He met Anthony Bigio, now vice president for design, when Mr. Bigio was designing custom Air Force 1s for clients at Nike’s Mercer Street location. Joe Bavasso, now ALD’s vice president for product, had a job at Todd Snyder but sought out Mr. Santis in hopes that ALD would sponsor his summer basketball team in the Rockaways. A few years ago, Mr. Santis discovered the New Balance 550, a low-top lifestyle sneaker, in an old New Balance catalog and revived it as a collaborative release with ALD. Since then, the 550 has become in “a staple iconic franchise for New Balance,” said Chris Davis, the New Balance chief marketing officer and senior vice president for global merchandising. “It was one of those phenomenons in sneaker culture that only comes around once every few years.”

Nike "takes great pride as a leader in supporting female athletes," the company said. Goucher's book also describes a persistently sexist culture at the Nike Oregon Project and says that Alberto Salazar, a celebrated distance runner and former Nike coach, sexually assaulted her. "My story helped sell shoes, shorts, T-shirts, and bras," Goucher wrote of her time as a Nike-backed runner. "In 2018 we standardized our approach across all sports to support all of our female athletes during pregnancy," Nike said in the statement. We know that Nike can continue to play an elevated role in supporting female athletes and improving their experience in sports."
Nike faces shareholder proposal on human rights

NEW YORK, March 30 (Reuters) - Activist shareholder platform Tulipshare is calling on Nike (NKE.N) to offer more transparency on working conditions in its supply chain. In a shareholder proposal released Thursday, London-based Tulipshare requested a report from Nike on whether its policies effectively address its stated equity goals and human rights commitments. The company’s most recently available impact report from fiscal 2021 cites forced labor, supply chain transparency and labor rights as some of its essential priorities. “Nike did not engage with garment worker unions representing Nike supply chain workers about those impacts, despite the OECD Guidelines’ expectation that multinational enterprises do so and despite unions’ requests for dialogue,” the complaint states. In a fiscal 2022 statement on forced labor, Nike said it is growing its business "through long-term relationships with suppliers that are committed to our strict standards of sustainability and human rights, product excellence and compliance with local laws."

Its challenges include unsold goods it has to shift, an 8% drop in year-on-year sales in China, and falling gross profit margins. Nike is nonetheless in a relatively enviable position. Nike is also sporting a five-year total shareholder return of 105%, where Adidas and Under Armour’s are both negative. Even with blips, that shows it has been a better long-term run for investors. Kanye West blunder puts Adidas in play

After a disastrous breakup with the musician formerly known as Kanye West, the $28 billion sneaker maker is slashing dividends and heading for the first loss in decades. Last year, Adidas spent 12.3% of its 22.5 billion euros of revenue on marketing and similar expenses. If it were to return to the 13.9% it allocated in 2015, it would add 2 billion euros of extra costs over the next five years, Breakingviews calculations show. Swooping on Adidas would allow the U.S. athleisure giant to dominate sportswear by servicing women and men across a wide spectrum of categories. Shares in Adidas were down 2.4% at 144.50 euros by 0859 GMT on March 15.
New York CNN —Calls to boycott Hershey are spreading on Twitter in response to the chocolate company’s International Women’s Day Canadian campaign, which includes a trans woman. It’s the latest example of a brand generating a strong but mixed reaction to a promotional campaign that touches on cultural or societal issues. Fae Johnstone, a queer, trans and feminist activist, posted about being included in the Her for She campaign in a series of tweets on Wednesday. On Thursday, some used #BoycottHersheys to voice their opposition to the campaign — while others used it to criticize the critics. In this campaign, Hershey tapped five women, including Johnstone, who are activists in their fields.

Disney said among Parker’s qualifications as board chair is that he navigated a successful CEO transition at Nike. And Disney’s media networks are struggling as cord cutting accelerates and once lucrative outlets like ESPN lose viewership. She praised Parker for helping lead Disney through a difficult period for the company and the broader media industry.

Nike said Tuesday that revenue on a currency-neutral basis was up 28% in its fiscal second quarter compared with a year ago. Nike not only scored big last quarter, but it also made some great strategic passes. There was a lot to like in Nike’s latest performance: The company said on Tuesday that revenue was up 28% on a currency-neutral basis in its fiscal quarter ended Nov. 30 compared with a year earlier. Impressively, its sales growth is only slightly behind that of Lululemon , which is growing off a revenue base that is just 14% of Nike’s. Net income was flat compared with a year earlier, much better than the 23% decline Wall Street was penciling in.

LOS ANGELES — Convicted criminal and disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti should serve 17½ years in prison after he pleaded guilty to bank fraud and tax offenses in California this year, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. The recommendation was included in a 303-page sentencing memo filed by the U.S. attorney's office for Central California. In the California case, Avenatti admitted pocketing millions of dollars that belonged to clients and lying to them about it, prosecutors said when he pleaded guilty in June. A sentencing memo filed by a lawyer for Avenatti asked for a maximum prison term of three years followed by three years of supervised release. In a separate case, Avenatti was convicted in February 2020 of extortion and other crimes after he threatened to ruin Nike’s reputation unless it agreed to pay him and his client millions of dollars.
