If you’re in the majority, you don’t need judges and juries to hear you and protect your rights. Last month, Biden traveled to Texas, where he announced a set of proposed Supreme Court reforms that would impose mandatory ethics rules for the court and term limits on justices. The proposals aren’t likely to be implemented before Biden’s term ends, but they signal a policy goal for Democrats as several Supreme Court justices have come under increased scrutiny in the last few years. Last year, ProPublica reported on a series of expensive gifts and trips Justice Clarence Thomas took with billionaire Harlan Crow. Greg Abbott officially set the special election to replace the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, for Nov. 5, 2024, the same day as the general election. The special election will only determine who will serve out the rest of Jackson Lee’s term, through January. There will be no primary for the general election, since Jackson Lee won that in March. Edwards mounted a primary challenge against Jackson Lee earlier this year, which Jackson Lee won by over 20 percentage points in March. Any other candidates who wish to run in the special election must declare their candidacy by August 22, the governor's official proclamation said.

Former President Donald Trump on Friday said he would no longer participate in a September debate on ABC, opting instead to accept Fox News’ offer to debate Vice President Kamala Harris on Sept. 4. The network pitched two of its anchors, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, as moderators, which Trump agreed to in his Truth Social post. In a tweet posted Saturday, the vice president said, "It’s interesting how 'any time, any place' becomes 'one specific time, one specific safe space.' Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., who spoke at the Harris rally, said Trump was “too scared” to debate the vice president. He’s scared.

The Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina is out with a new TV ad where he and his wife reveal that she had an abortion 30 years ago. Mark Robinson and his wife talk directly to the camera, revealing few details about the procedure beyond his telling viewers, "Thirty years ago, my wife and I made a very difficult decision. Robinson’s promise in his TV ad to keep the state’s abortion ban at 12 weeks appears to mark a shift from his previous remarks. "As governor, Mark Robinson will work to make North Carolina a destination for life by building a culture that does more to support women and families, including bolstering adoption, as well as foster and childcare." On Sunday, officials attempted to block opposition volunteers from voting centers, and in some places, they succeeded. The QR code scans gave a team of campaign workers immediate access to voting results, which they tabulated Sunday night and Monday. The National Electoral Council has not yet shared the tallies on its website, which has been down since Monday. While it is not obligated to post images of the tally sheets, it has previously shared each sheet’s totals. The campaign needed to get them all fully scanned using equipment especially designed to copy the tally sheets.

Elon Musk, the owner of X, retweeted a parody Kamala Harris campaign ad Friday without labeling it as misleading, an apparent violation of his own platform's rules. Portions of video footage in the altered content — such as Harris speaking to crowds, and general videos of her supporters — were used in a recent Harris' campaign video on YouTube. In the original video, Harris narrates, telling viewers, "In this election, we each face a question: what kind of country do we want to live in?" Ismail Kadare, the Albanian novelist and poet who single-handedly wrote his isolated Balkan homeland onto the map of world literature, creating often dark, allegorical works that obliquely criticized the country’s totalitarian state, died in Tirana, Albania, on Monday. In a literary career that spanned half a century, Mr. Kadare (pronounced kah-dah-RAY) wrote scores of books, including novels and collections of poems, short stories and essays. He shot to international fame in 1970 when his first novel, “The General of the Dead Army,” was translated into French. Mr. Kadare’s name was floated several times for the Nobel Prize, but the honor eluded him. In 2005, he received the inaugural Man Booker International Prize (now the International Booker Prize), awarded to a living writer of any nationality for overall achievement in fiction.

Read previewAs fertility rates decline across much of the world, countries are exploring innovative strategies to encourage women to have more babies. Trent MacNamara, a Texas A&M professor whose work has focused on fertility rates, told BI that the impact of financial incentives on fertility rates was uncertain and might lead to only modest gains. Subsidized fertility treatments and vasectomy reversalsCohen said that other strategies to increase fertility rates included countries like Israel offering free or heavily subsidized in vitro fertilization. However, a 2020 essay by Tan said the Japanese example showed that reproductive technologies were not a panacea for low fertility rates. Japan has the world's highest percentage of babies born through IVF, yet it has one of the lowest fertility rates, she said.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani departs the U.S. District Courthouse after he was ordered to pay $148 million in his defamation case in Washington, U.S., December 15, 2023. The D.C. Bar's Board on Professional Responsibility on Friday recommended that Rudy Giuliani be barred from practicing law in the nation's capital. This report follows one from last year in which a disciplinary board for the D.C. Bar also recommended disbarment for Giuliani. Now, the case heads to the D.C. Court of Appeals, which will decide whether Giuliani, who formerly served as the mayor of New York City, will be disbarred. Giuliani has already had his law license suspended in New York, where a New York court ruled that he made "demonstrably false and misleading statements" following the 2020 presidential election.

Rep. Don Bacon on Sunday warned that "it's possible" that Speaker Mike Johnson could face a vote to oust him if he moves to pass Ukraine aid in the House. "I'm not going to deny it," Bacon, R-Neb., said when asked by NBC News' "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker whether it's possible Johnson could lose his speakership over Ukraine aid. Bacon favors some support for Ukraine and highlighted his partnership with Reps. Jared Golden, D-Maine, Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Ed Case, D-Hawaii, on a Ukraine aid bill. "We put a bill together that focuses on military aid — a $66 billion bill that provides military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan," Bacon told Welker, calling for a "bicameral, bipartisan solution." Before his death, García Márquez asked his sons, Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, to destroy the novel. The life of a work of art does not end when its creator dies. Artists too rarely leave clear instructions on what to do with their works, especially unfinished ones, which can lead to messy legal battles. The heirs inherit the responsibility to preserve and promote the artist’s legacy so that it can be appreciated for generations to come. The truth is that if García Márquez’s sons had done as their father asked, they would most likely have been met with criticism, too.

UNTIL AUGUST, by Gabriel García Márquez. Billed as a “rediscovered” novel, “Until August” is likely to be the last published book of fiction by the Colombian master and Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez. Reading it may provoke unhealthy levels of frustration in those familiar with García Márquez’s most indelible creations. Readers’ inevitable disappointment with “Until August” may be directed partly at García Márquez’s two sons and literary executors, who permitted its publication even though their father had made his wishes clear. And to his sons he said: “Memory is at once my source material and my tool.

CNN —Gabriel García Márquez’s last novel, “Memories of My Melancholy Whores,” was published 20 years ago, but the late Colombian author’s legacy did not end there. On Wednesday, the day García Márquez would have turned 97, the now-finished novel, “Until August,” was published by the author’s sons Rodrigo and Gonzalo García. But, as the pair acknowledge in the book’s preamble, García Márquez didn’t want the work to be released. The Colombian author’s memory loss undermined his confidence in his work, his sons said. García Márquez’s sons have confirmed that there are no other unfinished novels in storage.

Toward the end of his life, when his memory was in pieces, Gabriel García Márquez struggled to finish a novel about the secret sex life of a married middle-age woman. “He told me directly that the novel had to be destroyed,” said Gonzalo García Barcha, the author’s younger son. When García Márquez died in 2014, multiple drafts, notes and chapter fragments of the novel were stashed away in his archives at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. The story remained there, spread over 769 pages, largely unread and forgotten — until García Márquez’s sons decided to defy their father’s wishes. Now, a decade after his death, his last novel, titled “Until August,” will be published this month, with a global release in nearly 30 countries.
