Photo: robyn beck/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesResults from the big tech companies have sparked investors’ hopes that the worst of the postpandemic hangover is fading, but they also show how much growth has slowed. Companies as varied as Amazon .com Inc., Google-parent Alphabet Inc., Meta Platforms Inc. and Intel Corp. signaled to investors in recent days that the brutal slowdown in sales growth that began as people emerged from the pandemic and re-engaged with daily routines was coming to an end.

Photo: frederic j. brown/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesSnap Inc. suffered its first quarterly sales drop and indicated a revenue rebound would be slow as the social-media company grapples with disruptions in the digital ad market. Snap generated $988.6 million in revenue in the first quarter, a 7% drop from the year-ago figure, the company behind the popular social media app Snapchat said Thursday. The figure was short of what Wall Street expected, according to analysts surveyed by FactSet.
Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte previously banned TikTok on all government-issued devices. Photo: Thom Bridge/Associated PressMontana’s governor is asking legislators to make changes to a bill that would be the first in the U.S. to ban TikTok outright, according to a draft of the amended bill language viewed by The Wall Street Journal. The changes would broaden the ban from applying specifically to TikTok, which is owned by China-based ByteDance Ltd., and cover social-media applications that provide certain data to foreign adversaries, according to the proposed bill language.

Photo: Peter DaSilva/ShutterstockElizabeth Holmes , the disgraced Theranos founder convicted of criminal fraud, doesn’t have to report to prison Thursday. Ms. Holmes appealed her guilty verdict to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in December and this week asked it directly if she could stay out of prison while her case makes its way through the appeals process, according to a legal filing Wednesday. The request automatically puts Ms. Holmes’s reporting date on hold while the court considers her request.

Montana lawmakers on Friday approved a first-of-its-kind bill to ban TikTok across the state, setting the stage for future court battles that could determine the fate in the U.S. of the popular, Chinese-owned social media app. The Montana House voted 54-43 to send the bill to Gov. Greg Gianforte ’s desk. The governor’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on whether or when he might sign the bill.

The federal judge who oversaw the criminal-fraud trial of Theranos Inc. founder Elizabeth Holmes denied her request to stay out of prison while she appeals her guilty verdict. Ms. Holmes was found guilty on three counts of fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit fraud against Theranos investors in January 2022. Judge Davila sentenced her in November to more than 11 years in prison and ordered her to surrender to prison April 27. She now could take her request directly to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which has already denied Ramesh “ Sunny” Balwani ’s request to stay out of prison while he appeals his conviction for defrauding Theranos investors and patients.

The metaverse that was the hot thing in tech less than two years ago has cooled. Walt Disney Co. has shut down the division that was developing its metaverse strategies, The Wall Street Journal reported this week. Microsoft Corp. recently shut down a social virtual-reality platform it acquired in 2017. And Mark Zuckerberg, who renamed Facebook to Meta Platforms Inc. to signal his seriousness about the metaverse, focused more on artificial intelligence on an earnings call last month.
