The cuts were pretty targeted and made to "streamline" the company, Command Line reported. Google also cut several hundred employees in its recruiting division last month. The company didn't tell Insider exactly how many roles were affected, but roughly three dozen employees seem to have been cut, Command Line reported. At an all-hands meeting on Wednesday following the layoffs, Google News VP, Shailesh Prakash, said the cuts were made to "streamline" the company, Command Line reported, citing unnamed sources. Sources who heard Prakash's comments also told Command Line that he singled out the increase in employees in Level 8 and Level 9 roles.

Google cuts dozens of jobs in news division

Google cut dozens of jobs in its news division this week, CNBC has learned, downsizing at a particularly sensitive time for online platforms and publishers. An estimated 40 to 45 workers in Google News have lost their jobs, according to an Alphabet Workers Union spokesperson, who didn't know the exact number. A Google spokesperson confirmed the cuts but didn't provide a number, and said there are still hundreds of people working on the news product. The cuts in Google News follow widespread layoffs across many parts of the company this year. In January, Google announced it was cutting 12,000 jobs, affecting roughly 6% of the full-time workforce.

Jeff Smith, CEO and chief investment officer of Starboard Value, L.P., speaks at a panel discussion at the SALT conference in Las Vegas May 14, 2014. Smith's remarks at the 13D Monitor Active Passive Investor Summit came after Reuters revealed last week that Starboard had become a News Corp shareholder, a prelude to a potential shake-up at Murdoch's media empire. "We believe separate news and real estate assets could help unlock $7 billion or more in value," he added. Starboard, which has pushed for changes at companies ranging from Salesforce (CRM.N) to Darden Restaurants <DRI.N,> would struggle to shake up News Corp without Murdoch's consent. If News Corp separates its real estate assets, shareholders would benefit, Smith said.

On Tuesday, Smith called out the valuation discrepancies between the news and real estate businesses. Meanwhile, News Corp.'s real estate assets trade at eight-times, he said. Bloomberg’s Christopher Palmeri and Thomas Buckley reported that Disney has “held exploratory talks” about selling ABC to Nexstar Media Group. The duo also reported that media mogul Byron Allen has also spoken with Disney about a possible deal. “Everyone is freaking the f**k out,” one ABC News staffer bluntly told me about the state of affairs inside the network. Whether a deal to offload ABC and Disney’s linear stations is ultimately in the cards remains to be seen. “I’m ridiculously passionate about news,” Iger told senior company leaders.

New York CNN —Newspaper chain Gannett has paused the use of an artificial intelligence tool to write high school sports dispatches after the technology made several major flubs in articles in at least one of its papers. Several high school sports reports written by an AI service called LedeAI and published by the Columbus Dispatch earlier this month went viral on social media this week — and not in a good way. Many of the reports feature identical language, describing “high school football action,” noting when one team “took victory away from” another and describing “cruise-control” wins. Gannett has paused its experiment with LedeAI in all of its local markets that had been using the service, according to the company. CNET earlier this year also paused an experiment using AI to write stories after it was forced to issue multiple corrections on AI-generated reports.

If newsrooms somehow didn’t comprehend what Fox News really was before that explosive lawsuit, there isn’t an excuse now. Most outlets still haven’t worked up the courage to describe Fox News as a “right-wing channel.” The WaPo on Tuesday didn’t even refer to the outlet’s prime time bloc of Donald Trump propagandists in such terms. It should not be difficult or controversial to describe Fox News as right-wing. The channel has evolved in disturbing ways, having morphed from a traditionally conservative news network into a MAGA propaganda monster. At this point, failing to point out this unsightly reality might just say more about those media outlets than Fox News itself.

CBS News has named Wendy McMahon as its next chief executive, overseeing the news division, its network of stations and its TV syndication arm. Ms. McMahon was previously president of CBS News and its stations, splitting duties with Neeraj Khemlani, who also held that title. Mr. Khemlani stepped down on Sunday, striking a multiyear deal to develop content for the company. George Cheeks, the chief executive of CBS, said in a note to employees on Monday that Ms. McMahon’s appointment was part of a broader reorganization of the division’s national and local news businesses. “I firmly believe that Wendy is the ideal leader for these groups at this critical juncture,” Mr. Cheeks wrote.

During his tenure, Khemlani bolstered CBS News’ reporting ranks, luring prominent journalists such as Robert Costa and Cecilia Vega to the outlet. The cable company Altice USA is said to be weighing a potential sale of Cheddar News, the network once billed as “CNBC for millennials,” less than five years after buying the company. Altice USA has hired Goldman Sachs to help explore strategic alternatives for Cheddar News, according to three people with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. They cautioned that Altice was still weighing its options and could decide against a sale. Representatives for Altice USA and Goldman declined to comment. The complaint wasn’t unusual for Mr. Zucker, 58. He often compares notes on the media business with former colleagues and industry acquaintances, many of whom call him to grouse about the current state of CNN. Mr. Zucker’s criticism may be painful for executives running CNN to hear second- and thirdhand. Last month, CNN hosted a town hall with Mr. Trump in New Hampshire that was criticized for airing false information. Many anchors Mr. Zucker hired or promoted, including Jake Tapper, and Kaitlan Collins, who moderated the town hall, are still in prominent spots in CNN’s lineup.
