Aug 1 (Reuters) - Britain's Domino's Pizza Group (DOM.L) announced a 70 million pound ($89.78 million) share buyback programme on Tuesday and raised its annual profit forecast range helped by higher orders and sales in the first half of the year. Resilient customer spending has helped the UK hospitality slowly recover from pandemic lows amid pressures from high costs. In the first half of the year, total orders increased 2.8% to 35.4 million, helping the company to post an 8.2% rise in underlying core profit. The company, a franchisee of U.S.-based Domino's Pizza Inc (DPZ.N), said it now expects an underlying core profit of about 132 million pounds - 138 million pounds for the year. Analysts on average had expected 127.6 million pounds, according to a company-compiled consensus.

Not that there isn’t plenty to praise in “Here Lies Love,” the immersive disco-bio-musical about Imelda Marcos that opened on Thursday at the Broadway Theater. Because the real star of this show is the astonishing architectural transformation of the theater itself, by the set designer David Korins. That she would probably adore the over-emphatic atmosphere of “Here Lies Love” — with its lurid lighting by Justin Townsend, skittering projections by Peter Nigrini and earsplitting sound by M.L. For here we are, at the place where irony and meta-messaging form a theatrical-historical knot that can’t be picked apart. Which is why, as you clap, you should probably wonder what for.

He hugged the owners of his new team, including the former star David Beckham. 10 — Lionel Messi grinned and looked up at the crowd and the fireworks. If it has felt like a dream that Messi, who won the World Cup in December as Argentina’s captain and who has claimed seven Ballons d’Or as the world’s best player, chose Inter Miami of M.L.S. as his team for the twilight of his career, his unveiling event was proof that, yes, this has actually happened. LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) - Investment group Ashmore's (ASHM.L) assets under management dropped by $1.8 billion in the three months to June 30, down 3% from the previous quarter, as investors retreated from emerging markets owing to global macroeconomic uncertainties. Net outflows amounted to $2.9 billion, the emerging markets-focused asset manager reported on Friday, citing institutional clients' top-down asset allocation decisions to pull back on emerging market hard-currency debt and other fixed income in developing economies. Meanwhile, a positive investment performance of $1.1 billion cushioned the overall impact on assets under management, which stood at $55.9 billion at the end of June. "There remains some global macro uncertainty and certain investors have therefore reduced risk during the quarter," said Chief Executive Mark Coombs. "However, emerging markets continue to perform well, with support from improving fundamentals such as accelerating GDP growth, falling inflation and the potential for rate cuts, as well as the benefit of a weaker U.S.

On Sunday in Seattle, for the fourth year in a row — enough for a full class of college prospects — Major League Baseball will hold a streamlined version of its amateur draft. From an event with unlimited rounds to one with 50 rounds, then 40, and now just 20, the draft is exclusive and efficient, in keeping with baseball’s restructured minor league system. But efficiency has a cost: the countless long-shot careers that may never be realized. Dozens of current major leaguers turned pro after being drafted in rounds that no longer exist. Chosen 941st overall from a community college in Illinois, he has won three Gold Gloves, played in the World Series and earned more than $60 million in an 11-year career.

Germán completed the perfect game by inducing a groundout from Esteury Ruiz, the speedy Oakland outfielder. It was the second Yankee no-hitter in the past three seasons, following a 2021 performance by Corey Kluber against the Texas Rangers. The masterpiece of a game was the highest point, by far, in an uneven season for Germán. He has put together strong outings, like when he allowed only one run over 8 ⅓ innings against Cleveland last month. But his past two starts were a far cry from that showing, yielding 15 earned runs over 5 ⅓ innings against Boston and Seattle.

Lithium miner Premier's shares slide on Zimbabwe force majeure

HARARE, June 26 (Reuters) - Shares in Premier African Minerals (PREM.L) plunged 40% on Monday after the company declared force majeure at its Zimbabwe lithium mine, citing a defect at its processing plant. Premier said it issued a force majeure notice to Canmax on June 25 because milling problems at its recently completed plant had affected production plans. "The company is unable to deliver product within the stipulated dates as set out in the agreement," Premier said. Triggering a force majeure clause in contracts allows certain terms of an otherwise legally binding agreement to be ignored because of unavoidable circumstances. However, in the context of the current stage of discussions with Canmax in respect of the amended agreement, Premier will now engage with these other interested parties," it said.

Thyssenkrupp hydrogen IPO calls for leap of faith

Once known as the Swiss army knife of climate change for its myriad potential applications in heating, heavy industry and vehicles, green hydrogen has fallen to earth. High fossil fuel prices have also made green hydrogen more affordable relative to other types made from gas. Yet green hydrogen is mostly confined to large-scale industrial usages like steel and ammonia manufacturing. López Borrego will do well to get his IPO away at 3 billion euros without a tangible discount. Switching an average European steel site to green hydrogen could cost 7 billion euros, according to a Hydrogen Europe report.

