Babies who nap more frequently might have a smaller vocabulary and lower cognitive skills, according to a new study published in the medical journal JCPP Advances. But our research shows that how frequently a child naps reflects their individual cognitive need." Some babies are more efficient at consolidating information while they sleep, therefore need to sleep less. This doesn't mean you should limit how much your child naps in hopes of widening their vocabulary, she says. Let your child naps as much as they need.

European earnings add weight to economic bear case

LONDON, July 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - It’s only early in the financial-reporting season for European companies. But macro bears will already be able to find all the doom and gloom they could ever want. But pricey recipe kits and premium toilet paper are relatively easy ways for pinched consumers to save money. Before the results, all three companies were priced at a premium to the STOXX Europe 600 Index (.STOXX) using 12-month forward price to earnings multiples, suggesting possible shareholder complacency. Daytime naps may be good for our brains, study says
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Taking daytime naps may help maintain brain health as we age, according to a new study. The results show “a small but significant increase in brain volume in people who have a genetic signature associated with taking daytime naps,” she told the Science Media Centre. “Even with those limitations, this study is interesting because it adds to the data indicating that sleep is important for brain health,” she said. MoMo Productions/Digital Vision/Getty ImagesHowever, such a technique can only show an association between nap and brain health, not cause and effect. Ryan Collerd | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesArtificial intelligence is likely to shake up the transportation industry — transforming how supply chains are managed and reducing the number of jobs carried out by people, according to analysts and industry insiders. Sidewalk robots, self-driving trucks and customer service bots are on their way, along with generative AI that can predict disruptions or explain why sales forecasts may have been missed, according to industry executives. "AI may be able to totally (or nearly) remove all human touchpoints in the supply chain including 'back office' tasks," Morgan Stanley 's analysts led by Ravi Shanker stated in a research note last month. AI is the latest one of these potentially transformative technologies to emerge – and perhaps the most powerful to-date," the analysts added. This is a theme picked up by analysts at investment firm Jefferies, who made multiple predictions about the effect that generative AI will have on transportation and logistics.

Australia will be eager to tighten their grip on the match as they lead India by 196 runs, with Usman Khawaja batting on 13 along with Marnus Labuschagne on eight. While Thakur lived dangerously, Rahane went about rescuing India's hopes with his mix of delectable shot selection in the 109-run partnership for the seventh wicket. While he fell 11 runs short of scoring a century in the second over after lunch, the 35-year-old crossed 5000 test runs during his 129-ball knock which included 11 fours and a six. Following Rahane's departure, Thakur steered India past the follow-on target before bringing up his 50 with a sumptuous four. Blinking rapidly, he hurriedly grabbed his bat to make his way to the crease and made sure Australia reached tea without losing any further wickets.

Stroke risk is typically higher in older adults with more health problems, the study noted. After controlling for other factors that contribute to stroke risk, researchers found people with five to eight symptoms of insomnia had a 51% increased risk of stroke compared with people who did not have insomnia, according to a statement on the study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology. In comparison, people who had one to four symptoms had a 16% increased risk of stroke compared with people with no symptoms of insomnia, the study found. Getting more than nine hours of sleep on average was linked with a twofold increase in stroke risk. However, taking a planned nap of less than an hour was not associated with an increased stroke risk, the study said.

Is This Octopus Having a Nightmare?

Costello the octopus was napping while stuck to the glass of his tank at the Rockefeller University in New York. A minute later, Costello scuttled along the glass toward his tank’s sandy bottom, curling his arms over his body. “This was not a normal octopus behavior,” said Dr. Ramos, who is now at the University of Vermont. Perhaps Costello was having a nightmare, he and a team of researchers speculated. They shared this idea and other possible explanations in a study uploaded this month to the bioRxiv website.

