CNN —A group of New York Democrats announced support for federal legislation aimed at regulating lithium-ion battery safety standards after a spate of fires caused by the batteries malfunctioning or overheating. Lithium-ion batteries, found in many popular consumer products like e-scooters and smartphones, have been under scrutiny amid increasing reports of explosive fires triggered by the batteries, which use flammable materials. The incident followed a Manhattan apartment building fire in November that injured at least 38 people and was blamed on a lithium-ion battery connected to a micromobility device. The new lithium-ion battery safety bill was announced last month by Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-NY, who said the legislation would save lives and protect property. Torres said the latest fire is another reminder “of the escalating threat lithium-ion batteries poses to the public’s safety,” according to a news release.
New York CNN —Democratic lawmakers sent letters to 14 of the largest depositors at Silicon Valley Bank, seeking details about the lender’s “unusually cozy” relationships with its well-heeled clients. Silicon Valley Bank was known to cater to the tech startup world. But Warren and Ocasio-Cortez, citing media reports, raised concerns about whether the bank’s relationships went beyond industry standards and potentially hastened its collapse last month. SVB reportedly provided lower-interest-rate mortgages for tech start-up founders whom other banks wouldn’t lend to, according to the New York Times, while sponsoring industry ski trips, conferences, and fancy dinners, the lawmakers wrote. “Silicon Valley Bank’s unusually cozy relationship with its clients increased the threat of contagion when the bank went under,” said Senator Warren in a statement.

Mandatory Credit: Scott Taetsch-USA TODAY SportsNEW YORK, March 28 (Reuters) - The New York Yankees hope to harness Aaron Judge's cult of celebrity to their advantage as the new season kicks off on Thursday following a record-breaking performance last year from the American League MVP. Judge smashed his 62nd home run in October, vaulting himself into the pantheon of Yankees greats as he broke Roger Maris' American League single-season record that had remained untouched since 1961. Try to find a couple things throughout the season that I wanted to improve on," Judge told the YES network. The Yankees kick off their season at home against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
Kelly, 56, the Grammy-winning R&B artist, has been convicted in two separate trials of luring multiple underage girls into sex by leveraging his wealth and fame, in some case recording the abuse on video. Prosecutors have argued in a sentencing memo that Kelly is so incorrigible that "the only way to ensure Kelly does not reoffend is to impose a sentence that will keep him in prison for the rest of his life." Defense attorneys say a 56-year-old African American man with diabetes is already facing an effective life sentence with the existing 30-year term. "There was a whole culture around it and so yes I do think there's a disproportionate attention on Mr. Kelly," Bonjean said in a telephone interview. Kelly will not address the judge, Bonjean said, because he still faces prosecution in other jurisdictions and any statement could be used against him.
Starbucks' interim CEO Howard Schultz said unions have no place at the company in a CNN interview. He said that unionization efforts reflect a "much bigger problem" beyond individual companies. Schultz, who stepped in as interim CEO of Starbucks in April 2022, told Harlow: "I don't think a union has a place in Starbucks." Schultz argued that Starbucks worker unionization efforts in America are reflective of a much bigger macro problem beyond the company itself. Unionization efforts from Starbucks workers began in Buffalo, New York in 2021 as workers grew tired of stores being consistently understaffed, poor working conditions during the pandemic, as well a demand for higher wages.
Justice Hector LaSalle would have been the first Latino to lead New York’s court system . Kathy Hochul ’s nominee to lead the state court system was again rejected by her fellow Democrats in the state Senate during a Wednesday floor vote, ending a weekslong procedural standoff. Justice Hector LaSalle’s nomination to be chief judge of the Court of Appeals was voted down by the Democratic-controlled chamber, 20 in favor to 39 opposed. Most Democrats voted against Justice LaSalle, who currently runs a midlevel appeals court based in Brooklyn, while most Republicans were in favor.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermidNEW YORK, Feb 15 (Reuters) - New York's state Senate on Wednesday rejected Governor Kathy Hochul's choice to become the state's highest-ranking judge, a defeat for the state's top Democrat who failed to overcome opposition from her own party to the nomination. Hochul's choice, Hector LaSalle, is the presiding justice of a midlevel state appeals court in Brooklyn, and would have been the first Hispanic chief judge of the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. Many had hoped Hochul would replace former Chief Judge Janet DiFiore with a more liberal judge. "But it was not a vote on the merits of Justice LaSalle, who is an overwhelmingly qualified and talented jurist.

Tesla Inc. workers in Buffalo, N.Y., want to form a union. A group of Tesla employees in upstate New York sent a letter to management Tuesday morning announcing their plans to launch a unionization campaign. The group of employees, called Tesla Workers United, say forming a union would allow them to negotiate a contract to address health and safety conditions on the job, wages and benefits, among other issues.
The New York Times reports NYU Langone gave "VIPs" like donors and trustees preferential treatment. NYU Langone broadly denied the claims in a statement to Insider. Langone told the Times that he never asked for or was offered special treatment. Ambulance workers who brought these patients to NYU Langone were sometimes pressured to take them elsewhere, the report says. New York Senator Chuck Schumer once went into Room 20 with his wife, who was experiencing shortness of breath, the Times reported.
CNN —House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s official portrait was unveiled in a ceremony Wednesday at the US Capitol, with speeches from old allies and political sparring-mates who reminisced on her historic tenure. The painting, which depicts Pelosi standing before the speaker’s chair in the House chamber and holding a gavel, will hang in the Speaker’s Lobby just off the House floor. Leaders lead, Madame Speaker, and you Madame Speaker, have led,” he said. The announcement came just weeks after her husband, Paul, was violently attacked in the couple’s San Francisco home. Jeffries, 52, will represent a generational change from the current triumvirate of House Democratic leaders, who are three decades older than him.
Sinema’s interests are no longer necessarily the Democrats’ best interests in the next Congress, and the 2024 Senate map became even more complicated for Democrats with Sinema’s decision. The Democrats who run against independent Sen. Angus King in Maine have not gained traction in recent elections. Having two people in the race who are going to caucus with the Democratic Party likely makes it more difficult for the Democrats to win. All that said, the Democrats already have a difficult map heading into 2024. With Sinema’s break from the Democratic party, the road is, if nothing else, curvier for Democrats.