It comes as hydrogen technology is getting a boost from favourable legislation in the United States and Europe, which are both seeking to strengthen the technology to help carbon dioxide-heavy industries, including steel and chemicals, to decarbonise. "A potential IPO would enlarge the financial flexibility of Thyssenkrupp Nucera and raise its profile as a leading supplier of technology for the production of green hydrogen," he said. The listing, which is run by Citi (C.N) and Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), will primarily consist of new shares, Thyssenkrupp Nucera said. First-half sales were up 74% at 306 million euros, while the group's earnings before interest and tax rose 87% to 13.3 million euros. "With our electrolysis technology we want to shape a new era of the energy transition," said Werner Ponikwar, chief executive of Thyssenkrupp Nucera.

Instead, Mr. Messi appears to be headed to Inter Miami, the M.L.S. team co-founded by David Beckham. It’s a sign that near-limitless oil money can’t buy everything — but the complicated arrangements to bring Messi to Florida also hint at what it takes to trump Saudi riches. What Mr. Messi stands to get: Contract details haven’t been released, but what’s known about Inter Miami’s offer to the Argentine star includes a roster spot free from the limits of M.L.S. salary rules and, highly unusually, an ownership stake in Inter Miami once his playing career ends.

Should the deal be finalized, Messi’s signing would be the biggest coup for M.L.S. That deal shifted perceptions of the league’s quality, and its ambitions, around the world; capturing Messi would, if anything, deliver even more attention to the league in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup. Messi admitted, in his interview, that Miami had — perhaps — not been his first choice of destination as his contract at his most recent team, Paris St.-Germain, ran down. He “obviously really wanted to return,” he said, and had discussed the idea with both Xavi Hernández, the club’s manager, and Joan Laporta, its president. Ultimately, though, Barcelona’s financial turmoil forced his hand.

The companies in discussion are largely small- to mid-sized, making them achievable targets, as opposed to firms listed on the FTSE 100. 'DRY POWDER'One of the contributing factors for PE firms' abundance of cash, or "dry powder", is the continued buildup of uninvested capital during the pandemic, according to fund managers. During the first five months of 2023, nine listed firms on the London Stock Exchange were approached by PE firms, exceeding the number of targets in the same time period last year, according to Refinitiv data. Among those out shopping for firms, many seem attracted to these lower valuations of small- and mid-cap firms. Though firms listed on the smaller UK indexes are more domestically focused than their larger counterparts, analysts point out that nearly half of their revenue is from their international presence, making them an even more attractive purchase for PE firms.

The Tiny Craft Mapping Superstorms at Sea Shortly after dawn on Sept. 30, 2021, Richard Jenkins watched a Category 4 hurricane overrun his life’s work. That August, a sister ship, SD 1031, successfully entered Tropical Storm Henri, but only in its early stages. Hurricane research, modeling and forecasting requires many terabytes of data for every square mile the storm passes through, including vitally important sea-level data from inside a storm. The next day, the depression was upgraded to a tropical storm and officially given the name Sam. And four months later, Tropical Storm Megi killed more than 150, wiped out several villages with landslides and displaced more than a million people.
Having written about Muhammad Ali, Al Capone, Jackie Robinson and other touchstones of the American imagination, Jonathan Eig says he recognizes a common trait in the disparate personalities he’s explored. “Most of them, if not all of them, have a serious streak of rebellion running through their lives,” Eig said. “King: A Life,” will be published on May 16 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Eig builds on the ongoing reappraisal of King’s legacy with new archival material and extensive interviews with people who lived, worked and fought at his side. Many of these interviews were conducted with some urgency: The window to speak to people who knew King personally is closing, Eig said.
The New Definitive Biography of Martin Luther King Jr.

KING: A Life, by Jonathan EigGrowing up, he was called Little Mike, after his father, the Baptist minister Michael King. Only in college did he drop his first name and began to introduce himself as Martin Luther King Jr. This was after his father visited Germany and, inspired by accounts of the reform-minded 16th-century friar Martin Luther, adopted his name. King Jr. was born in 1929. One writer, quoted by Jonathan Eig in his supple, penetrating, heartstring-pulling and compulsively readable new biography, “King: A Life,” called it “the richest Negro street in the world.”Eig’s is the first comprehensive biography of King in three decades.
In the redevelopment plan, Meiji Jingu and a neighboring venue, the Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, which opened in 1947 and was used as a soccer venue during the 1964 Summer Olympics, would be demolished in phases. The entire project, which includes skyscrapers and a hotel, is scheduled to be completed by 2036. At that point it will have been just over 100 years since a lineup of M.L.B. stars played five games at Meiji Jingu during a tour of Japan in 1934. Ruth put on a show by hitting 13 home runs, five of them in Meiji Jingu.

A three-time All-Star who played his last Major League Baseball game in 2020, he is attempting a comeback with the Ducks, whose 126-game season began on Friday with a road game in North Carolina. Murphy, along with some other long shots, intends to grind it out in the Atlantic League despite being 38 and having earned nearly $80 million in a 12-season major league career. The Atlantic League, which has been active since 1998, is a place of optimism and experimentation.
