We agree wholeheartedly, having cheered Nvidia's software push for nearly a year . Software and services "Nvidia's business is evolving faster ... and software sales can help smooth out volatility," Melius analysts argued. In December, analysts at Piper Sandler also struck a bullish tone on Nvidia's software opportunity. The core of Nvidia's software strategy is DGX Cloud, an AI supercomputer accessible through a web browser, that the company rolled out in March 2023. The differentiated aspect of the DGX Cloud is it also has additional AI software and tools, such as pre-trained models, data libraries and access to Nvidia service representatives.

AMD and Nvidia hit all-time highs on Thursday as investors continue to clamor for shares of the companies building chips that power artificial intelligence. AMD shares rose over 1% during trading on Thursday to reach its highest-ever closing price, $162.67, while Nvidia, rose just under 2% to $571.07. Both companies have notched double-digit percentage gains to start the year after an explosive 2023 in which AMD shares popped 127.6% and Nvidia stock rocketed 238.8%. Analysts also see AMD improving its AI software, eliminating one major reason why Nvidia chips were preferred over AMD's. On Thursday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company , which manufactures Nvidia and AMD chips, reported better-than-expected sales.

Wall Street expects Nvidia (NVDA) to deliver another strong quarterly report Tuesday, as its cutting-edge artificial intelligence chips remain a hot, hard-to-get commodity. The recent trading in Nvidia's stock reflects that optimism, with shares up nearly 20% in November alone. "I don't like the so-called setup," Jim Cramer said, referring to the huge run-up in shares ahead of earnings. It's one piece of evidence behind investors' belief that Nvidia's upcoming earnings report will clear the high bar that's been set. Tyrone Siu | ReutersBEIJING — U.S. chipmaking giant Nvidia has reportedly found a way to sell high-end chips to Chinese companies — while remaining compliant with U.S. rules aimed at curbing China's access to the tech. Nvidia is set to deliver three new chips to domestic manufacturers in the coming days, Chinese financial media Cailian Press said Thursday, citing sources. The chips — called HGX H20, L20 PCle and L2 PCle — are based on Nvidia's H100 chip, the report said. Nvidia said in a September 2022 filing the U.S. government would still allow it to develop the H100 in China. In the near term, Chinese manufacturers have no better option and they will continue to buy Nvidia's chips, while searching for replacements.

Surging bond yields and mixed earnings reports have weighed on the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks, which are collectively down an average of about 15% from their 52-week highs, though they all still sit on hefty gains for the year. The stocks now trade at an average forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 30 times compared with 45 times in mid-June. I actually think the Magnificent Seven will hold up better,” said King Lip, chief strategist at Baker Avenue Wealth Management. Because the Magnificent Seven have a combined weighting of 28% in the S&P 500, their performance holds a large sway over the broader index. Lip said his firm owns shares of all seven companies and has recently added to its holdings in some of them.

Morning Bid: Big Tech reports as bond yields recoil

The two tech giants report after the bell on Tuesday, with Meta (META.O) following on Wednesday and Amazon (AMZN.O) on Thursday. Partly lifted by the year's artificial intelligence craze, the tech behemoths have clearly flattered year-to-date gains of 10% in the overall S&P500. And yet the seemingly endless squeeze in bond markets since midyear has seen megacap indexes (.NYFANG) retreat some 12% from their highs for the year. The upshot of the whole picture is to give U.S. stock futures a lift ahead of the open on Tuesday - with Asia and European bourses in positive territory too as bond markets stabilised. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields held about 4.83% - some 19 basis points below Monday's peak at 5.02%.

The company commands a dominant position in the market for chips used in AI model training. But the question that still lingers in our minds is whether that growth can be substantial enough to meet the lofty, multiyear expectations that became baked into Nvidia's stock price in recent months. Based on the Reuters report, the potential boost to revenue wouldn't arrive for more than a year, and it's unclear what Nvidia's market share would look like then. Another reason for tempered enthusiasm: The gross margins on PC CPUs are typically smaller than Nvidia's data-center chips, a market in which the company has pricing power. Bottom line Nvidia's potential foray in PC CPUs is a development that we'll continue to monitor, but it doesn't put to rest longer-term questions around China.

But, like us, Wall Street analysts have not waivered in their buy recommendations on Nvidia, despite acknowledging the semiconductor giant's opportunity in China may be diminished long term. Morgan Stanley left its Nvidia earnings estimates unchanged but adjusted the premium it expects investors to pay for those future earnings. All three firms maintained buy-equivalent ratings on Nvidia stock. The tougher export rules announced Tuesday specifically hit a pair of Nvidia AI chips designed to comply with Washington's initial restrictions last year. The A800 and H800 have slower data-transfer speeds than the cutting-edge AI chips Nvidia sells to U.S. technology firms, such as fellow Club holdings Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL).

The behind-the-scenes details on the IPO pricing decision are based on interviews with three people familiar with the discussions. Together with other previously unreported deliberations, they shed new light on why SoftBank took a conservative approach in valuing Arm in the IPO. SoftBank, which had owned 75% of Arm, agreed to buy the remaining 25% from its $100 billion Vision Fund at a $64 billion valuation last month. Representatives for Arm, SoftBank, PIF, Mubadala and Raine either declined to comment or did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Yet even with this lower valuation, SoftBank fares better than its $40 billion deal to sell Arm to Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), which it abandoned last year amid opposition from antitrust regulators. Arm priced its IPO at $51 per share, at the top of its indicated range, raising $4.87 billion for SoftBank based on 95.5 million shares sold, the company said on Wednesday. Weak mobile demand during a global economic slowdown has caused Arm's revenue to stagnate. Sales in China contributed 24.5% of Arm's $2.68 billion revenue in fiscal 2023.

Arm may price its IPO above the indicated price range and will decide on how much it will sell its shares for on Wednesday, that source and a second person with knowledge of the matter said. Arm was considering publishing a revised price range that would have been higher, reflecting the strong investor demand. Pricing the approximately $5 billion IPO conservatively raises the chances of the shares trading strongly at their debut on Thursday, the sources added. The valuation that Arm has been seeking thus far represents a climb-down from the $64 billion valuation at which SoftBank last month acquired the 25% stake it did not already own in the company from the $100 billion Vision Fund it manages. Sales in China contributed 24.5% of Arm's $2.68 billion revenue in fiscal 2023.
