The new short documentary “It’s Okay” explores the experiences of two young brothers at a Drag Story Hour event in North Carolina, one of more than a dozen states that have considered restrictions on drag performances in front of minors in recent years. An additional four states passed laws that could be used to restrict drag, according to Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank. GLAAD, a national LGBTQ media advocacy organization, found that drag events faced more than 160 protests and significant threats between early 2022 and April 2023, with some events targeted by armed protestors. France said he felt like the people who were left out of the national conversation about Drag Story Hour were the kids who attended them. If his brother was indifferent to the drag queen or the story, that would have been our film.

Edwards pleaded guilty to an appalling crime,” the publicly funded broadcaster said in a statement Friday. “Had he been upfront when asked by the BBC about his arrest, we would never have continued to pay him public money. On Wednesday last week, Edwards pleaded guilty to having 41 “indecent images of children,” all under the age of 18, on the messaging app WhatsApp, according to PA Media. London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where Edwards pleaded guilty, heard that the presenter had been in contact with an adult man on WhatsApp who sent him 377 sexual images, 41 of which were indecent images of children. The court also heard that Edwards had told a man on WhatsApp not to send him images of minors.

The dark side of the 2024 Paris Olympics

Read previewAs the 2024 Olympics Games plays out in Paris, some nonprofits are warning of a dark reality looming over the sporting event. Wijeyakumar said Rahab's Daughters had distributed pamphlets ahead of the Paris Olympics at a local refugee camp. Rahab's Daughters has identified labor and sex trafficking occurring mainly within the manufacturing, construction, retail, and hospitality industries in Paris. The US National Human Trafficking Hotline explains on its website, however, that human trafficking is "notoriously underreported." These figures are based on interviews with survivors, reports Rahab's Daughters has received, and data it has collected from online ads.

A renewed spotlight on protecting access to birth control may not help women who are already struggling to find affordable contraception in some states with the strictest abortion laws. Few community clinics have the amount of money needed to cover birth control each month, McCollum said. But over-the-counter birth control pills haven’t reached many women in rural areas. Because of the Texas policy change an estimated one-quarter of family planning clinics in the state closed by 2013. “If someone does not have insurance, we can pay for their visit and their birth control method,” McCollum said.

“TikTok knowingly and repeatedly violated kids’ privacy, threatening the safety of millions of children across the country,” FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a release. In 2019, the government sued Musical.ly, the company that later became TikTok, for alleged COPPA violations. There are 170 million American TikTok users. In 2020, Trump signed an executive order that would ban TikTok, which was struck down in court. In March, Trump said he no longer intended to ban TikTok if re-elected.

The Republican Party platform, updated last month for the first time since 2016, appeared to shift away from the party’s long-held opposition to same-sex marriage. We will end policies that punish families.”Many took this to mean the party was softening its stance on gay nuptials in a nod to growing public support for same-sex marriage, even among Republicans. The Republican National Committee did not return multiple requests for comment regarding whether the language in the new platform is inclusive of same-sex couples. We must do what is legally necessary to defend the sanctity of marriage.”Weeks later, Bush announced his support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. The phrase “sanctity of marriage,” Maril said, is “inherently exclusionary” of same-sex couples.

The lawsuit accuses TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, of violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by allowing children to create accounts without their parents’ knowledge or consent. TikTok also collects and retains personal data from children, such as email addresses, phone numbers and location data, and fails to to comply with requests from parents to delete their children’s information, the suit alleges. The Justice Department claims that TikTok has continued to violate the law, as well as that 2019 court order. TikTok has also faced previous allegations that it failed to keep young users safe , and was fined in Europe for violating children’s privacy protections. The FTC began investigating potential violations of COPPA by TikTok earlier this year, sources told CNN at the time.

