The Justice Department has denied a request by Zacarias Moussaoui, the only prisoner ever convicted in the United States of having ties to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, to serve the remainder of his life sentence in his native France. Mr. Moussaoui had made the application from the supermax prison in Colorado, using a process that is routinely available to foreign nationals held as U.S. prisoners. Then on Wednesday afternoon, two relatives of people killed in the attacks said they were notified by the Justice Department that the request was denied. “Our office appreciates your concerns and comments regarding Zacarias Moussaoui,” the email said. “I am notifying you that Mr. Moussaoui’s application to transfer to France was denied by the United States on July 26, 2024.”No explanation was offered for the delay in notification.

CNN —The Justice Department said Tuesday it filed a civil lawsuit against Norfolk Southern, alleging the company knowingly created large delays for Amtrak passengers traveling between New York and New Orleans. Norfolk Southern said it has worked with Amtrak and states to expand passenger service and is committed to complying with the law. “Over the past several months with Amtrak, we have focused on the on-time performance of the Crescent passenger train. The Justice Department on Tuesday accused Norfolk Southern, one of the country’s largest freight railroad companies, of violating federal law by delaying Amtrak passenger trains along the route between New Orleans and New York. In a complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the Justice Department said Norfolk Southern failed to give Amtrak passenger trains preference over freight trains, as it is required to do under federal law. “Norfolk Southern regularly fails to do so, leading to widespread delays that harm and inconvenience train passengers, negatively affect Amtrak’s financial performance and impede passenger rail transportation,” according to the complaint. “Americans should not experience travel delays because rail carriers break the law,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement. “Our action today alleges that Norfolk Southern violates federal law by failing to give the legally required preference to Amtrak passenger trains over freight trains.”

Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of cartel co-founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and another alleged leader of the cartel, is also in federal custody, said Attorney General Merrick Garland. The Sinaloa Cartel, named after the Mexican state where the gang was formed, is one of the most powerful drug-trafficking groups in the world, known for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and heroin into the United States. The latest indictment against Zambada, one of the most notorious drug traffickers in Mexico’s history, was in February. This means the shock ruling would be reviewed by judges from the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals based in Atlanta. Cannon in her ruling on Monday had said that Smith’s appointment as special counsel was unconstitutional, warranting the dismissal of the case against Trump.
