FIFA allocated the 2030 World Cup to Spain, Portugal and Morocco last week but also said Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay would host three matches to mark the tournament's centenary. Victor Matheson, sports economist at College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, said the 2030 World Cup proposal was "extremely well done" on FIFA's part. BEER BACK ON TAPThe World Cup in Qatar also had to contend with strict controls on alcohol. Two days before the tournament kicked off, Budweiser, the official beer of the World Cup, had taps at stadiums turned off by Qatari officials. "Like it or not, that's what ends up happening and everyone in the end remembers how great Lionel Messi was and how Argentina won the World Cup," he said.

The Treasury Department subsequently kicked off a rule-making process to implement the order, and financial firms have been rushing to meet a Sept. 28 to provide input. "It could apply to companies that are outside of China but are subsidiaries of Chinese companies or controlled by a Chinese person." While the U.S. already has restrictions on some Chinese investments in the U.S. and U.S. investments in China, the order creates a new program. The program proposes exempting publicly traded securities and index and mutual funds, but financial firms want those securities to be more tightly defined. Financial firms say they support the administration's national security goals but worry about increased liability and the economic costs of restricting capital flows.

This undated handout image shows the carbon sequesterization unit at American Electric Power Company's Mountaineer Plant near New Haven, West Virginia. REUTERS/Tom Dubanowich/Handout /File PhotoAug 8 (Reuters) - U.S. power plant owners warned the Biden administration on Tuesday that its sweeping plan to slash carbon emissions from the electricity sector is unworkable, relying too heavily on costly technologies that are not yet proven at scale. Proposed in May, the EPA plan would for the first time limit how much carbon dioxide power plants can emit, after previous efforts were struck down in court. Industry is particularly concerned about proposed standards for existing natural gas power plants, saying those facilities would be hard to retrofit with CCS, or hydrogen, due to space constraints and other limitations. The EPA's proposal had been crafted to reflect constraints the Supreme Court imposed on the agency after it ruled an Obama-era power plant proposal went too far by imposing a system-wide shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Embattled digital-media company Vinco Ventures has been suspended by Nasdaq after a board exodus. It became a meme stock in 2021 after teaming up with the ex-chairman of MoviePass and touting buzzy acquisitions. The future of Vinco Ventures, the publicly traded media venture with ties to ex-MoviePass chairman Ted Farnsworth, is hanging in the balance after a series of buzzy deals collapsed and a board exodus has put the stock on the brink of a Nasdaq delisting. Shares of Vinco have nosedived 99% since their recent peak in September 2021, when meme-stock investors helped propel the stock. Farnsworth led the 2017 acquisition of MoviePass as chairman and CEO of the then-publicly-traded company Helios & Matheson Analytics, or HMNY for short.

"Meta's discovery gluttony confirms its request of eBay is not worthy of the burden Meta seeks to impose," eBay's lawyers told the California court. EBay's Quinn Emanuel attorneys derided Meta as a "litigant that has completely disregarded the bounds of reason and proportionality" in seeking information from third parties. A representative from eBay and its attorneys at Quinn Emanuel did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lawyers for eBay contend the company doesn't compete with Meta on social networking but does face off over the Facebook Marketplace e-commerce service. The case is Federal Trade Commission v. "I'm not concerned about Bank of America," one business owner said as they left a Bank of America branch on Monday. Big banks can be less competitive, for example, on interest rates because of the security they offer. I think you'll see startups, in particular, questioning moving to the big banks given just how much more expensive it is," Matheson added. "The big banks are in very good shape, and so it probably is a stabilizing decision to move those deposits.
