I asked some of those who first warned about the dangers Trump poses what their views are now. At times it seems as if he cannot control himself or his hateful speech. We need to wonder if these are the precursors of a major deterioration in his character defenses. In recent months, Trump has continued to add to the portrait Glass paints of him. At the California Republican Convention on Sept. 29, Trump told the gathering that under his administration shoplifters will be subject to extrajudicial execution: “We will immediately stop all the pillaging and theft.

However the ex-president’s appeal ends against a limited gag order imposed in his federal election subversion case, he can expect a benefit. A judgment in Trump’s favor on the gag order – which has been temporarily frozen while the appeal is heard – would pale against his four criminal trials and his current civil fraud trial in New York. How the gag order case reflects Trump’s intense challenge to accountabilityThe gag order appeal is entwined with complex arguments on the breadth of the First Amendment and the extent to which courts have the right to regulate its scope in order to protect their officers and proceedings and the administration of justice. Trump’s legal team argued that any restrictions on his comments represent an unconstitutional assault on his rights to freedom of political speech. The incitement issue is not a hypothetical one in the gag order case.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers appealed the order almost as soon as it was imposed, deriding it as “the essence of censorship.”In court papers, they have told the appeals court that the order should be repealed since it violates the First Amendment. They say that this gag order in particular was needed because of Mr. Trump’s “near daily” attacks against Mr. Smith, Judge Chutkan and potential witnesses in the case, including former Vice President Mike Pence and Gen. Mark A. Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The prosecutors have tried to position themselves as protectors of both the integrity of the judicial process and the people who take part in it, telling the appeals court that Mr. Trump’s threats on social media have sometimes had damaging effects in the real world. It remains unclear how quickly the three-judge panel of the appeals court will decide on whether to rescind the gag order or keep it in place as the case moves toward its trial date. It has been in abeyance for about two weeks as the court has gotten filings from the defense and the prosecution.

As the 2024 presidential campaign heats up, experts on extremism fear the threat of politically motivated violence will intensify. Trump's loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election did not end the spread of QAnon-influenced conspiracy theories or its unrealized prophecies. “In 2020, millions of people were radicalized on behalf of this conspiracy theory. It’s really hard to tell who is going to mobilize on behalf of a conspiracy theory,” Kane said. “Spending hours and hours consuming conspiracy theory material is intoxicating,” Hughes said.

The incidents involve violence emanating from across the political spectrum, including dozens of cases of substantial property damage by leftists at political demonstrations. Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump, didn’t respond to questions from Reuters about the former president’s remarks and the impact of his rhetoric. CNN —Donald Trump is promising a second presidency that would be an aberration in American history. And Trump’s ambitions should be taken seriously because one year from the election, President Joe Biden’s reelection hopes are far from secure. He dehumanizes his political enemies, has discredited the legal, political and electoral system, has demonized the press and has targeted vulnerable members of society, minorities and immigrants, as scapegoats. With questionable historic comparisons, Trump’s critics only fuel his bid to provoke the outrage that is essential to his political appeal. Nikki Haley have only criticized Trump obliquely, understanding there’s no market in the modern Republican Party for confronting Trump’s lawlessness.

Opinion | Donald Trump Has Closed the Republican Mind

The poet Frederick Turner described “The Closing of the American Mind” as “the most thoughtful conservative analysis of the nation’s cultural sickness.”Yet today it is the American right that most fully embodies the attitudes that so alarmed Mr. Bloom. We see that most clearly in the right’s embrace of Donald Trump and the MAGA movement he represents. Mr. Trump is cruel and remorseless, compulsive and vindictive, an accomplished conspiracy theorist. While doing this, Mr. Trump has expanded his lead over his nearest rival in the race for the 2024 Republican nomination to more than 40 points. In other words, no matter how much wrongdoing Mr. Trump engages in, however outrageous and brutish his conduct, he remains wildly popular.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Iowa on Monday, Trump called the judge's order "unconstitutional" and vowed to appeal it. "I'll be the only politician in history that runs with a gag order where I'm not allowed to criticize people," Trump told supporters. The order bars Trump, frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and attorneys in the case from personally targeting Special Counsel Jack Smith, prosecutors working with him and court staff. Prosecutors sought a limited gag order that would bar certain statements from Trump during the case. The judge said she would allow Trump to make critical statements about the U.S. Justice Department and that denounce the prosecution as politically motivated.

Former President Donald Trump's lawyers told a court Tuesday that they are appealing a narrow gag order imposed on him in his federal 2020 election interference case. But Chutkan, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, said Trump can't mount a “smear campaign” against prosecutors and court personnel. At rallies and in social media posts, Trump has repeatedly sought to vilify Smith, other prosecutors, likely witnesses and even the judge. Smith’s team argued that Trump knows that his incendiary remarks could inspire his supporters to threaten or harass his targets. The case, which accuses Trump of scheming to subvert the results of the election, is scheduled to go to trial in March.

