It also has stores in Guam and the US Virgin Islands, where it does not face competition from more successful big box stores. At the time of the 2005 merger Kmart had about 1,400 stores and Sears nearly 900 full-line US stores. Today only a handful of Sears stores remain, although it has outlets thatoperate under the Sears Hometown brands. The chain grew rapidly for several decades, claiming the discount segment of the market that big box stores now dominate.

Nygren, portfolio manager at Oakmark Funds for 40 years, said the technology sector has grown so powerful in the S & P 500 that the 25 or so largest names make up about half the investment. "It's not nearly as diversified as investors think it is. I think we will see investors revisit the idea of the S & P 500 being kind of the low-risk way to invest in equities," Nygren said on CNBC's " Money Movers " on Monday. "It's become so important to us that we invest with companies that are taking matters into their own hands and using excess capital to repurchase their own stock," Nygren said.

Victims' families and a survivor of a Maryland bridge collapse that killed six people filed claims Friday for wrongful death and punitive damages against the owner and the operator of the massive cargo ship that crashed into the bridge earlier this year. The 100,000-plus-ton ship Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of March 26 as a work crew was fixing potholes. Six construction workers died when the bridge went crumbling down into the Patapsco River. The nearly two dozen crew members on the ship survived, along with two pilots who were helping the vessel navigate the harbor. Days after the bridge collapse, the ship’s Singapore-based owner and manager petitioned a Maryland court to limit their monetary liability to $43.67 million, the value of the ship and its cargo, based on a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law.
