Tanks have big guns, but medium-caliber cannons on other armored vehicles can be just as deadly. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile tanks and their big guns have been getting the lion's share of attention in Ukraine, another weapon is proving equally deadly. Medium-caliber cannon — the 20-mm to 40-mm cannon found on infantry fighting vehicles, air-defense vehicles, and other platforms around the world — have been wreaking damage against infantry and other targets. Personnel load the gun of a BMP-2 amphibious infantry fighting vehicle during an arms exhibition Russia in September 2013. The effectiveness of medium-caliber cannons suggest that as armored vehicles evolve, those guns will remain part of their armament.

A record-high share of Americans is taking on monthly car payments of $1,000 or more. Car payments exceed housing as the biggest expense for some Gen Zers and millennials. Last year, the median monthly rent payment in the US was roughly $1,000, according to the Federal Reserve. Sherbina said managing his high monthly car bill — in addition to his other living expenses — could be stressful. "Having this high of a car payment is both stressful and has some psychological impacts," he said.

Most of the fighting has been hidden from the view of the news media since the start of operations in early June. Ukraine’s new brigades, trained and equipped according to NATO standards, have a different look and feel from many other Ukrainian units. These marines now carry American M4 assault rifles and drive Humvees, which they repainted, changing the desert brown of the vehicles so often seen in Afghanistan and Iraq to a deep green for better cover in Ukraine’s lush countryside. He watched as men from his unit loaded two laser-guided rockets into a launcher on the back of a Humvee for a firing mission. “It’s a great new system and we have new vehicles too,” he added.

But in an exclusive interview, Ukraine's head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, said that the Wagner fighters went far further. The only barrier between the Wagner fighters and nuclear weapons, Budanov said, were the doors to the nuclear storage facility. It is one of Russia's 12 "national-level storage facilities" for nuclear weapons, according to a report by U.N. scientists. Another female resident also said Wagner had widespread support in the town, and that many Wagner fighters are from Boguchar.

These were 36 hours that provided a glimpse of the end of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rule. Two hours earlier, Wagner were at the gates of the capital (almost), and then suddenly everything is forgiven. Did he accept entering the capital would leave his men vulnerable, even to a weak Russian military response? While on the surface, Prigozhin’s climbdown makes him appear weak, even finished, he has been the decision-maker over the past 36 hours. The most optimistic assessment you could make is that Russian military morale must have felt a hiccup while watching its commander-in-chief and most prominent military figure engage in a 24-hour game of chicken.

The Russian forces are led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a billionaire and former close ally of Putin. Prigozhin's defiant march toward Moscow was the culmination of a months-long feud with top Russian military leaders. Prigozhin had for years been a close ally of the Russian president, dubbed "Putin's chef" after growing wealthy from state catering contracts. With much of the Russian military bogged down in Ukraine, however, few security forces have been left to challenge Wagner directly. According to videos and photos shared on social media, Wagner forces were also in possession of advanced air defense equipment, limiting the Kremlin's ability to attack them from the sky.

Videos show what appears to be Russian workers tearing up highways outside Moscow. Wagner Group fighters have been advancing on Moscow since early Saturday. Tensions between Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin and Russian military leaders have mounted for months. It's unclear who is operating the construction equipment seen in the images. Russian security forces set up traffic checkpoints with armed guards on Russia's M4 highway, which leads to Moscow, on Saturday, according to Reuters.

Residents of Moscow have been ordered to stay home on Monday. Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said authorities are on "high alert" as Wagner force approach the capital. Sobyanin urged residents to stay home "as much as possible." The apparently bloodless capture of the city was followed by reports that Wagner forces are marching toward Moscow. Wagner forces then made it to the region of Lipetsk, according to the local governor, just a few hours' drive from the capital.

Wagner Group fighters entered the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don in an apparent armed rebellion. What happens next will largely depend on the loyalty of Russia's security forces, the department said. "With very limited evidence of fighting between Wagner and Russian security forces, some have likely remained passive, acquiescing to Wagner," the department said. The loyalty of Russia's security forces, particularly the Russian National Guard, will be "key to how the crisis plays out," it added. Unverified videos have circulated on social media appearing to show Wagner fighters moving through the Voronezh region toward Moscow.

The best of Milan Design Week 2023

Milan CNN —The design world’s largest annual fair enjoyed a return to full pre-pandemic form with its 2023 showcase, transforming the city of Milan with hundreds of exhibitions, site-specific installations, pop-ups and public projects. Almost everywhere, the focus was on sustainable design, circular economy, material innovation and artistry combining craft with innovation. Some of the most interesting ideas were those that looked at waste – literally – to rethink what design can do when it uses what is already there. Shown in various stages of decomposition, the chair challenged viewers to approach products with the end of their lifecycle in mind. The area, part of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, is a hotbed for fighters of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella organisation of Sunni Islamist groups. A TTP spokesman, Muhammad Khurasani, told Reuters its main target was Pakistan's military, but the police were standing in the way. "Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa pays a greater price for that" because of its exposure to the Islamist militants, he said. The TTP ended the ceasefire in November 2022, and regrouped militants restarted attacks in Pakistan soon after. The US Army is changing the name of its new rifle after accidentally taking a name from another gun. The light machine gun set to replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, or SAW, the M250, will not change. "The Army originally chose the designation XM5 as the name of the new rifle in March," a service spokesperson said in a statement. The 6.8mm was seen as a compromise between the light ammo currently used and the 7.62mm ammo used in the M240B machine gun that would be very heavy for a standard rifleman. Soldiers will also use 20-round magazines, a 10-round decrease from the magazines the Army has been using for decades.
Astronomers classify night skies from dark to bright using the Bortle Scale, ranked from one to nine. Light pollution is when artificial light washes out the night sky and makes it hard to see stars. While it might not be as potentially harmful as other kinds of pollution, light pollution can affect human health. Level four classifies the transition from suburban to rural areas, where you can see the Milky Way. The night sky is brimming with stars, making it harder to parse out faint constellations.

A Reuters poll of economists had pointed to net lending of just under 1 billion pounds. "September's money and credit figures point to further signs that consumers have been become more cautious in response to the weakening economic outlook," said Ashley Webb, UK economist at consultancy Capital Economics. The BoE figures showed a huge jump in the money supply, which on the M4 measure rose by 2.1% in September alone. The sub-category of M4 which covers companies like pension funds and life assurance firms jumped by a record 67.8 billion pounds in September, more than double the previous record.
