As Tesla CEO Elon Musk continues to make lofty promises about his company's future in autonomous driving and robotics, investors keep watching profit margins deteriorate. It's the fourth straight quarter of shrinkage. The company reported just $1.48 billion in net income on revenue of $25.5 billion, which included $890 million in regulatory credits. "Affordability remains top of mind for customers," said Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla's chief accounting officer, on the company's earnings call. Tesla began offering a five-year, zero interest loan offer to spur sales of its EVs in China in April.

Elon Musk, chief executive officer of SpaceX and Tesla and owner of X, speaks at the Milken Conference 2024 in Beverly Hills, California, May 6, 2024. Elon Musk posted on X that he "fully" endorses Donald Trump moments after the former president and presumptive Republican nominee was rushed off stage by secret service members following gunshots at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. "I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery," Musk wrote on X, which he owns. Musk also compared Trump to Theodore Roosevelt, who survived an assassination attempt while campaigning for president in 1912. Musk also said at that event that Trump "does call me out of the blue for no reason."

Tesla shares fell about 6% on Thursday after Bloomberg reported that the electric vehicle maker is delaying the unveiling of its Robotaxi by two months. Tesla's stock slump on Thursday followed an 11-day rally that was sparked by a better-than-expected deliveries report for the second quarter. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised shareholders a robotaxi for years. In 2015, he said Tesla's cars would achieve "full autonomy" within three years. However, the company has yet to deliver a robotaxi, autonomous vehicle or technology that can turn its cars into "level 3" automated vehicles.

Elon Musk attends 'Exploring the New Frontiers of Innovation: Mark Read in Conversation with Elon Musk' session during the Cannes Lions International Festival Of Creativity 2024 - Day Three on June 19, 2024 in Cannes, France. Tesla's stock price rose enough on Friday to wipe out its loss for the year and bring its gain for the week to 27%. The latest rally was sparked by a better-than-expected deliveries report for the second quarter on Tuesday. In April, Tesla shares hit a 52-week low after a string of troubling developments. Since last year, Tesla has been offering extensive discounts and incentives to attract customers to its aging lineup of EVs, including its popular entry-level Model 3 sedans, Model Y crossover utility vehicles, and its more expensive, flagship Model S sedans and Model X SUVs.

With the shares rallying 17% in the two trading days since the second-quarter report, short sellers have lost an estimated $3.5 billion on a mark-to-market basis, according to data from S3 Partners. It's been a painful few months for short sellers, as Tesla shares have soared 73% since bottoming for the year in April. Short interest in Tesla currently stands at 3.5% of float, or 97 million shares shorted, with a $22.4 billion notional value. While the deliveries report suggested demand for Tesla vehicles remains stronger than feared, it offered a limited view into company performance. In the U.S., Tesla offered a three-year, 2% APR financing deal for buyers of its rear-wheel drive Model 3.

Tightness in labor markets is boosting the use case of robotics, Morgan Stanley says, predicting a boom in humanoids — or robots in human form. "Advancements in AI are transforming the robotics industry," Morgan Stanley analysts said in a June 26 report called: "Humanoids: Investment Implications of Embodied AI." The bank forecasts a humanoid population of 40,000 by 2030, 8 million by 2040 and 63 million by 2050. Morgan Stanley is not alone in its bullish stance on humanoids. Still, Morgan Stanley outlined a number of sectors set to potentially benefit from humanoids, with social care likely to be the largest total addressable market.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk sent an email to "everybody" that day. He told employees, "Over the next few weeks, Tesla will be doing a comprehensive review to provide stock options grants for exceptional performance." In a filing for the fourth quarter, Tesla said its employee head count worldwide at the end of December was 140,473, a number that represents salaried and hourly staffers. At around 121,000, that suggests Tesla has reduced overall headcount by at least 14% since the end of 2023. For the first quarter, Tesla reported a 9% drop in annual revenue, the biggest decline since 2012.

