Major earnings reports and economic data will be in focus next week as investors seek clarity on how the Federal Reserve will proceed from here. But next week will bring the lion's share of results including reports from mega-cap darlings Alphabet, Amazon , Meta Platforms and Microsoft . While the S & P 500 is higher by 10% in 2023, the equal-weighted index is down slightly. Of note, Tesla shares sank more than 9% on Thursday following a pessimistic economic outlook from CEO Elon Musk during the company's earnings call. The freight shipping company, which went bankrupt in August after a protracted labor dispute, owns approximately 12,000 trucks and 35,000 trailers, according to its bankruptcy court filings. Yellow intends to conduct an auction for the vehicles by Oct 18 and seek court approval for the vehicle sale on Oct. 27. The company is taking a longer time to sell its real estate assets, despite having a $1.525 billion offer in hand from rival shipping company Estes Express Lines. Yellow has set a Nov. 9 bid deadline and expects to seek court approval for a real estate sale in December. A longer sale process will allow more competition for Yellow's 300 shipping terminals and other real estate assets, which have already generated significant interest from buyers.

Yellow said Estes' new bid is the best and superior to Old Dominion Freight Line Inc's (ODFL.O) $1.5 billion August stalking horse bid. Privately held Estes had submitted a $1.3 billion bid last month to acquire Yellow's shipment centers. A stalking horse bid is an initial bid on the assets of a bankrupt company, setting the low-end bidding bar so that other bidders cannot underbid the purchase price. "Estes Stalking Horse Bid is an improvement over the Old Dominion Bid because it offers more money for the Acquired Assets and less fees in terms of bid protections," Yellow said in a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. The nearly 100-year-old company filed for bankruptcy with just $39 million cash on hand, which it said was not enough to run a months-long bankruptcy sale for its 12,000 trucks, real estate holdings and other assets.

Missouri and Texas A&M were the first teams to join the SEC in 20 years. Financial benefits and concerns about conference stability lured Boston College to become the A.C.C.’s 12th member in 2005. Penn State, one of the last major programs to remain independent, became the Big Ten’s 11th member in 1993, setting off a wave of realignment across college football. The Missouri Valley Conference stopped sponsoring football after the 1985 season. Arkansas departed for the SEC in 1991, signaling the beginning of the end for the Southwest Conference, long associated with N.C.A.A.

Eva Marie Uzcategui | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesIt's not your imagination: Companies are getting stingier with customer rewards. Raising the barSome of the biggest shifts in customer perks have come in the airline industry. At many retailers, customers must now pay a return fee if they want to ship back unwanted clothing, shoes or other items. "To drive that online demand, free shipping and free returns were put in place, but now we all know it costs significant money," he said. Both companies aim to make sure membership isn't shared with people who aren't paying, particularly as the companies chase new avenues of growth.

Yellow's demise underscores the shift in the U.S. trucking industry from too few trucks and truck drivers during the pandemic to too many today. Most U.S. trucking companies have about 20% spare capacity in their networks, Stifel analyst Bruce Chan said in a client note on Monday. Yellow struggled for more than a decade after loading up on debt from acquisitions of rival trucking firms Roadway and USF. Still, it is not good news for Yellow's customers, which likely will face double-digit price increases when they turn that business over to companies, Chan said. "If you weren't prepared for this, it's probably a pretty tough day for you," Adamo said of Yellow's customers.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index has gained 3.2% this month, outperforming the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. The Dow’s gains suggest that investors are starting to buy more economically sensitive stocks as recent data show inflation slowing. That, in turn, indicates they’re becoming increasingly optimistic that the economy could avoid a recession. Conventional Wall Street wisdom says gains in the blue-chip index tend to precede rallies across the broader market. The Dow Jones Transport Average Index, an index of 20 stocks including railroad, trucker, airline and freight companies, has gained 24% this year.

NEW YORK, April 28 (Reuters) - Economically sensitive areas of the U.S. stock market are flashing warnings over growth, even as major equity indexes edge higher. Beneath the surface, however, areas of the market tied to economic sentiment such as transports, semiconductors and small-cap stocks dropped in April, while so-called defensive sectors are outperforming. “People are starting to more defensively position themselves,” said Aaron Dunn, co-head of the value equity team at Eaton Vance. "They are talking about demand being down and they are ridiculously important shipping companies,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak. CNN —If you want to earn rewards points at Best Buy, you’ll have to take out a Best Buy credit card to be able to redeem them. Starting next month, however, reward points will only be available to customers who hold a Best Buy credit card. Offering free rewards can be expensive for companies, and they are trying to control costs during a period of high inflation. The reaction to Best Buy’s move mirrored customer backlash after changes to Dunkin’ and Starbucks’ rewards programs last year. Dunkin’ said in October that it was replacing its old rewards program, DD Perks, with a new program called Dunkin’ rewards.
Growth stocks have been hit hard by a combination of rising rates and forecasts of an impending recession. But rather than pivoting toward an entirely defensive portfolio, Citi says investors might do better with a portfolio of stocks ranked high for value, growth and defensiveness simultaneously. Citi named U.S.-listed IT giant Accenture , trucking company Old Dominion and U.K.'s online car portal Auto Trader as "low risk, quality and growth" stocks. The Citi analysts said they screened the MSCI World index of 1,500 stocks for companies in the top quantiles for growth, low risk and quality simultaneously. "There are also several months where there is no overlap at all for value and in the past year the overlap of growth and defensive stocks has dropped from 25 to around 5," the analysts added.
