CNN —The Supreme Court on Monday declined to review an appeal from a group of parents who claimed their suburban Washington-area school district was hiding transgender support plans involving their children. It’s the latest in a series of cases where the high court has dodged the issue of transgender rights at school – often leaving in place lower court rulings that sided with trans students. The appeals court said that the parents had not established that they were injured in a way that allowed them to sue. Three years ago, the Supreme Court declined to take up an appeal from a Virginia school district about whether schools may ban transgender students from using a bathroom that reflects their gender identity. Last year, the court denied West Virginia’s request to let it enforce a state law that bans transgender women and girls from participating on public school sports teams.

While President Biden tries to assuage voter concerns about his age in a presidential race that includes the two oldest men ever to seek the White House, a couple of miles away in the U.S. Senate, the gerontocracy remains alive and well — and little commented upon. The recent news that two octogenarians — Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont, 82, and Angus King of Maine, 80 — are each running for another six-year term generated little in the way of criticism or worry over age of the kind that Mr. Biden has faced. CNN —The man who attacked three New York City police officers with a machete on New Year’s Eve in 2022 has been sentenced to 27 years in prison, federal prosecutors announced Thursday. “Inspired by radical Islamic extremism, Trevor Bickford brutally attacked three NYPD officers who were just doing their jobs by protecting the public during the Times Square New Year’s Eve festivities,” US Attorney Damian Williams said in a Thursday statement. He then swung the blade at a third officer, who shot him in the shoulder, according to police. Bickford later admitted he intended to kill as many military-aged, government-employed men as he could before himself becoming a martyr, CNN has previously reported. He had planned to travel overseas to support the Taliban but ultimately decided to turn his attention to an attack in the US, the release said.

A 1.6-mile stretch of slowly cascading ice just above Base Camp called the Khumbu Icefall. The Khumbu Icefall looks like a frozen waterfall. They're called the Icefall Doctors, and this year, they delayed Everest's climbing season by 12 days due to unsafe conditions on the Khumbu Icefall. Between 1953 and 2019, 45 people lost their lives on the Khumbu Icefall. Everset's history, 15 of the 18 total deaths were caused by acute mountain sickness, falls, and disappearances.

Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines said the number of ransomware attacks worldwide grew as much as 74% in 2023.