By providing diagnostics and recalibration of the high-tech systems in modern vehicles, the company hopes to decrease costs associated with EV ownership and repairs. The existing collision repair industry is well-equipped to handle most physical fixes like replacing a bumper, a busted windshield, brakes and paint or adjusting alignment. But for many collision repair centers and auto dealerships, ensuring all sensors, software and computers are working properly can prove time-consuming and expensive. Kinetic puts its robotic systems and technicians to work helping these shops and dealerships fix the finicky, "digital" aspects of customers' cars. Then Kinetic's software, which is connected to the vehicle's systems, will initiate and track the completion of those fixes.

The TikTok logo is displayed at TikTok offices on March 12, 2024 in Culver City, California. The Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that it's referred its complaint against TikTok and Chinese parent ByteDance to the U.S. Department of Justice. The FTC began its investigation following a 2019 settlement with Musical.ly, the predecessor to TikTok, that was related to violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The FTC was probing to see if TikTok violated a federal law that prohibits "unfair and deceptive" business practices. TikTok didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed on Thursday that his company's Optimus humanoid robots could eventually make the automaker worth more than half of that. As for shareholder value, Musk said Optimus could be the catalyst for lifting Tesla's market cap to $25 trillion someday. The company, he predicted, will have "over 1,000, or a few thousand, Optimus robots working at Tesla" in 2025. Getting to a $25 trillion market cap would mean that Tesla would be worth about eight times Apple's value today. He did say that autonomous vehicles could get the company to a market cap of $5 trillion to $7 trillion.

Elon Musk on Tuesday withdrew his lawsuit against OpenAI and two of the company's co-founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, in California state court. Musk's decision to file to dismiss the suit came just one day after he publicly criticized OpenAI and its new partnership with Apple. In February, Musk had filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman and Brockman — the current CEO and president of OpenAI, respectively — for breach of contract and fiduciary duty. Last year, Musk debuted his own AI startup and OpenAI competitor, xAI, which last month announced a $6 billion Series B funding round.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies on Monday after the iPhone maker announced a partnership with OpenAI. In a series of posts on his social media platform X, Musk shared concerns about whether Apple and OpenAI will protect users' information. He specifically said that Apple devices would be banned if the company "integrates OpenAI at the OS level," referring to Apple's operating system. Musk replied directly to a post from Apple CEO Tim Cook and claimed he will ban Apple devices from his companies' premises unless Cook decides to "stop this creepy spyware." He added that his companies' visitors will be asked to check their Apple devices at the door.

Day passes at hotels and resorts offer guests access to amenities without the cost of reserving a room. Hotels and third-party partners are making day passes more readily available to help bridge the gap between travel-minded consumers and luxury prices. Luxury hotel room rates in July are expected to be 85% higher than the same month in 2019, before the Covid pandemic, according to the luxury travel company Virtuoso. Berg said day passes "give people exactly what they want" and provide a separate source of revenue for hotels. Customers who buy day passes through ResortPass often splurge on poolside or other hotel amenities more than overnight guests do, Wolf said.

Tesla is being sued by the nonprofit Environmental Democracy Project, which alleges "ongoing failure to comply with the Clean Air Act" at the electric vehicle company's assembly plant in Fremont, California. The latest lawsuit in California described Tesla's environmental violations as "ongoing" and said that residents and employees in the surrounding area have been exposed to "excess amounts of air pollution, including nitrogen oxides, arsenic, cadmium, and other harmful chemicals." The Bay Area Air Quality Management District, an environmental regulator, recently accused Tesla of allowing "unabated emissions" in Fremont that should have been prevented. Air pollution from the assembly plant is the result of equipment that frequently breaks down, allowing emissions to vent directly into the air without proper filtration, regulators have said. Additionally, Tesla employees or contractors have allegedly shut off air pollution controls in the factory, particularly when the company was having trouble with other paint shop equipment.

The future of Tesla Supercharging is uncertain following CEO Elon Musk's disbanding of the Supercharging team as part of a broader restructuring. The roughly 500 layoffs included senior director of EV charging Rebecca Tinucci and Daniel Ho, director of vehicle programs. "I would describe the Supercharger network as one of the crown jewels of Tesla," said Andres Pinter, co-CEO of Bullet EV Charging Solutions. "Instead of doing victory laps and building the Supercharger network and reaping the benefits of this asset, suddenly there's this pause." Musk said in a post that Tesla still plans to grow the Supercharger network, just at a slower pace.
