A US F-22 fighter jet has shot down an "unidentified object" flying over northern Canada. On Friday, the US shot down another unidentified object flying roughly 40,000 feet over Alaska, and one week ago, the US took down a Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina. US officials have said the Chinese balloon was part of an operation to gather intelligence on global militaries, and was studying "strategic bases" in the US.
A recent "Twitter Files" drop revealed deep concerns among Twitter executives about a database that claimed to track Russian propaganda in "near real time." The now defunct database, Hamilton 68, was widely cited by media outlets, including Insider, before it was shut down in 2018. He wrote that based on his analysis, Hamilton 68 "falsely accuses a bunch of legitimate, right-leaning accounts of being Russian bots." Berger and ASD did not respond to a request to provide Insider with the list of accounts Hamilton 68 tracked. Roth also claimed, after reverse-engineering the list of accounts that Hamilton 68 tracked, that they were "neither strongly Russian nor strongly bots."
A Tennessee medical board suspended two EMTs for failing to provide life-saving medical care to Tyre Nichols. The Memphis Fire Department had already fired the EMTs, as well as a lieutenant, earlier this week. Tyre Nichols died in the hospital three days after being beaten by five Memphis police officers now charged with murder. The Tennessean reported that the medical board watched a 19-minute video showing the EMTs pacing and standing around while Nichols collapsed and writhed on the ground. Attorneys for Nichols' family have said an independent autopsy indicated that Nichols died from "extensive bleeding" after the beating.
Records show that Desmond Mills Jr. received a reprimand for failing to report his use of force. A woman Mills helped arrest alleged that officers beat her and slammed her head into a squad car. "Officer Mills stated he was familiar with completing the response to resistance document in Blue Team, but he did not realize it applied to his actions in this case," a document summarizing Mills' disciplinary hearing said. Mills is not the only officer who was disciplined for failing to report a use of force. In total, four out of the five officers charged in Nichols' death had previously been disciplined for various matters.
Here are five proven, data-based changes that could make a difference, and two approaches that don't seem to work, according to Campaign Zero. Track complaints about officers' use of forceMost complaints against officers aren't public, making them hard to track. These changes, along with requiring departments to report and publish online data on all uses of force, could reduce police violence. Body cameras are another method that haven't been proven effective when it comes to excessive force instances. Research has shown that 93% of prosecutors' offices have used body cameras mostly in cases against citizens, not against police.

Former President Donald Trump has filed a motion to dismiss a second lawsuit from E. Jean Carroll. Trump's attorney argued he never defamed Carroll because he didn't disparage her professionally. Carroll previously sued Trump in 2019, alleging that the then-president defamed her by claiming she invented the rape allegations. Trump's court filing on Wednesday argued that Trump's October 12 statement didn't qualify as defamation because it doesn't disparage Carroll's "trade, business or profession." In response to Insider's request for comment, Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said Carroll's team looks forward to going to trial in April 2023.

Roughly half of those fatally shot by police are white, but Black Americans are fatally shot at a disproportionate rate compared to their representation in the US population. As of December 5, 3,582 white people had been fatally shot since 2015 at a rate of 2.4 per million, whereas 1,892 Black people were fatally shot at a rate of 6 per million per year. The database also comes with a number of other qualifiers — namely, that it tracks only fatal police shootings, not fatal police encounters in general. For instance, the database includes Omar Mateen, the mass shooter who killed 49 people in an Orlando nightclub in 2016 before police fatally shot him. But even when narrowing the data down to fatal police shootings of unarmed people, it shows a similar story as the aggregate data.
