The electric vehicle industry is seeing cutthroat competition between investor favorite Tesla and several Chinese automakers like BYD . "While Tesla grabs all the headlines, we don't necessarily think that it's going to be the electric vehicle manufacturers that do the best. Morningstar gives stocks a rating of between one and five stars, with a top rating indicating that the shares are undervalued. Chinese stocks had an eventful week last week — with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index hitting a five-year low of about 2,650 points on Feb. 5, before edging up to end the week at 2,865.90. A slide in Hong Kong-listed Chinese shares on Feb. 9, however, proved that investors may still have lingering concerns on the prospects of Chinese stocks in the new year. As the festive season gets underway, Redmond Wong, market strategist at investment firm Saxo, sees several opportunities to play the market. Boom in green transformation Beyond the traditional sectors, Saxo's Wong is watching an up-and-coming area in China: energy security and a green transformation. Data from the International Energy Agency shows that the Asian giant's clean-energy sectors contributed 11.4 trillion Chinese yuan ($1.6 trillion) to the Chinese economy in 2023, up 30% year-on-year.

"The Magnificent Seven stocks generally are starting to run out of steam at this point because their valuations are getting pretty full at this point of time," Morningstar's Chief Markets Strategist David Sekera told CNBC Pro on Feb. 2. However, Sekera thinks things are looking up for small-caps and value stocks — the latter of which he says are trading at an 11% discount relative to Morningstar's fair value and look like a "good area for investors to overweight in U.S. stocks right now." Tech stocks The chief strategist remains bullish on tech, albeit outside of the Magnificent Seven, and named Cognizant Technology Solutions and Snowflake as picks to play the theme. Value in energy The energy sector — one of the laggards of the stock market last year — is also on Sekera's radar. Morningstar gives stocks a rating of between one and five stars, with a top rating indicating that the shares are undervalued.

That could be a sign that workers feel less confident about the state of the labor market. AdvertisementFriday's blowout jobs report confirmed the labor market is still holding firm, but one often-ignored statistic could signal a looming slowdown. "The second straight 2.2% quits rate — just below the pre-Covid level — is more important, because it clearly signals slower wage gains." "All that air is coming out of the labor market, even though hiring remains strong." "The job market is steadily returning to its pre-pandemic self," Morningstar's Preston Caldwell said in a research note.

In a sea of income-generating exchange-traded funds, BlackRock 's actively managed Flexible Income ETF (BINC) seeks to stand out with a multisector approach that balances high quality and high yield. "The way we built this portfolio is marrying high yield, investment-grade credit, agency mortgages and securitized [products]," Rieder said in an interview. Rieder said he's investing more in European high yield these days because of the strong U.S. dollar. "That is really attractive — and European high yield is cheaper than U.S.," he said. In U.S. high yield, single-B-rated debt is the most attractive, the investor said.

The Federal Reserve's monetary policy set the tone for the fixed income world in 2023 – right down to which exchange traded funds investors picked to take advantage of higher interest rates. Bond yields have an inverse relationship to their prices, so that when prices decline, yields rise and vice versa. The Vanguard Long-Term Treasury ETF (VGLT) was another favorite of investors, with about $7.3 billion in net flows in 2023. Indeed, those strategies proved popular with investors in 2023, as the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) and iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) were ETFs with the second and third highest net flows, per Morningstar.

With interest rates expected to come down in 2024, real estate — a sector beloved for its steady income payments — could see upside in the new year. "When rates are low, a lot of income-oriented investors see that REIT dividend as very attractive, and they are willing to take the risks associated with equity investment to have this dividend payment." Jefferies is neutral on the office REIT sector but has raised its rating on Boston Properties to buy from hold. The senior housing occupancy rate was 84.4% in the third quarter of 2023, according to the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care . That's up more than 6 percentage points from the pandemic low of 77.8%, but it's still off from the pre-pandemic occupancy rate of 87.1%.

"That's why having that exposure to investment grade corporate bonds … at this point in the cycle is a tremendous value," he added. Meanwhile, the assets in the fund that are high yield are what Narayanan calls high quality, "mispriced securities." That's a far-cry from where many Wall Street pros thought stocks would end the year. Others, like analysts at Bank of America, BMO, and Deutsche Bank believe the market could roar to new all-time highs . Rather than try to guess where the market is heading next, investors would be better off finding high-quality stocks to invest in for the long run. Thankfully, Morningstar's Margaret Giles recently compiled a list of the stocks to buy now, drawn from analysts' larger collection of the best companies to own. These stocks have "predictable cash flows and are run by management teams that have a history of making smart capital-allocation decisions," she wrote.

Not every corner of the plant-based food industry has been burned. After the boom-and-bust cycle of Beyond Meat stock, analysts have wondered what comes next for the plant-based food space. The alternative protein market Beyond Meat's struggles have left some skeptical about which companies have what it takes to meet the needs of consumers who want to avoid animal-based products for health or environmental reasons. After topping $230 per share at its highest point, Beyond Meat stock now trades below $7. There's a business argument beyond the alternative protein market that can bode well when forecasting demand, Morningstar's Goldstein said.

After being on the market for more than a decade, defined maturity bond funds are finally attracting attention. Traditional open end, bond mutual funds or bond ETFs, on the other hand, have no maturity date. One big advantage over owning individual bonds, however, is that defined maturity ETFs are easy to purchase on the stock exchange. How they work Each defined maturity bond fund holds securities in the same sector that come due in the calendar year chosen for the fund. Callable bonds are simply those that can be redeemed or paid off by the issuer prior to the bonds' maturity date, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Wall Street is set to wrap up a strong month next week as stocks gun for new highs heading into year end. The Nasdaq Composite is on pace to close out the month with a double-digit advance, up 10%. The best opportunities today are in value stocks, meaning names trading at about a 22% discount to fair value, he said. Morningstar estimates fair value based on its projection of a company's future cash flows and the predictability of those flows. In fact, year-to-date, many utilities stocks have fallen by more than even long-dated bonds. What's great about utilities stocks is that they are very steady because demand for electricity is inelastic. Morningstar just published its Q4 Markets Observer note. The firm highlighted cities where home prices are rising and falling the most. Many high-flying markets that saw massive relative appreciation in the pandemic era are now cooling off in a big way, while those that saw more tepid gains are still plugging along. In Morningstar's Q4 Markets Observer note published this week, the firm used National Association of Realtors data to highlight cities in the US seeing the highest appreciation right now, as well as those where prices are falling the fastest. They found that more affordable markets are performing better from Q2 2022 to Q2 2023.

BlackRock's Rick Rieder said this week that while the economy is slowing, he believes it can rebound. "I call the U.S. economy, the polyurethane economy because it flexes, adjusts like a Tempur-Pedic bed. It can take some pretty significant shots, and it just rebounds," Rieder told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. Rieder, who also oversees BlackRock's Global Allocation team, thinks that people are still going to buy equities despite the current demand for Treasury bonds. I don't think so, but I think equities will do their job.
