May 1 (Reuters) - An unexplained power outage at Manila airport's Terminal 3 on Monday led to about 40 domestic Cebu Pacific (CEB.PS) flights being cancelled, the airport said. "Flight delays are expected due to the outage", the Ninoy Aquino International Airport said in a statement posted on Facebook, without disclosing the cause of the power failure. Standby power systems were supplying electricity to critical facilities enabling airline and immigration computers to function partially and enable processing of both inbound and outbound passengers, it said. In a statement, Cebu Pacific offered its passengers departing to and from Terminal 3 an option to rebook or to request refunds to be put in a travel fund for future use. Paris CNN —More than a million people took to the streets across France on Thursday with protests turning violent in some areas as demonstrators voiced their fury at proposed pension reforms. At least 80 people were arrested and 123 police officers injured in France on Thursday during the nationwide protests, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said. French riot police apprehend a protester amid clashes during a demonstration against pension reform in Paris on March 23, 2023. It rammed the legislation through the French National Assembly last week using a constitutional clause that allows the government to bypass a vote.
The president, the government and the majority," a senior MP in Macron's camp, Gilles Le Gendre, told Liberation newspaper. Another MP in Macron's camp, Patrick Vignal, bluntly urged the president to suspend the pension reform bill, which will raise the retirement age by two years to 64, given the anger it has triggered, and its deep unpopularity. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes 1 2 3 4 5While Borne said the administration would try in future to better involve citizens and unions in lawmaking, she gave no specifics, and both said they had devoted as much time to dialogue on the pension bill as possible. Other opposition MPs urged Macron to fire Borne, call snap elections and hold a referendum on the pension bill because of the widespread anger. Polls show a wide majority of French are opposed to the pension reform, as well as the government's decision to push the bill through parliament without a vote.

[1/2] Migrants leave a French maritime protection vessel, as the boat they were travelling in with 60 other migrants began to take water in the English Channel, in an attempt to reach Britain, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, November 29, 2022. The new legislation will mean that anyone who arrives on small boats will be prevented from claiming asylum and deported to so-called safe third countries, according to government officials, who asked not to be named. The court subsequently ruled it lawful in December, but opponents are seeking to appeal that verdict. It is expected the legal battle will end up in the UK Supreme Court and may not be resolved for months. Once the small-boat crossings have ended, Britain would be prepared to create more legal routes for asylum seekers, Sunak said last year.
Today, the hulk of the 80-flat Le Signal apartment block perches precariously on a dune just metres from the water and local authorities are tearing it down before it tumbles. By 2010, the ocean was lapping at the dune on which Le Signal was built. "Le Signal's situation is largely symbolic for what is happening in terms of coastal erosion France," he said. He said ever-rising sea levels and increasingly violent storms made it impossible to let people live in Le Signal without costly shore protection measures that could also have negatively impacted nearby shorelines. "Le Signal is a warning for what could happen in other zones and for the need to prepare for it now," he said.
"We don't stop the refineries for one day", Pouyanne said, "we put them at a minimum which keeps them functioning", adding "strikers can decide to block shipments which can prevent the trucks from rolling." Operations at refineries could only be disrupted if the strike lasts several days, he said. A union representative earlier said no oil will be shipped from the TotalEnergies' refinery in Dunkirk, northern France, on Thursday. "We have plans in place to maximize our fuels supply to mitigate any potential impacts on our customers," a spokesperson from Esso said. ‘Saint Omer’ Review: A Mother on Trial
  + stars: | 2023-01-13 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
France’s “Saint Omer,” which has made it to the 15-film shortlist of contenders for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, has the trappings of a courtroom drama but with a far stranger script. For starters, the guilt of the woman in the dock, for drowning her infant in the sea, isn’t in question. The movie takes place mostly in a courtroom in Saint-Omer, a town near the northern shore of France. An author named Rama (Kayije Kagame) has obtained a seat for the jury trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanda), a Senegalese-born immigrant who caused her own baby to die in the waters of the English Channel, having taken a train to the town of Berck-sur-Mer for that purpose. Based on a real trial that took place in 2016 and was witnessed by the filmmaker Alice Diop , a specialist in documentaries who co-wrote and directed “Saint Omer,” the film inverts the conventions of the legal drama by, for instance, concluding without showing us a verdict.
Philippine leader hopes court will reconsider Manila power deal

