In today's big story, we're looking at the push for WFH Fridays and how that plays into the "quiet vacationing" phenomenon . The big storyAnti-office FridaysHector Roquet Rivero/Getty Images; Jenny Chang-Rodriguez/BIWith all due respect to summer Fridays, we've found a year-round replacement: WFH Fridays. But WFH Fridays' staying power remains to be seen. Which brings us back to WFH Fridays. The end result could be employers saying abuse of WFH Fridays means they need you back in the office… for good.

The first thing to know about The Portal is that you will feel a strange, overwhelming urge to take out your phone and gaze at it through your phone's screen. Isn't it more interesting to try to interact with those people instead of staring at them through your phone? It feels almost protective — like The Portal is a light so bright you have to view it only through a phone screen, like looking at a solar eclipse through a hole in a cereal box. The Dublin Portal had a bigger crowd than the one in NYC. The Portal in New York is right on 23rd and Broadway, near some seating and a coffee stand.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. The conversation I moderated was on "Big (Geospatial) Data & AI," with the goal of exploring how the two rapidly evolving worlds of satellite data collection and artificial intelligence interact. Simply put, Project Maven at NGA is working on how AI can use satellite imagery and data to detect objects and activities around the world. "As the volume of that data grows, it is beyond the capacity of the human mind to be able to derive any kind of useful understanding from that kind of data," Martin said. And more change is coming: The next step in the evolution of geospatial data and AI, from her view, is applying generative AI "to basically arm non-experts with the ability to expertly use geospatial data."

Count Baked by Melissa founder Melissa Ben-Ishay among the entrepreneurial success stories founded on getting out of the corporate rat race. Before starting her company, Ben-Ishay worked at an ad agency in New York City – a role she felt unfulfilled in. At the time, every cupcake came from her tiny New York City apartment kitchen. The cafe owner became a shareholder in Baked by Melissa, and the company was able to continue using the space for years. A year after it moved into the Cafe Bari space, Baked by Melissa opened its second location in Union Square.

Shake Shack has nearly 350 locations in the U.S. and another 134 around the world and is valued at more than $4 billion. With dozens of new locations opening later this year, the team in the Innovation Kitchen is constantly developing new offerings. In order for a menu item to reach customers, it needs to be approved by Shake Shack's 13-person tasting panel. How delicious an item is is only one of the factors that the Innovation Kitchen team thinks about when developing new recipes. Shake Shack's latest limited time offering — a barbeque inspired menu — was months in the making.

Things are so bad that even tech workers, who make some of the highest salaries of any profession, are feeling the crunch. Entry-level tech workers made an average of $75,262 in 2023, and could only afford 2.1% of studio and one-bedroom rental apartments in the city, StreetEasy found. "If these tech employees can't afford housing, then who can?" But even as New York City has created 800,000 new jobs in the last 10 years, it's only built 200,000 new homes. The average tech worker makes 52% more per year than the average worker in New York City, the StreetEasy report noted.

I took a first-class train trip on an Amtrak Acela for the first time in 2022. Some things surprised me about the cabin, like the abundance of drink options yet limited food. From booking my ticket to taking the journey, several things surprised me about the two-and-a-half-hour trip, and I ultimately thought the perks weren't worth the higher price tag.

But Nkenge's dream became a reality when she was selected for a one-bedroom apartment through the city's housing lottery in 2023. The New York City housing lottery program helps residents find affordable housing, including rent-stabilized apartments. The Department of Housing Preservation and Development defines affordable housing as housing costs no greater than 30 percent of a single person's or family's income. Nkenge applied to the NYC housing lottery for three years before she got her one-bedroom apartment in Flatiron. The 106-square-foot home made smarter use of space than any tiny home I've seen in the US. It had a unique cylindrical shape and was less than half the size of the US tiny homes I've booked. In 2016, I was offered a role as a director of product design at a New York tech startup called UpTop. I worked at three other companies in Ukraine before moving to the US, doing UX and product design. In the US, I feel that big companies are developing original ideas and patents, while in Ukraine, the biggest tech companies provide consultancy services. As a product design director at UpTop, I could choose which features to research and test and decide how a certain feature would be implemented.

CNN —Hollywood actor Steve Buscemi has been treated for injuries after being punched in the face while walking in New York City. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) told CNN it is investigating the assault, which took place on Wednesday and is the latest in a string of random attacks in the city. Last month, CNN spoke to half a dozen women who said they were hit in the face out of nowhere while on the streets of New York City. “He is ok and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of NY,” the statement said. “Upon arrival, officers were informed a 66-year-old male was punched in the face by an unidentified individual,” the police statement said.
