reason on the subject of forced psychiatric treatment. There are so many of us: those who were harmed by forced treatment, those whose loved ones were harmed, those who lost loved ones to horrible physical side effects of psychotropic medications or to suicide when people chose death over another round of forced treatment. Patients flock to the few places that offer effective, humane treatment modalities (Open Dialogue, Soteria House). Providing housing without preconditions along with access to voluntary mental health services is the best evidence-based practice recommended by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and used with great results all over the world. But it does not create a lot of profit for pharmaceutical companies and psychiatric hospitals.

Twitter suspended the accounts of PlainSite and its founder Aaron Greenspan, a prolific Tesla and Elon Musk critic, on Tuesday afternoon. PlainSite is an online database that makes state and federal court filings and other public records available to users for free. Greenspan has meticulously tracked litigation by or against companies mostly in the U.S., including Tesla, Twitter (which Musk took private in an acquisition last year), as well as competitors GM , Meta and a myriad of others. The suspension stands at odds with public statements from Twitter's executive chairman and CTO Elon Musk, and newly-appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino. He also discussed some of the reasons why he started the "legal transparency initiative" PlainSite, and how he came to be regarded as an Elon Musk nemesis.