The court allowed South Premiere Power Corp., a unit of San Miguel Corp (SMC.PS) to suspend a power supply agreement with Manila Electric Company (Meralco) (MER.PS) after the companies were prevented from raising tariffs by the regulator. "We hope that the CA (Court of Appeals) will reconsider and include in their deliberations the extremely deleterious effect this will have on power prices for ordinary Filipinos," Marcos was quoted as saying, describing the decision as "unfortunate". South Premiere and Meralco had sought to raise prices amid higher costs of coal, which the Energy Regulatory Commission rejected in September citing fixed prices set under power supply agreements. Marcos, who began his six-year term in June, has promised lower electricity rates, which are among the highest in Asia. Higher electricity prices would put further pressure on Philippine inflation, which hit the fastest pace in nearly 14 years last month.

CNN —Harry Styles has always been one to color outside the lines as an artist, and his latest music video is only the latest example. In the video for “Music For a Sushi Restaurant,” which premiered on Thursday, the former One Direction star appears as a mer-creature – half man, half squid (or is it an octopus?) – who finds himself in the kitchen of a sushi restaurant as cooks all around him chop up and fry various aquatic animal for gourmet dishes. Standout moments include Styles’ mer-creature acting like a bit of a diva backstage at the divey establishment, getting a manicure and having everyone wait on him hand and, well, tentacle. “Music For a Sushi Restaurant” is the third single off Styles’ third studio album “Harry’s House,” released in May.
Oct 19 (Reuters) - Strikes at French oil refineries have given temporary relief to volatile crude markets in Europe but created delayed demand for future months when refined product supply is set to be tight. The outages have significantly reduced demand for grades of crude in Europe that typically feed France's refineries, and weighed on prices. France also imported around 100,000 bpd of crude produced in the North Sea before the start of strike action, according to Energy Aspects. It relied on the Ekofisk North Sea crude grade, produced at a field in Norway where French oil major TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) has equity, traders said. Walkouts also ended last week at Exxon Mobil's (XOM.N) 140,000 barrel per day (bpd) Fos-Sur-Mer and 240,000 bpd Port Jerome-Gravenchon oil refineries.
One in two trains were canceled on some suburban rail lines in Paris and Eurostar canceled four services between the French and British capitals on Tuesday and Wednesday, blaming strike action. French unions called for a nationwide strike on Tuesday, expanding a weeks-long refineries strike that has caused fuel shortages and miles-long lines at gas stations. “There will be as many ordered back to work as necessary,” to respond to the needs of French people, Veran told France 2 television. He criticized ongoing blockades at refineries by French union CGT, given that a majority of workers had now agreed to wage deals with ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies. While ExxonMobil workers agreed to end their blockade of the Fos-sur-Mer refinery and depot in southern France late last week following salary negotiations, strikes continue at TotalEnergies refineries.
Oct 18 (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil's 140,000 barrel per day (bpd) fos-Sur-Mer and 240,000 bpd Port Jerome-Gravenchon oil refineries in France could take 2-3 weeks to fully restart after shutdowns caused by strikes, a company spokesperson said on Tuesday. He added a "social leasing" scheme helping low-income families access an EV for 100 euros per month would start in early 2024. "We have an industrial strategy in place for people to buy more and more French (cars)," Macron told Les Echos. Asked about boosting subsidies for European-made EVs, as the United States has done with its recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act, Macron told Les Echoes he had favoured this approach for years.

Paris CNN Business —French President Emmanuel Macron called a crisis meeting with senior ministers on Monday to address crippling strikes at gas refineries that has caused fuel pumps to run dry. Elsewhere, nearly one third of gas stations have run out of at least one fuel, with the situation expected to worsen this week, according to French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. But French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the strikes were “unacceptable and illegitimate,” because wage agreements had been met with the majority of workers. Transportation minister Clement Beaune told France Inter that the only way out of the crisis is an end to strikes. On Sunday, thousands marched through central Paris to protest the crisis and “climate inaction.”
Management at Exxon Mobil's (XOM.N) Esso France reached a deal with a majority of unions on Monday, but not the CGT.
