  + stars: | 2023-04-26 | by ( Ligaya Mishan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
What kind of cheesecake withstands burning and triumphs, and sears itself into the memories of child and worldly wise alike? The ingredient list is brief: for the filling, only cream cheese, sugar and vanilla extract. Oklahoma State University even features a recipe on its website, one of seemingly countless online. Kitsopoulos took a recipe from Pillsbury, developed by Deborah Harroun, the writer of the Taste and Tell blog. Where Pillsbury advises first rolling out the dough for the topping on parchment paper, she just plops it on.
We're buying 350 shares of Foot Locker (FL), at roughly $40.43 apiece. Following Monday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 700 shares of FL, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 1.06% from 0.53%. There hasn't been a lot of news around Foot Locker dating back to our initial buy in March , with the exception of one key data point. In late March, CEO Mary Dillon disclosed she purchased roughly $500,000 worth of Foot Locker stock , at $39.74 a share — bolstering our confidence in the company's turnaround strategy. Dillon joined Foot Locker last year after a very successful run as CEO of Ulta Beauty (ULTA).
Photo: Mark Makela/ReutersWhen Staple Street Capital invested in Dominion Voting Systems in 2018, the New York private-equity firm foresaw potential risks if the company’s voting machines malfunctioned. It didn’t imagine Dominion would be falsely accused of helping to rig a presidential election. Dominion this week reached a $787.5 million settlement in its defamation suit against Fox News parent Fox Corp. over the network’s 2020 broadcasts that amplified false election-fraud charges. The settlement is a windfall for Staple Street, which paid $38 million for a 76% stake in the business through two private-equity funds.
[1/3] Dominion lawyers embrace after Dominion Voting Systems and Fox settled the defamation lawsuit over Fox's coverage of debunked election-rigging claims, in Wilmington, Delaware, U.S., April 18, 2023. At least 31 lawyers from nine different law firms worked on the case, court filings show. It was not immediately clear how large a share of the settlement the firm would receive in legal fees. The filings do not include recent costs associated with preparing for trial or the success fees lawyers could earn from the settlement. Fox News also hired Paul Clement and Erin Murphy, top appeals court lawyers who have advocated for conservative causes at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Just like Dominion, Smartmatic is accusing Fox’s news networks of airing defamatory comments about its products in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, including that the voting-machine company helped rig the outcome in favor of Joe Biden. The $2.7 billion lawsuit is pending in New York state court.
Now, major retailers are dusting off their playbook for a recession — or at least for a period of slower sales. Target shoppers can soon get a Starbucks coffee, make a return and retrieve an online purchases without leaving their cars. Some retailers are rethinking their approach to discounts while questioning other costs, such as giving away free shipping or deliveries without strings attached. Some retailers have also turned free shipping into a perk for only engaged or higher spending customers. Nike , for instance, offers free shipping for shoppers – if they share their personal data by joining its membership program.

Unlike much of last year, the rates market is now inclined to believe the central bank on the direction of travel. And implied year-end rates are as high as 5.12% - almost half a point higher than where the current rate sits. Two-year Treasury yields hit a three-month high at 4.72% on Friday, with 10-year yields at 3-month peaks too - homing in on 4% for the first time since November. So as impressive as this week's stock market resilience had been to the new inflation and rates environment, it appears to be buckling again already. Key developments that may provide direction to U.S. markets later on Friday:* U.S. Jan import and export prices, leading indicator.

At the time of his termination, Mr. Fairhurst had been the subject of multiple reports of sexual harassment during his tenure, according to the Delaware ruling. Emerging oversight liabilityThe legal doctrine driving the McDonald’s shareholder lawsuit extends back to a 1996 Delaware Court of Chancery decision. The ultimate impact of Judge Laster’s ruling vis-à-vis McDonald’s shareholders is as of yet unclear. If the judge approves the McDonald’s directors’ motion to dismiss, the claims against Mr. Fairhurst would be moot.
The morning search by FBI agents appeared to represent an expansion of the probe into Biden's handling of classified documents. The White House counsel's office did not have representatives present at the search, White House spokesperson Ian Sams told reporters. Classified documents have also been found in the home of Trump's former vice president, Mike Pence, giving some political cover to Biden. Trump resisted efforts to return materials in his possession, prompting a FBI search of his Florida home and resort last year. It is unlawful to knowingly or willfully remove or retain classified material, although no current or former president or vice president has been charged with wrongdoing.

Amazon Air will enable the company to offer faster deliveries to customers in India, said Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air, in a statement. Amazon has for years been working to grow its presence in India, which is poised to become one of the fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the world.
Cyberthieves stole more than $186,000 from Rep. Diana Harshbarger's campaign committee, federal records show. But others haven't been so lucky as a theft epidemic strikes political committees. The 2020 presidential campaign of now-President Joe Biden is among various political committees to experience theft during the past several years. More recently, the American Hospital Association's political action committee and Kanye West's 2020 presidential campaign committee have fallen victim to financial fraudsters. Requiring campaign vendors to "meet or exceed the same security standards" as the campaign committee itself.

WASHINGTON — At stake in this year’s key Senate races is not just the balance of power between the parties, but within them. Now this year's Senate races represent one of the toughest electoral challenges yet for the modern progressive movement. These groups will back progressives in open Senate races, but have yet to recruit someone to run against an incumbent Democrat. But both Fetterman and Barnes then went on to be elected lieutenant governor, statewide victories that helped them convince party insiders they could win U.S. Senate races. John Fetterman, the Democratic Senate nominee in Pennsylvania, greets supporters at Nether Providence Elementary School, in Wallingford on Oct. 15.
Local operators have installed prayer rooms and hung flags from workers' home countries in office bullpens to attract and retain staff. Warehouse work pays well — often double the local minimum wage — for people without college degrees or specialized trade skills. Organizing efforts have sprung up, as some unions see the pace and danger of warehouse work as a chance to mobilize. A leaked memo from 2021, first reported by Recode, showed Amazon warehouses had annual turnover of 159% in 2020. Amazon employs more warehouse workers than any other company, with a US warehouse workforce of roughly 700,000 people.
The widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election as alleged by Trump and his supporters was never proven. Election officials in three other states -- North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada -- reported similar incidents. In 16 North Carolina counties alone, officials noted unusually aggressive observers during May's primary elections, according to a state election board survey. When told to stop, they said they were following guidance from a Republican Party lawyer, said Henderson County Election Director Karen Hebb. As head of the Election Integrity Network, Mitchell is training election observers and is trying to build grassroots networks of conservatives ahead of the midterms.

With the term “personal taxes,” however, Mr. Garten appears to be conflating income taxes with other federal taxes Mr. Trump has paid — Social Security, Medicare and taxes for his household employees. Fragments of Mr. Trump’s tax returns have leaked out before. Mr. Agalarov’s father, Aras, a billionaire who boasts of close ties to Mr. Putin, was Mr. Trump’s partner in the event. Mr. Trump’s avoidance of income taxes is one of the most striking discoveries in his tax returns, especially given the vast wash of income itemized elsewhere in those filings. When they got to line 56, the one for income taxes due, the amount was the same each year: $750.
