There was a lot of news this week, and I could not write a column about every event. Rumble on the Senate FloorOn Tuesday, Markwayne Mullin, a Republican senator from Oklahoma, challenged Sean O’Brien, the president of the Teamsters, to a fight during a Senate hearing. The two had previously exchanged insults after Mullin complained that unions were trying to undermine his plumbing business. He noted the caning of Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts by Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina, an incident that left Sumner seriously injured. That extremism produced a rigid and doctrinaire style of politics that condoned violence and, in short order, destabilized the nation’s political system.

The set-to between Mullin and O’Brien wasn’t the only incident of its kind in Congress this week. And though it may go without saying, what’s good for the basest kind of political entertainment isn’t necessarily good for Congress, the country as a whole or young men. I don’t have boys, but I know that by several measures, they are floundering compared to American girls. I don’t mean that in a “Won’t somebody please think of the children” kind of way. I just don’t think we can be a functional society if this becomes the new norm.

Azerbaijan objected in particular to "one-sided and biased" comments on Wednesday by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James O’Brien to the House Foreign Affairs Committee. It complained that O'Brien did not mention that "for more than two months Armenia has not been responding" to Azerbaijani peace proposals. The day Congress went back to fourth grade
  + stars: | 2023-11-15 | by ( Stephen Collinson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
The 118th Congress, which took an initial step to punt funding deadlines to the winter, looked more like a fourth grade class on a day that will further erode trust in government ahead of next year’s elections. Across Capitol Hill in the world’s so-called greatest deliberative body, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin was spoiling for a prize fight. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, however, suggested that policing the Capitol was beyond even his wily capacity to enforce discipline within his conference. And only in the malfunctioning Congress would a speaker try to prevent one government shutdown by laying the possible path for two others. Israel and Ukraine have nothing to thank Congress forThe most glaring example of Congress’ failure to fulfill its duty on Tuesday came at a pro-Israel demonstration on the National Mall.

For decades, the New York Philharmonic, the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, was an all-male bastion. Often described as the first woman to become a permanent member of the Philharmonic, O’Brien was part of a pioneering group of female artists who opened doors for other women. O’Brien, who retired from the Philharmonic in 2021 after a 55-year career, has resisted speaking publicly about her life in music, preferring to stay in the background. CHASING BRIGHT MEDUSAS: A Life of Willa Cather, by Benjamin TaylorDuring the difficult months of 2020, a writer friend and I decided to read Willa Cather’s fiction together. Much of it was rereading, but I’d missed some stories and novels, and I’d never read them sequentially or with a clear sense of Cather’s life. Tonally and politically different, written with obvious adoration or apparent dislike, focusing intently on Cather’s work or scrutinizing her private life — so many biographies! From Edith Lewis’s “personal record” in “Willa Cather Living” (1953) to the massive, almost day-by-day accounting of James Woodress’s “Willa Cather: A Literary Life” (1987) and the detailed critical readings of Hermione Lee’s “Willa Cather: Double Lives” (1989), I learned lots about Cather, and sometimes more than I wanted about her biographers. A fresh perspective on Cather’s sexuality came from Sharon O’Brien’s “Willa Cather: The Emerging Voice” (1986), while Joan Acocella provided a witty, abrasive take on academic analyses of Cather’s work in “Willa Cather and the Politics of Criticism” (2000).

Marin Ireland Photo: IFC FilmsOne could never faultMary Shelley for a lack of imagination, just a lack of available technology: Her 1818 “Frankenstein” offers no pseudo-scientific explanation for its Creature’s reanimation, only some vague primal force harnessed by the book’s title character. It was the movies, beginning in 1931, that suggested electricity as a means of fusing humans out of spare parts. What is suggested by the remarkable “birth/rebirth” is how Shelley’s story—its mythos, at any rate—can itself be brought back to vibrant life, time after time, by torquing modern medicine into increasingly plausible horror. The Shelley blueprint—which locates the fear factor in every scientific leap that humans make as they inevitably play God—is always paved with good scientific intentions. Rose and Celie mean well.

The Minnesota Vikings and the Las Vegas Raiders are proof that major midseason upheaval doesn't necessarily mean it's time to start aiming for the draft instead of the playoffs. I know what it was like to learn this in three weeks and have to get on the field," Risner said. “I know a lot of nicknames per se, but name names, that’s for this week, that’s the assignment for this week," he said. The Raiders became the first team since 2009 to score fewer than 20 points on offense in each of the first eight games of the season. “So if that’s the case," Gronkowski said, "I think Josh McDaniels comes back as offensive coordinator in New England, that’s for sure.”There'd be no Brady waiting for him this time.

17 Best Dress Shoes for Men, According to Style Experts

The laces and classic body shape are characteristic of traditional men’s dress shoes, while the rugged rubber soles still make a statement with any formal outfit. “Good leather shoes are not an arena in which it pays to cut costs,” he says, recommending investing in “the pair of a decade” from this made-in-England favorite. (Crockett & Jones has regal and Hollywood credentials: the brand received a Royal Warrant of Appointment in 2017, and this is the style of dress shoes worn by Daniel Craig’s James Bond). Sleek sneakersThe key to dressed-up sneakers is finding a leather pair free of busy accents or logos. The style is “acceptable to wear with dress clothes,” confirms Los Angeles-based personal stylist Rayne Parvis, who advises people to wear these sneakers in place of brown lace-up dress shoes.

AMERICA FANTASTICA, by Tim O’BrienWhen scientists take a core sample of fiction from the post-Trump era, they will discover American novelists struggling to unpack the political and social repercussions of his reign. Just as historians work to document the facts of the last 10 years, so, too, do novelists try to reveal their meaning. In “America Fantastica,” a manic road-trip-meets-crime-spree novel, O’Brien — the award-winning author of “The Things They Carried” and “Going After Cacciato” — speaks through an omniscient narrator, one who regularly interrupts the story to describe the spread of this so-called disease:Bullyism skyrocketed. husband, her scheming billionaire father, the married owners of the bank in question (who don’t report the robbery because they’re too busy robbing the bank themselves) and Angie’s homicidal, reality-challenged fiancé, who sets off in pursuit. But by adding a veneer of topicality, O’Brien aims to turn his characters into case studies for a nation’s moral failure.

Plus, it will be “productive for the gaming industry as a whole and healthy for competition in the gaming market,” he said. In the meantime, the U.K. regulator was the last major obstacle to the transaction going through. British regulators had initially blocked the transaction over concerns Microsoft could withhold Activision titles from the cloud gaming market. One factor was the EU’s approval, granted after Microsoft promised to automatically license Activision titles royalty-free to cloud gaming platforms. But the CMA's flip-flopping makes the U.K. regulator look “weak and indecisive,” he said.

When her husband, a UPS truck driver, nearly died from heatstroke, Theresa Klenk stepped in to help workers negotiate for air conditioning in all UPS trucks. At the time, she said, no UPS drivers wanted to speak up about the increasingly brutal conditions for fear of being reprimanded. According to UPS, drivers stop on average every three minutes — barely enough time for air-conditioning to make a dent. This year’s record heat caused dozens of deaths, filled some hospitals to pandemic levels and prompted government warnings about avoiding extended exposure to heat.