Russians angry at downing of Ukrainian drone over their homes
  + stars: | 2023-03-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
People were wounded," said Kireyevsk resident Elena, 35, who like some others declined to give her surname. Russia's Defence Ministry said on Sunday it had electronically disabled a Ukrainian drone, which veered off course and crashed onto Kireyevsk, a town of about 25,000 inhabitants 220 km (140 miles) south of Moscow. The state-run news agency TASS quoted local officials on Sunday as saying three people had been hurt, none seriously. Now we know how it is," said Yuri Ovchinnikov, who was home with his wife at the moment of impact. "I graduated from an aviation academy; my specialisation was aircraft control systems, so I know how it works.
But it's important to know that there is a right and wrong way to nap, especially if you're trying to avoid messing up your sleep schedule. And that's simply too long, says Shelby Harris, licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in behavioral sleep medicine. "If you take an hour-long nap, sometimes you end up waking up feeling more groggy from it because you're getting into deeper stages of sleep," Harris tells CNBC Make It. If you're aiming to feel more energized after napping, the sweet spot is from 20 minutes to a half hour, Harris says. Also, consider the time of day which is extremely important to avoid impacting your sleep in the evening, she adds.
By September, the tally of lost and captured Russian tanks reached 1,000 — more than all the tanks in the British, French, German, and Finnish militaries combined. The first time these British tanks found a fight, only 25 of the 49 of them actually moved when ordered to commence the attack. Nonetheless, before the conflict was over, Churchill himself would decide tanks had, once again, run their course, declaring, "we have too much armor — tanks are finished." And that is the real lesson we can glean from the performance of Russian tanks in Ukraine over the past year. Maxim Shemetov/ReutersThis point becomes evident when you look at Russian tank losses recorded by the Oryx Blog between February and April 2022, when Russian tank losses were at their absolute worst.
Arsenal thrash Everton to go five points clear
  + stars: | 2023-03-01 | by ( Martyn Herman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Everton, who now have only one victory from their last 27 league visits to Arsenal, had actually looked capable of taking something from the game. They remained third from bottom with 21 points having played a game more than all the teams around them. While Everton are haunted by the looming prospect of a first relegation from the Premier League, Arsenal are beginning to envisage a first title since 2004, although they still have to visit Manchester City in April. Everton stunned Arsenal 1-0 in Sean Dyche's first game in charge in early February and for 40 minutes they did an extremely effective job at nullifying them again. Everton's Idrissa Gueye gifted Arsenal a second on the stroke of halftime.
Since going viral on social media, the company has generated over $1 million in revenue, according to ABC7. Videos on Plufl's official TikTok account have garnered several million views and comments from users who are intrigued by the human-sized dog bed. I'll just get an actual dog bed," one user wrote. Plufl met the skepticism with their reasons for the pricing, noting the product is more than just a large dog bed. Amid the online success, Silverman and Kinoshita appeared on "Shark Tank" in October 2022 where they secured a $200,000 deal from Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner.
Abandoned shopping carts are a scourge to neighborhoods, as wayward carts block intersections, sidewalks and bus stops. There is no national data on shopping cart losses, but US retailers lose an estimated tens of millions of dollars every year replacing lost and damaged carts, say shopping cart experts. They pay vendors to rescue stray carts and fork over fines to municipalities for violating laws on shopping carts. “It is the shopping cart.” Another New York Times article in 1957 called the trend “Cart-Napping.”There’s even a book, “The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America: A Guide to Field Identification,” dedicated to the phenomenon and a system of identification for stray shopping carts, much like guides for bird-watching. Coin-lock shopping cart systems are popular in Europe, and Poulos said more US companies are requesting coin-lock systems in response to the costs of runaway shopping carts.
Researchers proposed it takes 4 days of quality sleep to recover from just 1 hour of sleep debt. Why it's hard to catch up on sleepPsychiatrist and sleep medicine expert, Dr. Alex Dimitriu, is of the mindset that you can catch up on sleep, but only if you haven't let your sleep debt grow too great. By definition, one hour of sleep lost equals one hour of sleep debt. "If the sleep debt is greater, the time to recover becomes markedly longer, and complete recovery may not be possible, so it's important to not let sleep debt go too far," Dimitriu, founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine, told Insider. How to pay back sleep debtPaying back sleep debt is like paying back credit card debt: Try to pay all, or as much, of the total balance so that the debt doesn't grow too large.
She was 11, about his age, and both had little sisters who sold Girl Scout cookies and were adorable sprites who also drove them batty. They were at an age when little sisters could get in the way, no matter how cute they looked in a Girl Scout sash. Sadie could unload Girl Scout cookies as if she were giving away gold — she sold 1,400 boxes in 2022. And why was Sadie selling all those Girl Scout cookies? Their moms would bring them each to New York, along with their little sisters, in June.

When Ali Kahlert was diagnosed with a kidney infection last month, she gratefully accepted an IV at urgent care and dutifully swallowed antibiotics as prescribed. It was the last bit of the doctor’s orders that threw her for a loop: rest. I need to do something,” says the 30-year-old graduate student in Minneapolis. After one day on the couch—napping, sewing, watching YouTube videos—she’d had it. She climbed the stairs to her home office and tackled some school work and chores, until a stabbing pain of protest came from her kidney.
