CNN —A Michigan mother died after pushing her 2-year-old daughter away from an out-of-control vehicle at a drag racing event on Sunday, police say. Kadie Price, 33, was a spectator at the racing event, which took place at the Silver Lake State Park Sand Dunes in Michigan’s western Oceana County. That vehicle then slammed into Price – seconds after she had pushed her daughter safely out of the way. Silver Lake State Park Sand Dunes is a popular destination for its 450-acre off-road-vehicle area, approximately 80 miles from Grand Rapids. A farmworker in Michigan has been diagnosed with bird flu, state officials announced on Wednesday, making it the second human case associated with the outbreak in cows. Officials said that the individual became infected with the virus, called H5N1, after exposure to infected livestock. They did not provide additional details in order to protect the privacy of the farm and farmworker, they said. In 2022, a person in Colorado with direct exposure to infected poultry became the first confirmed human case of H5N1 in the United States. The detection of this latest case did not suggest that bird flu was widespread in people, officials said, adding that the risk to the general public remained low.

The House select committee on China has asked the Justice Department and F.B.I. to investigate reports that Chinese authorities covered up positive doping tests for nearly half the swim team it sent to the last Olympic Games and that the global antidoping regulator failed to take action. “This scandal raises serious legal, ethical and competitive concerns and may constitute a broader state-sponsored strategy by the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.) to unfairly compete at the Olympic Games in ways Russia has previously done,” the panel’s chairman, Representative John Moolenaar, Republican of Michigan, and its senior Democrat, Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, said in a letter to Attorney General Merrick B.
