MEXICO CITY, Jan 5 (Reuters) - A host of top cabinet officials from the United States and Canada will take part in a North American Leaders' Summit in Mexico City next week, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Thursday. U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will visit Mexico City early next week for meetings that will encompass climate change, competitiveness, immigration, security and equity, Ebrard said. The summit will be the first in person encounter between the three leaders since late 2021. Biden and Lopez Obrador would meet for private talks on Monday afternoon, after which high level meetings would take place between Mexican and U.S. officials, Ebrard told a news conference alongside the Mexican president. On Tuesday, a trilateral meeting between Biden, Trudeau and Lopez Obrador would take place, as well as a working lunch for the government delegations.
After efforts to reach a deal failed, Panama on Dec. 15 said First Quantum must shut down its Cobre Panama mine. The Cobre Panama mine is considered the largest private investment in the Central American country, accounting for roughly 3.5% of its gross domestic product. First Quantum reported revenue from Cobre Panama of $2.29 billion in the first nine months of this year. The dispute centers around Panama seeking an increase in annual payments to at least $375 million. Though mainly focused on copper, First Quantum also mines nickel, zinc and cobalt in projects across South America, Africa, Europe and Australia.
OTTAWA, Dec 20 (Reuters) - The Biden administration said on Tuesday it was requesting new dispute settlement consultations under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade deal related to Canadian dairy import tariff policies. The United States initiated dispute consultations over some Canadian dairy tariff-rate quotas in May, alleging Canada's allocations deny U.S. retailers access to its markets and undermine the agreement. Last year, the United States requested the creation of a panel under USMCA rules to resolve a dispute over Canadian dairy quotas after failing to settle the issue with Ottawa. The panel in a 50-page report in January said Canada violated the trilateral trade accord by reserving most of its preferential dairy tariff-rate quotas for Canadian processors. Canada has said that it amended its allocation policies for dairy quotas after the panel report.
That’s not necessarily her coach – nor her training partners – but a much younger group of runners who have started frequenting Ngugi’s athletics track in the Kenyan town of Nyahururu. After launching Nala Track Club several weeks ago, which she believes is the first all-girls athletics club in Kenya, Ngugi has found added fuel for her own training. “It’s sad we had to experience such a traumatic thing for us to start the Women’s Athletics Alliance,” says Ngugi. Looking beyond athletics, Ngugi points to cultural norms that have created inequality between men and women. Ngugi (right) balances her marathon career with overseeing Nala Track Club.
MEXICO CITY, Nov 25 (Reuters) - A decision should be made very soon on a dispute pitting Canada and Mexico against the United States on the interpretation of regional trade rules in the auto industry, Canada Minister of International Trade Mary Ng said on Friday. Canada this year joined Mexico in a complaint against the United States over how to apply automotive sector content requirements under the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) free trade agreement, which came into effect in 2020. Mexico and Canada favor a more flexible interpretation of the rules than Washington, and Mexico said in August that dispute panel hearings were beginning. Those disagreements have led to a separate energy dispute under USMCA that pits Ottawa and Washington against Mexico. Ng this week said Canada had begun exploratory discussions with Ecuador over a potential free trade agreement.
Over the weekend, ministers and senior officials from all member countries met in Singapore for their sixth meeting to review the progress of the agreement. Over the weekend, member countries discussed the bloc's progress, resolved to maintain global trade and counter protectionism. Member countries agreed to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities and promote the integration of small- and medium-sized enterprises in global supply chains.
