Election Updates: Trump rallies in Las Vegas.

Republicans defended Mr. Trump against what they insisted was an unfair trial in New York. Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat and co-chairman of Mr. Biden’s re-election campaign, opposed asylum restrictions when Mr. Trump enacted them. “Former President Trump actually wants a problem to solve through his election rather than a solution that a bipartisan group of senators stood behind,” he said. President Trump is simply making a political issue of this.”Whitmer said contraception was “very much at risk” under Republicans. Vance of Ohio, another possible running mate to Mr. Trump, criticized Mr. Biden for his trip to Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and for an ad from his campaign that featured veterans denouncing Mr. Trump.

The Texas flag is seen before the game between the Houston Cougars and the Texas Longhorns at TDECU Stadium on Oct. 21, 2023 in Houston. BlackRock and Citadel Securities are among investors backing a group seeking to start a new national stock exchange in Texas. "Texas's booming economy and the strong economic and population growth among states in the southeast quadrant of the U.S. present incredible opportunities for businesses — and ultimately the Texas Stock Exchange," TXSE CEO James Lee said on LinkedIn. TXSE's website said it will be a "fully electronic, national securities exchange that will seek registration with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission." The Dallas Morning News reported TXSE will target companies in the "southeastern quadrant of the U.S." In an interview with the newspaper, Lee thanked Texas Gov.

Opinion | Mixed News About Opioid Overdoses
  + stars: | 2024-06-01 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Preliminary federal data that reports a slight drop in annual opioid overdose deaths offers a small measure of hope. But it’s no cause for celebration, despite what The Morning newsletter (“Has Fentanyl Peaked?,” nytimes.com, May 21) appears to suggest. In 2023, law enforcement seized over 115 million pills that contained illicit fentanyl. The omnipresence of high-potency fentanyl and other synthetic opioids in our drug supply continues to drive unprecedented instances of drug poisoning in communities across the country. That’s why focusing intently on prevention and encouraging robust conversations with loved ones about the dangers of the drug supply remain key.
This time, officials were unveiling plaques designating the former Rio Vista Bracero Reception Center in Socorro, Texas, as a National Historic Landmark. While the bracero program provided a legal pathway for guest workers, crackdowns on illegal immigration were also common during that period. Why Rio Vista is so significant – and rareThe Rio Vista site, a key hub for the program, is about a 30-minute drive from El Paso, Texas. Before its role in the bracero program, the area known as Rio Vista Farm was a poor farm and an orphanage. All of this went through Corral’s mind as he revisited Rio Vista on May 11.

“Sounds like something I would say,” responded Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and fixer. The question set the tone for the cross-examination of the Manhattan district attorney’s key witness in the hush money trial against the former president. For roughly two hours, Blanche began a cross-examination to try to discredit Cohen’s allegations against Trump. Blanche then asked whether Cohen called Trump a “Cheeto-dusted cartoon villain.”“That also sounds like something that I said,” Cohen said. “You were telling the truth, correct?” Blanche asked in regards to the compliments Cohen gave Trump.

Gazan journalists told CNN they are haunted by their colleagues’ deaths, as they balance the emotional labor of covering the war with trying to protect their families. Israel launched a military assault on Gaza on October 7 after the militant group Hamas, which governs Gaza, killed at least 1,200 people in Israel and abducted more than 250 others. After nearly seven months of war, Abu Dagga told CNN that she, too, wants to leave. The photojournalist for Turkish state broadcaster TRT told CNN he had been traveling through the neighborhood, after being displaced from the local refugee camp. We hope that God will bring him back to us safely.”Whether they report from within the enclave, or elsewhere, Palestinian journalists told CNN they could not turn away from the horrors unfolding in Gaza.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said on Wednesday that she would demand a vote next week on a motion to remove Speaker Mike Johnson, moving forward in the face of all but certain defeat with a second attempt during this Congress to depose a Republican speaker. In a morning news conference at the Capitol, Ms. Greene excoriated Mr. Johnson for working with Democrats to push through major legislation and said it was time for lawmakers to go on the record about where they stood on his speakership. “I think every member of Congress needs to take that vote and let the chips fall where they may,” Ms. Greene said. “And so next week, I am going to be calling this motion to vacate.”The move comes just over a week after Mr. Johnson pushed through a long-stalled $95 billion package to aid Israel, Ukraine and other U.S. allies over the objections of Ms. Greene and other right-wing Republicans who staunchly opposed sending additional aid to Kyiv.

The Israeli strike on a military base near the Iranian city of Isfahan was part of a cycle of retaliation that has alarmed world leaders, but it produced a largely muted response from both on Friday. Television networks and some officials in both countries played down the significance of the strike, which Israeli and Iranian officials confirmed. In Israel, officials described the strike as a limited response designed to avoid escalating tensions. Pundits on the country’s morning news shows said the strike did not appear to cause significant damage to military sites in Iran. In one video that was widely shared online Friday, a girl throws a paper airplane at an apartment building and compares it to the Israeli strike, giggling as the folded paper hits the concrete structure.

I was a senior in college in 1978 when I wrote my first opinion piece that touched on airline deregulation. It was an editorial in The Cornell Daily Sun (“Ithaca’s only morning newspaper”!) I wrote, “When Kahn began hacking away at airline protectionism the airlines screamed, but today fares are lower, passenger volume is way up and airlines are actually profiting. People complain about high fares, unreliable service, lack of legroom and so on. The public’s disgruntlement has created an opening for talk about some pretty extreme solutions.

"Today's settlement includes the largest civil penalty assessed for violating the Made in USA Labeling Rule," said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "The FTC will continue cracking down on deceptive Made in USA claims that cheat consumers and honest businesses." Kubota said in a statement that it "cooperated fully with the FTC" and is voluntarily addressing its concerns. "All parts in this matter sold to customers since 2021 were produced by approved Kubota suppliers, and Kubota continues to stand behind these parts as 'Kubota Genuine Parts,'" the company said.
