LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - A new film "Callas - Paris, 1958" is about to transport audiences back to the night 65 years ago when opera legend Maria Callas for the first time dazzled a Paris audience. Celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, as well as then French president René Coty attended the three-hour performance at the Paris Opera. It was also broadcast live on television to more than 30 million people, but until film-maker Tom Volf and his team meticulously restored film reels that had lain forgotten, it had only been seen in black and white. He said the work of his team made the film "as vivid as if it was shot last month". It will be released in cinemas in some 40 countries between November and December in celebration of the centenary of Callas' birth.

Companies Estado de Baja California FollowMEXICO CITY, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Hurricane Norma strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane on Thursday as it neared peak strength over the Pacific, though it was forecast to weaken before reaching the coast of popular tourist resorts on Mexico's Baja California peninsula. "The hurricane is likely near its peak intensity, although some small fluctuations cannot be ruled out today," the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, with Norma still some 245 miles (394 km) away from the port city Manzanillo. The forecaster said Norma would likely begin weakening from Friday through the weekend, and approach land from late Friday. Baja California is home to the Los Cabos beach resorts. In the Atlantic, the NHC forecast tropical storm conditions across parts of the Lesser Antilles from Friday as Tropical Storm Tammy heads west at 15 mph (24 km), nearing the Leeward Islands "at or near hurricane intensity".

☆ Hurricane Norma seen strengthening as it churns toward Baja California

MEXICO CITY, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Hurricane Norma is expected to further strengthen on Wednesday as it bears down on the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, home to popular tourist beach resorts, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). The Miami-based center upgraded Norma to a Category 1 hurricane earlier on Wednesday. "Rapid strengthening is forecast through tonight, and Norma could become a major hurricane on Thursday," the NHC reported, adding that gradual weakening of the hurricane is forecast as it approaches Baja California on Friday and Saturday. Norma's maximum sustained winds have reached 80 miles per hour (129 kph) as it heads north. The hurricane is located about 520 miles (837 km) south of the beach resort city of Cabo San Lucas.

CNN —Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is set to be released from a US prison on Wednesday, officials said. Coronel was sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021 after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering charges related to her husband’s narcotics empire. Coronel was being held at a Residential Reentry Management facility in Long Beach, California, according to the prison bureau’s inmate locator. During her sentencing, Coronel, a dual US-Mexican citizen, expressed deep remorse for her involvement with Guzman and the Sinaloa Cartel and the harm she may have caused. Guzman, who twice escaped from prison in Mexico, is serving a life sentence at Colorado’s Supermax prison after he was convicted in 2019 of engaging in a criminal enterprise, drug trafficking and firearms charges.

Child poverty more than doubled in the U.S. last year after financial assistance that supported families during the earlier days of the Covid pandemic expired, the Census Bureau said Tuesday. The child poverty rate surged to 12.4% in 2022, up from 5.2% in the year prior, according to the bureau's data. The U.S. had made historic gains in fighting child poverty during the pandemic due in large part to the expanded tax credits. The child poverty rate fell 46% in 2021 to the lowest level on record, according to Census data released last year. The overall poverty rate also spiked by nearly 5%, the first increase since 2010, according to the data.
