Since 2018, Congress has been split 50-50, and nine of 31 state governors are now women - up from only one woman state governor five years ago. SET IN STONEThe push that also saw Lopez Obrador opt for gender parity in his first cabinet has ushered in a broader shift that looks very likely to yield Mexico's first woman president next year. Carla Humphrey, an INE commissioner who has helped lead the charge for equal representation, said the watershed dates back to gender parity recommendations enshrined in law in the 1990s. They were buttressed by 2012 changes that meant parties could have candidates disqualified if the rules were not met. Since 2019, Mexico's constitution requires gender parity in all elected positions.

REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Brazilian fintech Nubank's Mexico arm has requested a banking license from local regulators, the unit's top executive said on Thursday, describing it as a bid to broaden product offering. A banking license would allow Nubank to offer "diverse kinds of investments," including shares in Mexico's main stock index, the company said in a statement to Reuters. Other opportunities stemming from a banking license include handling direct deposits of salaries for customers and setting higher deposit limits, Nubank Mexico head Ivan Canales said in an interview. Canales did not provide a timeline for obtaining the license in what is Nubank's second-biggest market after Brazil. Funding for Nubank's expansion plans will come from parent company Nu Holdings (NUN.MX) and deposits made by their customers, said Canales.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “The Exorcist: Believer” spun heads and drove off all foes at the box office. For a sneak peek at what horror fans will be drooling over next, check out the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival (Oct. 12-19), at Nitehawk Cinema’s Williamsburg and Prospect Park locations. It’s established in a lot of these abolitionist countries that there is no death penalty — the government, we don’t kill people for their crimes. The Met and Carnegie Hall plan to present excerpts at Sing Sing on Sept. 28 with DiDonato, Sister Helen as the narrator and inmates as the chorus. There have been 1,575 executions in the U.S. since the Supreme Court allowed the death penalty to be reinstated in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Twenty-four states have death penalty laws, 23 do not and three have governor-imposed moratoriums, the center said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham weren't enough to save “ Expend4bles ” from a debut box office flop. It starred several popular names, including Stallone, Statham, Curtis “50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox and Dolph Lundgren. It's been nearly a decade since the franchise released a film, which opened with $15.8 million and eventually grossed $214 million globally. At the fore is Harry Price, who became chairman in 1938 after investigating paranormal activity at the Borley Rectory in Essex, which he called the “most haunted house in England.” Professing that scientific rigor could legitimize the study of the afterlife, Price debunked lore about a phantom nun on the grounds but claimed to have observed other ghostly goings-on, such as tapping on the windows and servant bells ringing after their wires had been cut. He drew both acclaim and criticism, leaving Dawson to wonder: “Who was Harry Price — a genius or a grifter? A conjurer or a con?”Dawson is less skeptical of the wider cultural appeal of spiritualism. Perhaps she’s right that war, industrialization and the Titanic’s sinking stirred metaphysical yearnings, but after listeners hear offhand mentions of club members’ commitments to colonialism and Christian Zionism — and if they have any outside knowledge of the occult origins of the Third Reich — listeners may wonder if there’s more to the story.
