As things stand now, 48 states are set to allocate their electors this November according to the winner of the popular vote in their state. There, electoral votes are partially divvied up on a proportional basis. In Maine, two of the state’s four electoral votes go to the winner of the popular vote, while the other two are split between its two congressional districts. Biden won that election with 306 electoral votes; the Nebraska elector did not make a difference. Which is why Nebraska Republicans have launched an effort, backed by Trump, to end its quasi-proportional allocation of electoral votes.

"These headline CPI numbers do not reflect reality as I see it." The Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI is a key inflation metric — a broad measure of the cost of goods and services across the economy. Cramer first pointed to the 0.9% month-over-month increase in the price of meat, poultry, fish and eggs, with the latter alone climbing 4.6%. According to Cloudflare, a cloud-computing service used by about 20 percent of websites globally, internet traffic dipped along the path of totality as spellbound viewers took a break from their phones and computers to catch a glimpse of the real-life spectacle. The places with the most dramatic views saw the biggest dips in traffic compared with the previous week. In Vermont, Arkansas, Indiana, Maine, New Hampshire and Ohio — states that were in the path of totality, meaning the moon completely blocked out the sun — internet traffic dropped by 40 percent to 60 percent around the time of the eclipse, Cloudflare said. States that had partial views also saw drops in internet activity, but to a much lesser extent. At 3:25 p.m. Eastern time, internet traffic in New York dropped by 29 percent compared with the previous week, Cloudflare found.

In an awe-inspiring cosmic coincidence, the moon and sun perfectly aligned this afternoon, producing a total solar eclipse visible across North America. The moon’s shadow plunged daylight into darkness, carving a path from Mexico, up to Maine and into Canada. The moon’s shadow then carried on to Russellville, Ark., where 100 or so couples were pronounced married; Buffalo, where hundreds listened to “Here Comes the Sun”; and Montreal, where locals on Mount Royal applauded. In some places like Wyoming County, N.Y., crowds were disappointed to see a sky full of clouds. But elsewhere — even away from the path of totality, like in New York City — crowds delightfully squinted through protective glasses.
