BurgerFi files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
  + stars: | 2024-09-11 | by ( Ramishah Maruf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —Fast casual chain BurgerFi filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday after months of reporting financial distress. BurgerFi, filing for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, said all of its corporate locations will operate normally. Franchise-owned locations are exempt from the bankruptcy filing, the company said in a press release. A common route is Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to solve its financial problems through reorganization. According to the bankruptcy filing Wednesday, BurgerFi estimates it had between $100 million and $500 million in liabilities, but only $50 million to $100 million in assets.

Shaw, a co-senior author of the new study, acknowledged a link between early puberty and excess weight in young girls. “I do think it plays a role, but in my practice, it’s not just those who are overweight or obese who are having early puberty,” she said. But children were most likely to be exposed to only one of them: musk ambrette, according to the report, published in Endocrinology. Musk ambrette is widely used in inexpensive or counterfeit fragrances and other scented personal care products, Shaw said. She was surprised that phthalates, which have been linked to early puberty, didn’t come up in the research.

In some places — especially in the U.S. — we aren't always delivering," Niccol wrote in the open letter addressed to customers, employees and stakeholders. Niccol, who calls himself a long-time Starbucks customer, outlined four areas for improvement: the barista experience, morning service, its cafes and the company's branding. "This is our plan for the U.S., and where I need to focus my time initially," Niccol wrote in the letter. Later, Niccol plans to address its international business, like China, its second-largest market. New York CNN —Big Lots, the beleaguered discount retailer that previously warned it had “substantial doubt” about its survival, has filed for bankruptcy. As part of its Chapter 11 filing, the retailer announced that private equity firm Nexus Capital Management is acquiring “substantially all” of Big Lots stores and business operations. Big Lots blamed several economic factors for its bankruptcy, including high inflation and interest rates. Big Lots is in the process of closing roughly 300 of its 1,400 store across the United States. Read previewAmerica's wild, multi-year shopping spree has come to an end — and retailers who got used to Americans dropping cash on just about everything are in a tough spot. US retail sales came in stronger than expected in July, with Americans spending more overall compared to the prior month, according to Census data. Around 40% of consumers said they planned to pare back spending on accessories, home decor, jewelry, and furniture, per McKinsey's survey. We're now back in an environment where good retailers, strong brands that offer compelling value … will benefit," Siegel said. In the meantime, that could mean more pain for retailers, Siegel said, speculating that many were caught by surprise by the shift in consumer sentiment.

Ordering delivery has gotten wildly expensive

DoorDash customers have continued ordering food — and, increasingly, groceries and other products — from the service, Xu said. Walmart is taking dollar stores’ customers

Dollar Tree also owns the long-struggling Family Dollar chain. While dollar stores once expanded to reach a growing number of financially strapped Americans, they underestimated just how financially strapped many Americans would become. “They missed the fact in tough times the consumer would be looking for consumables.”Meanwhile, Dollar Tree has been weighed down by its purchase of Family Dollar. Earlier this year, Dollar Tree announced that Family Dollar will close more than 900 stores, and it subsequently said it will explore a sale or spinoff of Family Dollar. In previous times of financial stress, Dollar General has seen middle-income and slightly more affluent households trade down into Dollar General to save money.

Beyond Meat will introduce a whole-muscle steak alternative as part of its pivot to win over health-conscious consumers. In recent months, Brown has blamed some of the plant-based meat industry's woes on misinformation from the meat industry and cattle farmers, such as skepticism about plant-based meat's processing. Beyond already sells plant-based steak tips, but the new product mimics the texture of a filet with mycelium, the rootlike part of fungi. Brown envisions the steak alternative as a substitute for chicken, topping salads and stuffing burritos as a source of protein. The new products have short ingredients lists, in the hopes of winning over customers who previously thought plant-based meat was too processed.

CNN —Nvidia, the AI chipmaking titan that was briefly the world’s most valuable company, has suddenly found itself in an unfamiliar position: a major rut. Nvidia (NVDA) had the worst day in the history of the stock market Tuesday, as measured by loss in total market value. To put that shocking decline into context, only 27 companies on the planet are worth as much as Nvidia lost in value Tuesday. That’s why bulls like Wedbush’s Dan Ives believe Nvidia’s stock decline presents a buying opportunity. – CNN’s Ramishah Maruf contributed to this reportCorrection: Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described TSMC's relationship with Nvidia.

McDonald’s is giving its McFlurry a makeover
  + stars: | 2024-09-04 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Nearly a year after McDonald’s ditched the hollow plastic spoon, more changes are coming for the McFlurry. McDonald’s set a goal in 2018 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its offices and restaurants by 36% between 2015 and 2030. In 2023, McDonald’s phased out the McFlurry plastic spoon, which doubled as a spindle that inserted into a machine to mix in the toppings. Also rolling out next week is a smaller McFlurry serving size, called the Mini McFlurry, for customers looking for a petite or more budget-appeasing dessert option. Adding more value-minded items, like a Mini McFlurry, could help McDonald’s reposition the chain as a source for budget-friendly food.

BurgerFi is in big trouble and may go out of business

New York CNN —BurgerFi, the fast-casual burger chain and owner of Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, is running out of cash – and options. Because of the lack of cash, BurgerFi is uncertain if it can continue to operate its 60 pizza stores and 102 burger restaurants. Food prices have also hurt BurgerFi – the company cited a price increase in chicken wings and higher wages for its increase in operating expenses. BurgerFi first rang the alarm in May, when it announced it was going over “strategic alternatives” due to its liquidity challenges. BurgerFi (BFI) went public in 2020, and its stock has dropped almost 60% year to date.

Economists like to say the cure for high prices is high prices. In other words, consumers eventually start to hold back on spending when they are faced with increasing costs. On Monday, the New York Federal Reserve reported that consumers' three-year inflation outlook hit a record low. Many economists credit the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates starting in the spring of 2022 with helping to curb the upswing. It is that last factor that the Federal Reserve is keenly focused on.