Almost 40 police officers were injured in the northwestern English town of Southport on Tuesday evening after a day of mourning for children killed in a stabbing attack was disrupted by far-right protesters. A large group that the police say included supporters of the English Defence League, a far-right extremist organization, began attacking a mosque in Southport on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the Merseyside Police Service, which covers the region. Officials said that the targeting of the mosque and the ensuing riot appeared to be linked to online disinformation about the stabbing on Monday, when an attacker killed three children and injured eight other children and two adults at a dance class in Southport. The police on Monday arrested a 17-year-old who was born in Cardiff, Wales, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. In line with British law regarding minors, the police did not identify the suspect, and subsequently they warned that a name being circulated on social media was incorrect.

The emails show Vance, who had yet to embark on his run for the Senate, writing to his classmate Sofia Nelson, a Detroit-based public defender. In them, Vance denounced the GOP's embrace of Trump, calling the former president a "morally reprehensible human being," and expressed disappointment with law enforcement after the killing of Michael Brown, a Black 18-year-old, in 2014. AdvertisementIn 2015, Vance wrote that he was "obviously outraged at Trump's rhetoric," comparing him to a demagogue "willing to exploit the people who believe crazy shit." He also wrote in 2016 that "the more white people feel like voting for trump, the more black people will suffer. In a text message to a different former Yale classmate in 2016, Vance wondered if Trump could be "America's Hitler."

As Senator JD Vance seeks the vice presidency, a former Yale Law School classmate and friend has shared about 90 of their emails and text messages, mostly from 2014 through 2017, with The New York Times. The emails add to an existing body of evidence showing how Mr. Vance pivoted from a strong opponent of former President Donald J. Trump to his running mate. They also provide an insight into a cultural willingness by Mr. Vance to accept his classmate, Sofia Nelson, who is transgender. Now, Nelson, who opposes the Trump-Vance ticket, hopes the emails will inform the opinion of voters about Mr. Vance. In response, a spokesman for the Vance campaign said in a statement that it was “unfortunate” for someone to share “decade-old private conversations between friends.”

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said Thursday in her first public interview that he was an absent father who was cruel to her as a child for being queer and feminine. Wilson, 20, in an exclusive interview with NBC News, responded to comments that Musk made Monday about her and her transgender identity. She told NBC News that at the time, she was surprised by the media attention to the court filing, which she submitted when she was 18. Wilson told NBC News that those anecdotes are not true, though she said she did act stereotypically feminine in other ways as a child. A kids' bank account is a type of joint bank account where an adult and a minor both have access. Types of bank accounts for minorsThere are two primary joint bank account options: kids' savings accounts and teens' checking accounts. Depending on where you bank, you may need to open a traditional savings account or a specialized bank account tailored to children. A custodial bank account is not the same as a traditional kids' bank account. Some national banks permit online applications when opening a bank account on behalf of a minor, but many require opening a minor's first bank account at a physical branch.

The Justice Department has sued Southwest Key Programs, the nation’s largest operator of shelters for unaccompanied migrant children, accusing its employees of repeatedly subjecting minors in its care to sexual abuse and harassment. Southwest Key has worked with the federal government for more than two decades, playing a critical role in the shelter system. It has been awarded nearly $6 billion in federal funds since 2007, operating 29 shelters in Texas, Arizona and California that can house more than 6,300 children. They receive meals and educational opportunities in such shelters until they can be placed with a parent, relative or other guardian. Southwest Key documented dozens of incidents of abuse reported by children, but according to prosecutors, employees did not report abuse they had observed or knew of, or violations of policies designed to protect minors.

CNN —Gambia’s parliament has voted to uphold a landmark law that bans female genital mutilation (FGM) in the largely Muslim nation, after religious groups pushed for the legislation to be repealed. If Monday’s bid had been successful, the tiny West African country would have been the first in the world to relegalize FGM after criminalizing it. The law also punished perpetrators with life sentences in cases where the practice led to death. In Gambia, 73% of women aged between 15 and 49 years had experienced FGM as of 2020, according to the United Nations. More than 65% of those women were subjected to the practice “before the age of five years,” the UN said.