Trump, as a criminal defendant, "does not have the right to say and do exactly as he pleases," Chutkan said. The exchanges came as U.S. prosecutors sought a court order to limit Trump's public statements about people involved in the case. Trump is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 U.S. election. Molly Gaston, a prosecutor working with Special Counsel Jack Smith, said the order was necessary to prevent Trump from trying the case "in the court of public opinion." "These prosecutors want to prevent President Trump from speaking out on the issues of the day," Lauro told the judge, adding that the case is "inextricably intertwined with campaign issues."

The gag order fight underscores the unprecedented complexities of prosecuting the former president as he tries to retake the White House while fighting criminal charges in four cases. The defense had claimed Chutkan's comments about Trump in other cases raised questions about whether she had prejudged his guilt. But Chutkan said her comments were mischaracterized and there was no need for her to step aside. Prosecutors noted in a recent motion that Trump's incendiary rhetoric has continued even after their initial gag order request. Prosecutors have said their proposal would not impact Trump's ability to campaign or prevent him from publicly declaring his innocence.

Though limited in scope, the gag order from Judge Tanya Chutkan is likely the biggest limit on the former president’s speech he has ever been handed. Chutkan outlined the order in court and plans to issue a more detailed written order in the coming days. That order bars Trump only from speaking publicly about the court staff in his civil fraud trial. Chutkan also said she believed she could issue a show-cause order, which would require Trump justify why he breached the rules of the gag order. Violations of the gag order may not necessarily need to be raised by prosecutors for Chutkan to impose a penalty, she said.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump delivers remarks to supporters at the Club 47 USA event in West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S. October 11, 2023. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan plans a hearing in Washington on the bid by Special Counsel Jack Smith to bar Trump from discussing possible witnesses and disparaging prosecutors, court staff and potential jurors. Smith has cited “inflammatory public statements”, including a stream of social media attacks by Trump, that prosecutors argue are undermining public confidence in the legal system and may influence potential jurors. Trump has pleaded not guilty and accused prosecutors of attempting to interfere with his campaign. The case is one of four criminal cases federal and state prosecutors have brought against the former president this year.

Judge Orders Trump to Rein In Incendiary Language

“This is not about whether I like the language Mr. Trump uses,” U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan said in announcing the decision. But Molly Gaston, who argued for the prosecution, underscored that the Justice Department isn’t seeking to prevent Trump from campaigning. Notably, the judge’s order deals Trump one of the first major consequences he’ll have to reckon with in relation to his ongoing trials. It remains to be seen how the order will impact his daily social media presence and campaigning tactics. Trump did not immediately respond directly to Chutkan’s order, but a spokesman called it the work of “weaponized and targeted law enforcement.”

The U.S. military is moving an aircraft carrier strike group and military aircraft closer to Israel as a show of support, and will also begin supplying Israel with munitions and other military supplies immediately, said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Austin said Sunday afternoon that he had directed the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to go to the Eastern Mediterranean. The group includes the carrier, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser, and four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers. "In addition, the United States government will be rapidly providing the Israel Defense Forces with additional equipment and resources, including munitions. Though most in his party have stayed quiet, Trump's comments about Milley horrified some Republicans. Baron’s book comes at a perilous moment for American democracy and the news media tasked with covering its erosion. I think the coverage of the latest chaos has been very good, based on what I’ve read. The party is proving to be ungovernable, and that is wreaking havoc on the country as a whole. I’d like to see substantially more coverage of what a second Trump administration would do upon taking office. If news organizations believe Donald Trump is a threat to democracy and the country’s framework of government, should they remain totally neutral in covering his candidacy?

Russia has been bolstering its armed forces and ramping up weapons production in the expectation of a long war in Ukraine, where front lines have barely shifted for a year. "There are no plans for an additional mobilisation," Shoigu was shown telling top generals on state television. "The armed forces have the necessary number of military personnel to conduct the special military operation." Putin ordered a "partial mobilisation" of 300,000 reservists in September last year, prompting hundreds of thousands of young men to flee Russia to avoid being sent to fight. While Ukraine was able to win back territory last year from Russia in attacks which humiliated the Russian armed forces, this year has been different.

The same man who has relentlessly attacked his political and legal enemies on the campaign trail, in the White House and on social media – often using violent and incendiary rhetoric – is now showing up at the courthouse. But unlike with his campaign rhetoric, Trump has faced consequences in the legal world for his verbal attacks. This week’s court appearances underscored the reality that Trump’s rhetoric will be the same whether he’s outside a courthouse or on the stage of a campaign rally.
