July marked a third straight month that egg prices rose on an annual basis, a reversal from a year of relative decreases. The culprit was a continued battle against the highly pathogenic avian influenza, known in short as HPAI or the bird flu. Inflation in egg prices became a focus for consumers during the pandemic given their ubiquity in everyday cooking. The bird flu had a historic outbreak in 2022 and surged once again at the end of 2023. That can underscore the impact of any bird flu outbreaks on the prices customers see on grocery store shelves.

Analysts are expecting Nintendo to release a successor to its hit Switch console in its fiscal year 2025. The global video game market is set for sluggish annual growth this year amid weak sales of gaming consoles, according to a new report from market research firm Newzoo. In a blog post published Tuesday, Newzoo said the games industry is set to grow 2.1% year over year to an estimated $187.7 billion. That is slightly down from an earlier January forecast in which the firm said it expects the video game industry to grow 2.8% to $189.3 billion in 2024. Though it's a step up from last year's growth rate of 0.6%, the games industry isn't experiencing the same growth rates it saw in the heady days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

watch nowBy most accounts, the rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA, was disastrous from the start. Even now, some college students don't know the status of their aid awards for the fall. "The Department's poor planning has led to a stunning failure: Some college students might not have financial aid dollars in their hands in time to start classes in the next few weeks," said Beth Maglione, interim president and CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Families 'are falling back on borrowing for college'For many families, financial aid is crucial when it comes to covering college costs, which have now crept into the six figures. The share of parents taking out federal parent PLUS loans to help cover the costs of their children's college education has also grown, other studies show.

Taylor told me that strength training now makes up 90% of her routine. Gyms are quickly becoming Gen Z's favorite hangout spot — but there's just one problem with the fitness boom. Chains like Planet Fitness rely on members never showing up; the gyms aren't built for Gen Z. Planet Fitness, the most popular gym franchise in the US, has on average 6,500 members per gym.

There are cracks forming in the US jobs market

CNN —The pandemic threw the US job market into chaos, but four years later, things finally seem to be back to normal. Most indicators support the idea that the labor market is no longer overheated and could easily maintain a new normal of steady, but slower growth. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 4.1%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. “This is a labor market that’s otherwise moderated,” Nick Bunker, director of North American economic research at Indeed, told CNN. The same goes for the prime-age labor force participation rate, which at 83.7% also is the highest in 23 years.

Stocks sold off Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling nearly 500 points, as investors’ fears over a recession surfaced. The 10-year Treasury yield broke below 4% for the first time since February in a sign that more investors were seeking safe-haven assets. That weak data comes a day after the Fed chose to keep rates at the highest levels in two decades. “The economic data keep rolling on in the direction of a downturn, if not recession, this morning,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS, a financial market research company. The S&P 500 is still up about 14% for the year, coming off its eighth-positive month in the last nine in July.

It’s been a year since interest rates reached a two-decade high, but they may soon begin to reverse course. The Federal Reserve is expected to hold its benchmark interest rate steady on Wednesday, while signaling that a cut is possible when policy-setting officials meet again in September. If interest rates are elevated for too long, they risk weakening the employment picture. The central bank uses interest rates to influence the broader economy. Home-equity lines of credit and adjustable-rate mortgages — which each carry variable interest rates — generally rise within two billing cycles after a change in the Fed’s rates.

In this photo illustration, bottles of Heineken beer are displayed on July 31, 2023 in San Anselmo, California. Heineken shares opened nearly 7% lower on Monday, after the brewing giant's first-half profit growth came in weaker than analysts had expected. In an update that had been keenly-awaited by analysts, Heineken revised its operating profit organic growth forecast for the year to a range between 4% to 8%. The major miss was in Europe, which saw just 0.2% profit growth versus an expectation of 15.1%, largely because of increased promotional spending in a competitive market, Barclays said. Heineken said it "consolidated leadership" in low and no-alcohol beer sales, with Heineken 0.0 — a no-alcohol beer — up 14%.

But these days, other fast-food chains have revived the $5 price point, hoping to win over customers who have cut back their spending. Sensing diners' fast-food backlash, players such as Brinker International's Chili's have used their marketing to highlight their own value relative to the cost of a fast-food meal. Shares of McDonald's, Burger King parent Restaurant Brands International and Wendy's have all slid by double digits this year. Taco Bell owner Yum Brands is down more than 1% in 2024. But experts and think tanks have long said this is a policy change that an aging China desperately needs. It's currently running a lopsided policy of letting women retire up to 10 years earlier despite them living significantly longer on average than men. The pension problemKey to the retirement overhaul are China's pension funds. AdvertisementMost Chinese workers receive a state pension, which can be boosted by retirement funds from employers and personal contributions. Experts say that either way, Beijing will need more than a simple policy change to fix its crisis.

Many U.S. EV owners, in particular, are having second thoughts. EV adoption has slowed in the U.S., even as the recent earnings and delivery reports from both GM and Ford showed sizable increases in EV sales. Ford said EV sales were up 60%, to nearly 24,000 units, but CEO Jim Farley described a "more realistic and sharpened" EV plan during its earnings call. Drury said that some distinctions are becoming clear between all EV owners and those who are most satisfied. As battery range and density increase, and EV charging infrastructure improves, and prices continue down, Brauer said the picture should brighten for EV sales.

Practical purchases dominated this year's Amazon Prime Day in the US, the 48 hours of mega-discounts that generate billions in sales. Last year, consumer electronics and cosmetics were among the top Prime Day purchases, CNBC reported. Adobe Analytics forecasted before the mega-sale that this year's Prime Day would hit a record $14 billion in sales, breaking 2023's record by 10.5%. And it's too early to know what Amazon shoppers bought around the world: Some countries' Prime Day sales stretch for nearly a week, while India's Prime Day happens later this summer. LONDON — While the European men's soccer championship ended in gloom yet again for England, the tournament boosted the nation's grocery store and hospitality spending — with no and low-alcohol sales seeing a particular boom. Take-home grocery sales increased 2.2% across the four weeks to July 7, with beer sales up by an average 13% on England match days, market research firm Kantar said in research released Tuesday. No and low-alcohol beer sales meanwhile spiked 38%, Kantar said, attributing this to the fact that many England matches were held on weeknights. It is the latest sign of strength in the no and low-alcohol beer market, which has grown rapidly in recent years with offerings from both the brewing juggernauts and incumbents such as Lucky Saint, which is served in cans and on tap in thousands of U.K. pubs and bars. Research firm IWSR forecasts the U.K.'s total beverage alcohol market will see a 1% decline across volume and value over the next five years, as no and low-alcohol grows 19%.
